Great analysis! I learnt a lot from it! I also watched the video you did three years ago of "Consign to Oblivion" by Epica. I have no idea how I haven't happened upon your channel before! I would really recommend doing loads more Epica analyses. If not all, then certainly most of their songs have this level of complexity. I have heard that of the six current members, five have some sort of serious education in classical music, in differing ways, from the singer who has taken years and years of private lessons to the keyboardist who apparently holds a degree in classical composition. I saw in the comments on your video three years ago that many people requested "Kingdom of Heaven, part 3". I second that, but also "Kingdom of Heaven, part 1". They are both 13-minute songs, created around 12 years apart, and they were both performed live at Epica's "Omega Alive" show, which was their pandemic project, a concert without an audience. Note: Videos from "Omega Alive" might look like music videos, but they are true live performances to the same extent that a normal Epica shows are (i.e. there are some parts from backing tracks). However, I know some particular shots were spliced in for dramatic effect (something about an upright piano, you'll know when you see it). I also would like to recommend some particular songs from this same "Retrospect 2013" concert whence you just watched "Unleashed": * Monopoly On Truth -- this was the show opener at "Retrospect 2013", and I particularly like the almost call-and-reply between the singer and the choir towards the end, just before the guitar solo. * Serenade of Self-Destruction -- another heavy, slightly proggy one * The obsessive devotion -- maybe Epica's heaviest song, and actually they also performed this at the aforementioned "Omega Alive", and since you're not averse to making _long_ analysis videos, maybe you could do both versions in one go, to compare and contrast? Especially the female vocals are quite different in the newer performance. These three are not often requested to people in the "reaction scene", but I really think they should be.

As usual, great analysis. Fun fact; lead singer Simone Simons was three months pregnant at this concert. I also liked the big grin the 2nd(?) violinist showed when the audience started clapping along during the introduction. [edit] Thank you for referring to the writer as a composer; I think that accolade is deserved.

Nice to see Epica again. From memory I put you onto Consign to Oblivion all that time ago. First found your channel because of your Opeth t-shirt. In a video you once mentioned Igorrr. Looked them up and a big fan now. Saw Opeth live years ago, Igorrr last year, and Epica earlier this year. All these bands were incredible live. Oh your summary of favourite reactions ages ago also put me into Clowncore, and now I am a Louis Cole fan also. I do like reactions where the host adds value to the videos.

Best analysis of this song on KZbin. Would you even believe this is what Epica considers a radio single? Because it is! Their albums have far more complex offerings then this song, musically. My favourite band, and my favourite vocalist by miles. Next paycheck I will send you a tip as thanks! I'll tip for every Epica song you do in fact!

Simone is a vocal goddess. One reviewer described her as Disney princess, opera queen and rock goddess in one delightful package… hard to argue with that. There are plenty of strong female vocalists out there but few, if any, that have the delicate side as well.

I've been to many concerts from this band and they always deliver. They are really really good. This year they did a concert with live Orchestra again and it was amazing! ❤ Simone is an angel and her voice got only better and better when she got older imo. If you ever have the chance to go to a concert of theirs I would certainly go. 🔥

Love this song, specially this version because it contains that orchestral intro which is not in the original studio version or in other live ones Great analysis as always

About the chords @37:05 where you say there is something very sci-fi about it -- it really sounds very James Horner-esque. The closest I can place it is a little motif in the score to Star Trek II. Nice analysis!

Hello again! As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the best live performances I've ever seen, both in terms of quality (audio+video) and content (substantive speaking). I recommend checking out the other songs, I recommend "Sancta Terra" and "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" You won't be disappointed, believe me 😍😍😍 btw. Epica are really great when it comes to combining metal and classical music. In this particular piece, the intro - (apart from Queen) it's Mozart, and in other works we have Bach, Beethoven, Pergolesi (Stabat MD), Moniuszko, oriental influences. So something that you have to watch, listen to and best of all - evaluate 👍👍👍
@nikosv95
@nikosv95 10 күн бұрын
There is nothing even close to Mozart in the intro. the fact that the violins play a harmonic minor scale at one point doesn't make it mozart. And the other composers you mention? Are you 𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘴 ? Epica never had influences from classical music , not even close (and no, the fact that simone sang Stabat Matter doesn't mean Epica has Pergolosi influences). Epica's symphonic parts at best sound like generic New Age symphonic music ala Yannis. Nothing even remotely close to the superior compositions of the classical composers.
