Can you do the leaf pruning with sycamore as well? Mine is 25 years old ive found its growing better if i leave pruning til the stem hardens a bit. But the leaves are about half the size of a natural grown tree

@@suer666 I pluck the leaves before summer, they grow back a little smaller. I plucked too many last year so I’m not doing it this year to let it recover. How tall is your 25 year tree? Mine is 6y and about 60cm. Next year I might cut it back hard and start a new leader.

Peter I have been watching you for years now, lived in the Far East when I was young and love all what it had to offer. Loved watching you do all the different Bonsai styles is so relaxing for me. I have now bitten the bullet and ordered two starter trees from you and a few bits to go with them, just finished making them in my version of a Bonsai, I think they look fab. Just bought one of your books also, just to have some references at hand when needed. Thank you for giving me so much joy over the years and now years to come. Alway love your shirts ha the best of health to you Gwendoline

If not for Mr Peter Chan I would not be doing bonsai. I've been doing it for years now and I still love it. Thank you so much. I wish I lived across the pond or could afford to visit. I'm in America but I'm a huge fan. I would love to be able to visit Herons Bonsai.

I was trimming a little Japanese Maple the other day, trying to decide on cutting a long branch, and I heard Peter's voice in my head: "Go ahead and bite the bullet." It was quite amusing...

I enjoy watching the trees go from bush to bonsai. I've started to turn a few small pines on my foresty property to nawaki last year so i am looking forward to this years pine episode. I live at 62.5°N in Sweden so it is perfect to follow Heron so I know it is time to prune

I have a 6 year old sycamore that I cut the leaves off once they get big. I haven’t this year though because as Peter says I want them to feed the tree and make it stronger. I might soon though

That big chestnut is very nice! I have some growing in a group, 3 year seedlings perhaps 4 years. Last year I cut the top off and now they only have 4 big leaves each. Is it safe to cut the leaves off now or shall I just let them grow to thicken the trunks

Is there any harm in leaving the growth unclipped for the whole growing season then clipping back to shape in the Autumn or winter once it goes back into dormancy ?
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 7 ай бұрын
You can but yes could lose control of the shape. We prefer not to prune in Winter as you could get lots of die back. Spring and summer cuts heal quickly.

Question, beginner, if you prune back to 2 or 3 leaves of new growth every time the tree will always be getting bigger? Do you then "chop" further back and start over? Thanks
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 7 ай бұрын
Yes - from time to time - say once every third or fourth year - we have to cut hard back, unless of course we want to make the bonsai bigger.

Please convince Mr. Chan to let you buy an entry level DSLR and lavalier microphone to improve both the picture and the sound. It's so awkward to hear him sometimes, and then you'll move the phone camera closer to his hands and suddenly he's too loud. The techniques he's trying to show us look fuzzy with bad color and a low-res image that it's close to impossible to fully grasp what he's trying to show us. You guys have nearly half a million subscribers, the Google AdSense money must be pretty robust at this point, make it an investment in the channel and upgrade the equipment to take this channel to a whole new level. Everyone will benefit from this upgrade. I've been watching for years and I can't believe it's still shot and edited in the same way all these years later. I love the channel and want to see it improve as it progresses through the years.

Well, these trimming advices apply also to humans. And, when it is damaging, destructive and when educating and leading? This keeps me worrying in my philosophical thoughts. I left Bonsai, for ethical reasons.
