To be honest HOMM VII is actually fairly decent. I prefer it to 5 and definitely to 6. 6 was always the worst in the series by a long way. Obviously nothing will ever trump HOMM 3, but HOMM 7 is a fairly decent game

I find H7 OST to be right behind H4 OST but both of those games have entirely different way of portraying in-game ambient through music. H4 OST is more melancholic, easier. Makes listeners to go into that "awww" phase, if you catch my meaning. H7 sometimes feels like they were trying a little bit too hard to create a musical masterpiece and failed but I still tend to idle on my turns just so I can hear the music going :)

@@joshuasanders4302 Okay, I gotta give it! HOMM III battle pieces were superior, as they were far more chaotic and battle-like. Nonetheless, what in HOMM III the issue was that everything was some similar. Sure, there were some changes here and there, but it was still the same atmosphere. In the meantime, when you enter a town in HOMM VII, you can feel vastly different from another town/just journeying. And that's what does it for me. It's just so impressively diverse.

@@joshuasanders4302 I think you may have a point there again: there's probably a lot of nostalgia (in my case too ofc), and the amount of times we might have heard the themes very much changes the attitudes (since I've played VII way, way more than III). Maybe you are right that I just haven't played enough of HOMM III to discern the towns, as I have exactly the same problem you mention with VII - I really do like Necropolis in III, but for example Stronghold is just too similar to even battle theme imo. But then again, I grew up playing Heroes V, not III :P And I think the "ball room dance" is fair, but I again I like that, since they're more still than in HOMM III. There isn't so much happening, and towns do sound to me like a place that would be more peaceful than the rest of the world.

Я играю(не играл, а играю, в настоящем времени) во все части франшизы героев, и в целом помню музыку, но чтобы освежить в памяти, решил прослушать музыку всех частей подряд. И раз уж в интернете люди могут высказывать свое мнение, то и я напишу свое имхо. В общем то, музыка хороша во всех частях героев, бывает различается стиль, но в целом она не слишком отличается, благо композитор то, основной, один и тот же. Но так как почти все любят какие то градации, то я бы поставил так. Лучшая музыка - Герои 4, минус, почти все композиции оттуда выполнены в одной стилистике, кому то и не зайдет. Хорошая музыка - Герои 2, 5, 7(да,да) и 3. Из особенностей, могу сказать что пятерка выделяется тем, что там написали музыку, в стилистике каждой расы, для города, битвы, осады, что многим понравится(хотя кому то и нет, ведь если не зашла тема города, то слушать ее вариации и вне города может быть неприятно). А тройка выделяется силой ностальгии:) и отсутствием оперности(для меня минус, для очень многих плюс). Про двойку и семерку не скажу ничего особого, только не согласен с тем что музыка из семерки дженерик музыка, хватает хороших, цепляющих ухо треков, а музыка городов более менее отражает лор или стилистику(это тем расистам, кому внезапно не понравилась музыка эльфов(силван), потому что восточная, кек, она всегда была довольно восточной или хотя бы просто экзотической(Ирландские мотивы), даже мои знакомые называли тему rampart из тройки чем то китайским)) И увы, последняя категория, Обычная музыка - Герои 1 и 6. Особенности, в героях два, музыка часто похожая, и лучше и доработанней, чем в первой части, что логично из хода развития серии. Ну и, она немного подустарела, в двойке звучала получше, и там были новые треки. А шестерка, при всем моем уважении, и том что мне нравятся многие треки оттуда, имела слишком мало новинок, а те что были, почему то не так цепляли, эпичностью ли, или лиричностью. Слишком много треков взяли из предыдущих частей, ностальгия это конечно приятно, но в плане оценки музыки, это скорее в минус. PS: возможно я бы хотел засунуть в лучшую музыку и других номинантов тоже, но насколько я помню правила подобных "соревнований", победитель должен быть только один)

Interesting. This is very different from Romero's previous HOMM soundtracks. Much less of an instrumental-fantasy roller coaster. Much darker. It's unfortunate that the series has become a soundtrack with a game attached EDIT: Upon reflection, I like it a lot. Though it's not as good as 3 and 4, I think it's better than 6, and on par with 5. Either way, it's excellent.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think HOMM 7 is tied for second place of the series. But for a series known to have a history of awesome music, this is kinda a let down. For me, it is similar to that feeling I got when I played Dragon Age II. Still a great game, but lacked the scale of the original.

James Tarr but thats my point though. i judge music by setting the mood right not by how epic it was. that makes good music good to me. thats why i think homm 7 soundtrack is good. im currently playing homm 3 and it honestely has it flaws aswell if youre putting the nostalgia away. a lot of OLD soundtracks are mostely aiming to hit the atmosphere right but not really trying to be music at the same time. i think thats different in homm 7. it kinda gets both right. nekropolis soundtrack and sylvan for example are matching their races perfectly. i think its worth to think about it for a while :p.

Is Sylvan supposed to be Indian/Arabic? Not really sure. Haven could use something more militaristic (instead of elvish), but H4 featured a really melancholic theme so whatever. Necropolis theme would be great for Wizards tbh. It's energetic and memorable, but doesn't make any feel of evil, menace, darkness or sadness like Heroes 2-5 themes. While Romero copy pasted some of Heroes 3 theme "Dies Irae" part from Necropolis theme into H7 Academy. It's a total mess. Dungeon boring as usual. Inferno had a promising beginning and then it meanders on to the ending, wasting the gathered energy - for the supposed "true evil" race it didn't really do much. Heroes 7 got this Diablo 3 syndrome, when music turned generic. I guess it suits quality of Ubisoft games, who stuff their Ashan world with whatever is going on in popculture - H5 WoW and Warhammer, H6-7 kind of Game of Thrones with all these shades of grey thrown around.

Its not bad with expansion and with the new Heroes 7.5 mod its really complex way more complex in units skills, hero skill wheels than H3 or may be H5 12 towns are in H7.5

The problem with post HoMM4 entries, is that all dev teams lacked any kind of coherent vision what their game should look and feel like. I guess it's the publisher interfering into the production process forcing "safe" solutions (that will cater towards the biggest potentional consumer base). Hence the awful total direction of HoMM5 that stinks with World of Warcraft (2006, it was too obvious), M&M: Heroes 6 was bland with its overstyled graphics and the soundtrack was driven solely on nostalgia blackmailing (a lot of songs were just repacked themes from the 2nd and 3rd one - they even put the Rampart theme from the 3rd into the 6th). Don't forget the awful dungeon faction, oh Christ. With M&M: Heroes 7 (a decent game overall) the dev had some kind of artistic vision of H7's distinct feel (a stained glass was supposed to be main theme, but it's so scattered without any consequence), but again, I guess the publisher's directions stood against any kind of the dev's initiative. And its soundtrack shows that. What happened, Romero? It's just so bland and generic. After dozens of hours played in Heroes 7 I can't tell myself this music is "Heroes". You could put any kind of generic high fantasy placeholder in the background and nobody's eye would even flick for a second with a doubt it's out of place. The music score is not "bad". It's awfully mediocre and at the end of the day doesn't even provokes any reactions at all other than "meh", you can't even hate it. In comparision, the HoMM2's soundtrack is so powerful and distinct, nobody would think "generic" of it, even if the one has never played HoMM2. On the side note, I hope that with the next installment/reboot of the series, the next developer will finally ditch the awful HoMM5's UI layout. How did it last through three games is beyond me.

I dunno', I feel like lots of people were just triggered by Heroes 6 changes and didn't gave a game a try. Yes, Uplay is bad. Ubisoft has worst business model for expansions (dont buy them) and there are still bugs... but I still enjoyed it. I do agree however on some note, even if I do think you are just biased because of the nostalgia. Btw you do realize some of these songs were composed in Heroes 2 era and they were just now remade right?

Elven (Sylvan) theme is a mishit. 1. Music with a shout-like singing is just so much incompatible with a high exquisite of elven culture. 2. Why, please tell me why they choose a pipes instead of flutes? It's just so obvious that it's not an elven instument. I don't remember such a fail of soundtrack in Heroes earlier.

Agreed, the theme felt very tribal warrior-ish, doesn't really fit with their lore. To compare, necro's music might be different from the death theme of h3 and h4 but at least it fits the lore that they've done
