Thanks very much for so much inspiration. I am tentative about cutting off too much... A common ailment, I think.

Common among people new to bonsai. As you work on more trees and gain mode knowledge you will be more confident in your process of making bonsai

Thanks once again Peter for the work you do for the teaching of growing and refining trees to become bonsai one day. I assume you have not got the stolen trees returned, I suspect they were stolen to order, and the thieves decided to take some more Chinese elms. Sad world we live in these days.

Nice video. In my opinion all the best bonsais have a good taper (thick trunk base gradually becoming thinner up to the leader tip). I'm surprised that at the time of removing a second leader ''3 years ago'', Peter didn't cut back the thick stump completely, so that it could heal and blend earlier. Or at least sooner. See 14:43 to 15,15 and 16:35 to 17,00. The main trunk below the stump base is very thick, so letting the shoots from the unwanted 2nd leader stump continue to thicken the already disproportionately thick trunk below the stump looks like the opposite of a taper. If the stump had been removed completely 2 years ago (1 year after it was cut 3 years ago), then more growth and thickening would have happened (been diverted into it) since then in the thin stem of the chosen, leader that is being kept. Surely that would produce more, not less of a taper.

Yes that's correct - Inverse taper problem,

The chainsaw used on the bonsai tree seems very brutal, but it looks like, as far i can see, the cut is very clean.

You could work with those high roots by putting keto under it and decorate the keto with moss. This will give the tree a forest look.
