I don't think people understand just how powerful Aerys the 2nd regime was up to the tournament at Harrenhall. Tywin was hand. The kings guard consisted of Arthur Dayne, Barristan the bold, Gerold Hightower. 3 of the greatest knights. With Dorne, the Reach, the Crownlands, and the Westerlands as great allies. And it was Rhaegar who fucked it up for a piece of wolf ass... Damn that doggystyle 🤣🤣🤣

Rhaegar believed in The Prince that was promised, that's partly why he did all this, even sacrificing himself on the trident whereas he could have taken the kingsguard to fight alongside him but he didn't and wanted to make sure Lyanna had her baby.

I'm not sure how true Arthur dayne stuck to his vows. At first glance of the text it seems he was among the most noble knights the westeros had seen and died doing his duty protecting the rightful heir at the tower of joy, but if you look at the events leading up to his death it tells a slightly different story. the tourney at harrenhall was a ploy by rheagar to address as many of the lords of the kingdom as possible to gather support and organise a plan to dethrone his father the mad king and claim his right as heir to the throne. The tourney was held by house whent who didn't have the wealth to offer such lavish prizes used for the tourney, that would be used to draw as many numbers to the tournement as possible. So the it was most likely funded by rheagar. The tourney was announced a couple of days after oswell whent a member of the kingsguard that is also at the tower of joy had traveled to harrenhal. So we can presume oswell went to harenhall on rheagars orders to deliver the message that house whent was to hold the tourney. The whents are obviously backing rheagar since they are holding the tourney and the fact the rheagar chose oswell a fellow whent and kingsguard to deliver the message is the first implication that a member of the kingsguard is conspiring against the king. It is mentioned by Jamie, barristan and john connington that sir Arthur dayne was rheagars closest friend. It's is also stated by Jamie that rheagar kept secrets from him that he did not keep from dayne. So there is a very high likelihood that Arthur dayne new about rheagars plan to dethrone his father and the prophecy that he was obsessed with, and he would have also known lyanna stark was needed to fulfill the prophecy. We find out that the 3 kingsguard of the tower of joy weren't at rheagars side at the trident, nor were they at kingslanding protecting the king or rheagars wife and children, instead they stayed at the tower of joy on rheagars orders during the whole war. The mad king ordered that the knight of the laughing tree to be captured at harrenhall and If you believe that lyanna was in fact the mystery knight then it is likely rheagar unmasked her and this is how they met and why she was given the crown of winter roses and you could speculate that rheagar was hiding lyanna at the tower from not only Robert and the north but his father as well. So not only are the kingsguard at the tower not protecting the king or the heir or the next rightful heir to the throne. They are there protecting the person their king ordered to be captured and integrated and being as paranoid as the mad king had become killed.
