I replied "What? Most my last team were Asian?" and they replied "Yeah!? ... WHITE." Why japanese studios even allow these VA to do their job baffles me when there are so many people on the internet that could replace them easily
@SpiceCh5 күн бұрын
From what I gather, Japanese studios just license the anime to an international distributor. The distributor then does the work of translating and dubbing it for local languages. The Japanese studio doesn't have a say in how the studio subsequently molests their IP, and most won't care as long as they get paid, even if it's offensive as hell.

@@SpiceCh pretty much. The Japanese studios pretty much just give permission to the English studio / distributor and have trust that the studio will do their due diligence and have an understanding of the western market. The shade used for her skin looks like it could've been used as a highlight colour on her original model. I don't know... There's nothing wrong with seeing yourself in different fictional characters and identifying with them, but it rubs me the wrong way when someone goes, "There, I fixed them :)" and changes nothing but their appearance. With these "fixes" too, they tend to look almost... stereotypical of the group they're trying to represent. There's also the fact that people sometimes get that while yes, many anime characters are drawn pale, some of them are given darker skin tones because... not all Japanese people are milky white. The character might also get a lot of sun exposure. They see these non-pale characters and go, "Well, obviously, they must be a whole other race then." when that's not the case. I don't know, man... There's a weird thing online nowadays. The "underdogs" are so used to being victimized, they go out of their way to attack anyone who isn't a part of their group. It's become acceptable to casually say you hate men, white people, and heterosexuals because it's supposedly empowerment. Instead of wanting equality, it's become a case of "No, we're actually superior, and everyone who has the traits of our oppressors should die." making more people outside of their circle dislike them. It's just... a tiring cycle of both sides hating each other more and more for their intolerance of each other.

It wasn't treated as a race change, but more of a "Alternate model" In this scenario, there was no justification to changing the race of the characters in the first place. The characters don't have any "cannon reason" to change races, other than the artist's ego. I'm sure these people wouldn't have a problem if it was Kirby who was colored black.

@ Where did you learn that Miki was Japanese? I was always under the impression that Miki was a "digital entity" with no real idea of race. Sure, most works are in a Japanese setting so they were technically considered Japanese, but it wasn't limited to that. For the point of the gender edit, that's actually a good point that I haven't condidered! I know you didn't ask, but I thought about it for a bit, and since you gave me an idea, I would like to share it. Ignore the following rant if not interested. I also probably wouldn't respond the same if they were tanned edits, and a possible reason race edits make me feel unconfortable is because I personally think race is more than just the looks. "I changed xxx to this skintone" feels fine. The skin looms different and you like it. cool. "I changed xxx to this race" this one to me feels like they are covering over the entirety of the original character. When race changes, experiences, values, and perspective changes. The same goes for gender, but I beleive that racial background has a stronger influence on these aspects. Putting that on a character that doesn't have a blank slate like Miku gives me the impression that they are disregarding the experience, values, and perspectives of those original characters.

I really loved the dub for DanDaDan, and I think A.J. Beckles does Okarun justice, so I wanna give him the benefit of the doubt that he saw the art and never knew of the controversy of Japan finding raceswapping art, because he did end up changing his profile. Which is a good way of handling the controversy, some people would have doubled down...

I know I've said it 100 times, but I really hate it when all English VAs are lumped in the same box as people as this, despite many actively speaking out against this kind of thing. Once again, they get bad press because some other obnoxious VA decides to get involved in discrimination (which is apparently okay as long as they do it).

Reminds me of the time when the BBC cast a black actress as Anne Boleyn, a historical figure who had Scottish ancestry. Also reminds me of how every redhead character in western entertainment seems to get replaced. It's so frustrating. The behavior is downright spiteful and that's an understatement.

As a member of the dubbed anime group, the fact that voice actors are basically siding against their employers isn't a good sign. I'm just hoping Ian Sinclair doesn't stick his foot in his mouth.

@expertarcher8542 Aleks doesn't come across someone who would do or say something stupid to jeopardize his career. Especially after he worked so hard to master the English language and his American accent. I was mind-blown when I learned he voiced Zenitzu and Thorfinn. Talk about versatility.

If you can't put yourself into the shoes of a character because of its location and skin, i think you have a problem with your own ego. The story isn't about you, it's about the character's story. Almost like some people never grew out of the primary narcissism stage in infancy.
@Robin5034 күн бұрын
This. Couldn't have said it better, this is what irritates me with this situation.. As a voice actor, you need to put yourself in the shoes of your character that you play while respecting the work of it's creator. I would be honored to play any anime character no matter the screen time or color but clearly this guy is putting his whole identity into Okarun which isn't what a voice actor is suppose to do..
@faa14124 сағат бұрын
Yeah it's weird as if they're making the character an extension of themselves, not realizing they could get replaced next season. So using a raceswapped character as your pfp makes you look goofy and unprofessional. You agreed to take on a light skin/fair skin character; act accordingly and professionally. You shouldn't even be reposting fan art, especially art that could be considered controversial.
