Your videos taught me how to save a 50-yr-old dwarf pear field-tree (of sentimental value) -- though my job was to kill it, because it looked hideous. But I saw potential! Instead, I worked hard to uproot and re-pot it. I reoriented the trunk, found the front, and pruned a bit (all learned from you). Now I get nothing but praise, "It looks like a totally different tree!". Thank you, Peter!

Yeah, they are fun to watch grow for a bit. However, I have seen what can happen when two crossing roots try fusing passed eachother. Eventually, those roots die. If that is ok for the composition, go for it. Otherwise it's a good idea to clip them before they get big enough to begin girdling.

You often mention wire in your videos used for various purposes and at various gauges, but I can't recall if you mentioned what kind of wire and I'd love to know. I assume it's a kind of wire which is corrosion resistant but also something that's not too hard to bend or too brittle. Once again fantastic video! Was it possible/advisable to save the surface grass the tree had before being repotted? I have one that has a beautiful moss I wouldn't want to lose when I have to repot it.
@ethanpayne41163 жыл бұрын
If I'm not wrong you should be able to just remove the moss and place it back on the top of the soil when the tree is repotted, but as for the fine grass I'm not sure, though I think it would likely regrow anyway even with nothing done to it. I wonder what insight Mr. Chan has regarding this or if he's done a video about soil surface detailing. Maybe it's in one of his videos about bonsai landscapes but I haven't gotten to those yet so I can't say.

Hello Mr Chan! I am from austria, so sorry about my english. You told in your videos that we should use for the new pot a little larger size than the old pot is. What happens if I use a larger pot? Is it not better for the roots if they have more space? Then the trunk would get more thickness, or isn‘t it so? Regards Jürgen
@Stettafire2 жыл бұрын
If you use a larger pot the tree is grow taller faster. That's because it can build more of a root network. A larger tree needs a larger root network, smaller trees need less space. You can use the pot size to control the growth. Although when it gets pot bound you need to decide if you want to tease and cut the roots or to go for a larger pot. It depends on what you're trying to do and the health of the tree. If the tree is struggling you may decide not to cut the roots and repot larger instead, just doing light teasing

@Robert_McGarry_Poems3 жыл бұрын
They will fuse and can girdle eachother. Just like leaving wire on too long. Why this ultimately is a problem is, that after spending a very long time creating an old nebari, crossing roots can cause die back. It is not a detrimental problem on all species, but it is for a good deal.
