Commando’s were akin to special forces in the clone army. The arc troopers were more akin to rangers. Both trained and equipped for different types of missions. In the beginning of the clone wars, no general knew how to utilize the commandos. Making them do missions more meant for regular clone troopers and Arc troopers. Hence why they had high causalities initially.

I love the EU for that, you see how incompetent the Jedi was, and it made you realize that if you was a Clone and had a chance to kill the guy who keeps ordering you to bum rush the enemy trench line because fuck it they did it, so shall we. Makes you understand why the clones where all to happy to do it.

Me and my Dad played this game religiously after wearing out the Demo on KOTOR 2 and played a crapton of Battlefront 2. He still has the game, and it plays on the 360, though i believe it's worn out from how much we played this. We always loved the Clone Wars/Prequal era, though that might be because I and him went to see these movies when I was a kid. He is a single father to myself, an only son. Star Wars, for all its flaws, will always be a tie to my dad. When i found it on PSN, I sent him a picture of my playing it, and he was like "damn wish mine worked." We searched and searched for the books after that cliffhanger ending, never found any, and it seems that they never did tie that up. Man, I miss Battlefront 2, this, and KOTOR 2. 2000s games were just better.

"Follow our brothers." It was the title of a chapter during Halo 3's campaign. I know, different franchise, but hear me. It was after the Tsavo Highway, when the Flood had touched down. UNSC Marines and sangheili swordsmen were advancing in cooperation to meet the threat. That title came on screen, and those three words spoke volumes to me. "Follow our brothers." Our brothers...not just the Marines, but the Elites. For that was what we were - brothers in arms, in common cause. For years I have said "Men should be brothers, not foes." Everytime I have heard of tales from the World Wars where two opposing forces chose to unite against their true enemy - the Christmas Truce, where men defied their heartless officers to embrace peace instead of senseless murder; the Battle of Castle Itter, where American troops and the German Army fought shoulder-to-shoulder to defeat an SS death-squad; others I have likely yet not heard, lost to the mists of time - I have repeated that maxim. "Men should be brothers, not foes." It was that three word title that helped foster that belief, that *iron truth* in my heart, a truth engraved in my very bones. The clone soldiers of the Star Wars galaxy have no counterparts to join with, no enmity to overcome in the face of a greater evil. But they are soldiers. They are brothers. They are what all men should be. Follow them. Follow our brothers.

I treat all legends as canon for the most part. There are SOME things from the disney canon that i actually like, especially when they don't necessarily conflict. For instance, a lightsaber crystal used to grow in caves strong with the force, with red crystals being produced artificially by the Sith. The new canon says that the crystals grow in caves strong in the force, but that they become attuned to the wielder of the lightsaber the crystal resides in, and that Sith subjugate the will of the crystal, causing the crystal to "Bleed" and making it red. In my mind that just adds a spiritual layer to the description we had before. This is still very much an Artificial crystal, because the Sith essentially remakes the crystal in their hateful image, rather than allowing the crystal to take it's own form. It connects really nicely with the idea that Sith typically resist the will of the force, and seek to subjugate it to their will.

One important part about how canon star wars handles legends lore is that unless directly stated otherwise, we can assume that a lot of legends stuff still happened in canon. For instance because of Rogue One we know the canon way that the death star plans got to princess Leia, so the old legends lore about that no longer applies. But Delta Squad still shows up in TCW. As long as there's nothing directly stating that Delta Squad didn't do the stuff they did in legends, they could just as well have done it in canon.

I had played all of the LEGO ones before because all I had was a Wii, but I remember vividly going to a house with my parents and having nothing to do when the owner of the house said her son had an Xbox that I could play on if I wanted. I sat and looked through the games until I saw Republic Commando. I couldn’t get past the second level of the game but I remember just being in awe the whole time. I eventually bought the game on the Switch of all things and finally beat it. Thank you again for bringing back those memories, Ghost, you are a fool, but I don’t know what we’d do without you. 💜

As a little kid, I wanted the sequel so bad, but after watching my little brother replaying it when I was home on leave, I agree. The story is done, they should be left alone, the point of commandos is to have the most thrilling raids and important strategic missions that will never be mentioned besides a passing line in a history book to most people, and Sev being left MIA is just a frank truth that no matter how much anyone cares about that individual, to many in the war or people on the outside, he's just a number. A number with cool armor, but still just a number.

Something I've recently been struggling with from the Legends to Canon shift: Mandalorians. They had such a fascinating and deep culture before hand: stretching back to a time where Coruscant had no buildings, to the invasion beings from beyond even the Unknown regions. A culture that shifted from a worshiped Tribunal, to worshiping the concept of war, eventually becoming a split between the cold and cruel battle obsessed [Death Watch] against those who sought to bring virtue while maintaining their warrior routes in an almost paladin-esque way [Super Commandos]. A belief system based on actual native American beliefs, and a culture and religion that change from a valhalla esque afterlife to the concept of a collective Mandalorian Soul that guided and protected all true Mandalorians.... and now all that is left is a cult that throws a tantrum if you ever take off your helmet. I don't mean to sound dismissive as The Mandalorian is one of the few parts I still enjoy, but what's been lost and no longer acknowledged is so great that I can never see the Children of the Watch as anything more than a cult- especially given their practices. There is no greater culture, no growth in the history: just a vague idea of former glory, a belief that anyone who disagrees with you is morally wrong and dead to you, and worship of what is essentially an off brand lightsaber. It was also nice that Mandalorians had their thing with being Manadlore. The leader of the Mandalorians in legends was initially whomever held the initial leader's mask: but as practicality overtook fanaticism, it became whomever the Mandalorians collectively respected- which was a HUGE thing considering just how many there were at any given time. If any Mandalorian is following someone, it is because that person has earned their respect, and to say the entirety of the culture is following you is a statement in it of itself that you are to be respected regardless of any other factors. Due to what Manadlorians considered worth following: in the past being an unmatched zeal for combat, and in later generations a practicality of being able to defend oneself and what they care for- this meant you had to be strong. Yet now to be Mandalore... you must hold the darksaber- which itself is just a slightly different lightsaber. All circling back to one of the biggest problems I've had with Star Wars, and a problem I will fully admit both Legends and Canon have: You only matter if you're force sensitive. All things will inevitably, return to the Jedi and- if it after Anakin's birth- the Skywalker lineage. Because that is all that matters. And unfortunately, with Disney as monolithic as it is, there's a large chance that eventually the idea of that culture will be lost to time. What was once there will become a rare bit of trivia, and little else. Meanwhile the public will only associate the Mandalorians with the statement 'This is the way'. No more Resolnare, no Manda, and Mandalore little more than a planet.

Definitely agree that Delta Squad is best left to this one experience. I think you can easily assume they soon go on to be complicit in Order 66, carrying out their missions in the same calculated manner the player did the whole game. Adds a layer of tragedy and complicity to the experience, the missions lets you feel like the good guy but at the end of the day you're a loyal soldier, and soldiers follow Orders.

While the game is fun, Republic Commando is STUPIDLY short and at least on PC, released with a shitty broken ass port. Would I like another take on this idea, taking clues from games like Left 4 Dead? Indeed. But no way I'm claiming this game was a masterpiece bruh, it released for like 60€ back then and lasts like 3 hours, even back then my standards aren't THAT low. Solid 6/10. The characterization of the squad members was surprisingly good, and the weapon variety was alright, but felt rushed due to the incoming release of Episode III. Also, not having coop? I think Republic Commando is a great short game. I do wish there was a sequel of some kinda. I think this game really formed my love for helping and working with NPCs. I really liked the command functions, simple and direct. I do think that old lore Star Wars is somewhat better, but just barely. Because at least then it felt like there was a bit more heart. Now with Disney bucks, it felt like a cash grab with “Somehow Palps came back”… pretty sure a few of the hundreds of books had something similar, but when the main story has that, it feels so cheap. I’m glad The Clone Wars came back, even if the brain chips makes Order 66 less complicated. I’m glad Andor and Mando are doing well, but there’s so much being shoveled out that it’s like they wanted to replace all of the old lore within 5 years.

I hate the chips, it ruins a lot of the tragedy and many choices clones took during the Order and ruins the narration of the Soldier Diaries in the classic Battlefront 2. And personally, I think even without the chips, Delta Squad probably would join the Empire. They don't really have any strong opinions of the Jedi and didn't do much with them, and would value the lives of their brothers more. Plus, they'll probably associate Yoda with the command of abandoning Sev and would have very personal feelings about that. It's a crime that Six Days in Fallujah is probably going to be the only other game we'll ever have that comes close to the exact gameplay style this masterpiece of a game had.

The Clone Wars ruined a lot of shit that was perfectly fine as it was.
