Wow, another great video, reminds me of the olive trees growing up in Southern California, now if I can just find a eucalyptus, oak and Joshua tree bonsai I could imagine I am back in LA. You are a natural teacher, very gifted and thank you.

This video just goes to show that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have some great bonsai. My friend and I just started getting into the hobby & he spent $225 on just one small Chinese elm. He was very surprised when I was able to produce 5 different small to medium bonsai on my own, made from trees and bushes that I picked up from a local nursery for $10-$15 each. The $150 included bonsai soil, pots & wire. I also got the satisfaction of creating them myself instead of getting something already done.

wow I have had a Buxus harlandii commercial bonsai just like you showed here for almost two years now and I haven't been very lucky with it. it is surviving but I decided to start giving it more care and I pruned all the dead growth and excessive branches. but I am amazed to see the extent to which you prune both the foliage and the roots! I am a total amateur in regards to bonsai trees (although I really like the art and philosophy behind it) and from what I read elsewhere I thought that one has to be careful with pruning, especially the roots. But I am happy to see that particularly this species seems to be very hardy. I am looking forward to watching my little tree progress and hopefully during this year, I can fulfill my dream - growing a bonsai giant redwood tree from seed. Thank you and I'm definitely following more of your work!

I think I got to my Buxus just in time. The branches are just thick enough that I bent them gently. Cleaned out some branches inside and its looking good as is. But if I didn't clean out some branches there would have been dieback. Plus it had a bug with eggs that I got rid of. I'll be trying to root the cuttings.

I absolutely loved watching this video. A friend introduced me to training bonsai and I took a class and learned the basics of wiring and shaping. I had an S shaped and a cascade Juniper. My friend also gave me one of his Japanese Maples. Sadly my ex-wife didn't water them during my move and they all died. My friend that got me interested, passed away a few years ago. He taught me two of my most favorite hobbies and those are disc golf and bonsai. I got out of both for a very long time. I started playing disc golf again about 2 years ago and now I'm wanting to get back into training bonsai. Thank you for creating these videos. It lets me know, I can do this with commercial bonsai. Is there a good, affordable set of tools, that you recommend? I paid a lot for the ones I had and lost. I want to know I'm going to stick with it before I start to invest a lot into it. Thank you again.

Hello Mr Chan, I have recently come across your videos as I want to try to make Bonsai trees after visiting the botanical gardens in Montreal, QC Canada. I thoroughly enjoy watching you and listening to you. I went to the garden centre in my hometown and bought a Buxus bush. We are at the beginning of November and it is quiet cold here and will get colder. The garden people there told me that I must put it outside for its dormant period and not do anything with it. I am disappointed that I cannot start immediately to make Bonsai. Can you please advise me if this is so? I would be greatly appreciative. Patricia Breault

This is in continuation of my previous chat. As you have always suggested to use mica pots for the bonsai plants , because of its light weight and comparatively cheaper and easy to carry, I' am in India's capital Delhi. I wish to purchase mica pots. Do you know some body who is dealing with these pots? Please let me know. My requirement is square pot with 20" side and depth 6"or may be a round with 20" diameter. It is my hobby and keen interest in bonsai. I am regularly watching your videos. Regards - Onkar Seth.

As far as I learned if they get pot bound. If you see the roots grow too much have no room left, try and cut the roots about 1-2 inches and repot it.
