The best thing about HeroQuest is... ...it's a great toolbox for playing OUR OWN systems!!! 😊 I did this as a 7 year old child on my bedroom floor and I think that's what I'll do again as a middle-aged father. I think I might try something like the combat rules and weapons/equipment/runes from the Rune solo rpg with the HeroQuest components. Great video, mate!! 👍

Hey thanks a lot for the great video! Unless things go south with the print proofs, the next deck in the series, "AxianQuest Infinite Dungeon", will be available by the end of September/early October! The deck is 77 cards (11 quest cards, 11 side quest cards, 7 Evil Mastermind cards, and 48 dungeon cards) and will allow gmless solo/coop play for 1 to 5 heroes. And, of course, it is designed to work seamlessly with the other axianquest decks. That's why some of the Dungeon Events cards specify what to do if there is no Zargon player! - Giuseppe // Axian

This was cool. I have been using Mitchel Hansinger's solo rules (BGG) which randomizes doors in rooms & corridors, furniture, monsters, etc. I haven't played a whole lot but I did see that I was going to have to figure out how to handle traps. I don't want to mess with a lot of decks of cards at the table but some of the expansions you presented look really good. I guess everyone has to find what works for them with randomization & then streamline it. I would try & streamline it for this game to what feels right.

Appreciate this overview! I think it's allowed me to experience HeroQuest vicariously through your videos while realizing I don't need this in my collection. Love your phrase about Restoration Games: design games that feel like the way we remember them, not the way they actually were (or something to that effect). I think that's right on and what companies need to have in mind when revisiting games. We are in a very different place than 20 years ago when it comes to board game design evolution. Although now I need to keep at least any eye on AxianQuest haha.

Fantastic, exactly what I was looking for. However, I am sad because a few days ago I pulled out my original HeroQuest box and took inventory. I discovered I'm missing one treasure card and one battle die. The warrior sword is broken, but amazingly the tip was still in the box. I'm a bit heartbroken that parts are missing, but maybe it's an opportunity to scour ebay for original replacements or to put the new one on my Christmas list.

I love seeing the house rules people use for HeroQuest! I have so many I could share... but for brevity here is just one I came up with. I think it is quite novel, Movement rolls as Initiative. Roll all the heroes movement at the start of the round, then all miniatures act from high to low, monsters use their static values. Example: The rolls are as follows, Barbarian 6 (rolling only 1 dice due to Plate Mail), Dwarf 8, Elf 4, Wizard 11. Then the round goes as follows: Wizard (11), Goblins (10), Dwarf (8), Chaos Warriors (7), Barbarian (6), Skeletons (6, heroes win ties), Elf (4). On another note, you should add some Chaos Dwarfs for HeroQuest, I believe you have some miniatures someone sent you... ;)

Btw. HeroQuest is not so much a "one vs. many", as it's a very light "RPG" with the "overlord" role there to cater in as good an experience as possible 😃
@TheDungeonDive
@TheDungeonDive Жыл бұрын
But it’s adversarial. The evil wizard is still trying to win. You can play as an RPG, but RAW the evil wizard is trying to prevent the heroes from winning. And by any definition it’s still not co-op or solo RAW, and that’s the point I was making, genre semantics aside.
@clwnthr

@@TheDungeonDive True, Daniel. And fair enough, though that was never really the way HeroQuest was perceived back in the day ☺ Which can somewhat be gathered from some of the remarks throughout the different rule-books. E.g.: "Zargon serves as the Game Master." "Zargon, study this book carefully! While it is your guide to running these adventures, it may not answer every question you have during play. When in doubt, use your experience and imagination to make the best choice. Remember that you are the ultimate authority in your HERO QUEST world!" "Zargon, if a Quest ends with disastrous results (such as death for all 4 Heroes), or goes unfinished, you should modify the Quest before it is replayed. You can do this by creating a new adventure using the blank map and symbols at the end of the Quest Book." I'll add a 2008 perception of the game below here, which I found quite good (in reference to Descent at that time) 🙂
@clwnthr
@clwnthr Жыл бұрын
"When did Zargon become such a dick? (heading): Back before 3rd Edition D&D came out we used to play HeroQuest* to get our low impact dungeon-crawling fix. Somebody would get drafted to be Zargon, the pseudo-GM who moved the monsters and read the dungeon description, and the rest of us would pick Elf or Wizard or Barbarian (Dwarf = everyone’s last choice) and stomp around smacking goblins. It never failed to entertain, largely because it required absolutely no prep and was easy to get started, but was basically like playing simplified D&D. Advance the clock a decade and a half and enter Descent. It’s like HeroQuest on steroids: much more nuts and bolts details, customizable characters along with a slightly more liberal interpretation of what a hero should look like (yes, that’s an orc pirate I think), a snazzier map system and a really fantastic set of figures (don’t get me wrong: the HeroQuest figures were awesome and we drafted them for many other games long after we stopped playing it, and the Descent figures will be no exception). Descent calls the pseudo-GM the Overlord, but we are nostalgic so we just call him Zargon instead (regardless of whether “he” is a man or a woman running the game - Zargon is gender-neutral it turns out). Now we’ve played Descent a few times and it’s been okay… but not really, well, fun. In fact a little unfun. It’s a bit perplexing. The game looks like it should be great, and we start off excited, but then it starts to feel aggravating in a way that HeroQuest never did. What’s the wrinkle? The difference (I think) is that unlike HeroQuest, whoever is sitting in the Overlord seat isn’t just moving monsters and deciding who to attack, he (or she) is making plans about when to play cards to bring in more monsters, traps, and other things to smite the heroes. The Overlord is an active decision maker. It’s a small but critical change in the tone of the game. HeroQuest-Zargon is just playing out the scenario in a fairly passive fashion. Descent-Overlord is looking for ways to screw you over. It may be more confusing because on the surface it looks just like an RPG: there are players and a GM, etc. But the similarity is deceptive. A GM in a roleplaying game is not out to kill the player characters. That’s not the job. The GM is there to present a challenge and make the game fun. The GM isn’t really the enemy, because he wants you to win provided you step up to the challenge. But that new Overlord prick is actually out to get you. He’s not your GM. He wants to wipe out the whole party, and the game gives him _lots_ of budget to do it in ways that are more irritating than challenging. It’s adversarial. Now that might be your cup of tea, and in fact competitive gaming is the norm in board games and war games just as it is the exception in roleplaying games, so it’s not that Descent is doing anything strange for a board game, it might just be that we’re used to RPGs. But if you sit down to Descent thinking it’s going to be like playing D&D, you better be sure the Overlord is on the same page. * the board game, not the RPG that came later" "#4 ben robbins said: March 17, 2008 at 12:49 pm We tried playing a game using Descent rules modified to be more like HeroQuest (no threat tokens, no Overlord deck, random traps, no teleporting, etc). The verdict? A lot more fun. Even Zargon seemed to have a better time. The improvement seemed to be about 50% less Zargon’s a dick and 50% less silliness in the metaphor - dying and then teleporting right back into the fight never seemed to match the adventurer/hero metaphor. The design also seemed to fail to understand players. Players don’t like dying, so making dying & resurrection casual and using conquest tokens as the “real” measure of success grates on the nerves. Dying should be noteworthy.""

It’s such a simple game it’s incredibly easy to make house rules for. Thats half the reason its had such staying power. People who’ve never played it will try it and say ‘uh, this seems very dated it must be all nostalgia’. That’s isn’t it. It’s the the game is incredibly simple to tack on whatever you would like to add to it. Want Zargon to have more fun? He gets a token every round to spend on a chart like, say 2 tokens gives an orc a spear and a two square attack range, four gives him a bow, five allows Zargon to place a trapand so on. Or maybe combat is a bit simplistic for you. Add variant modifiers you roll on a table to add damage, hit points, spells etc to the critters when they spawn. You can add tons of nuance and complexity with rules that fit on an index card. And it still takes 5 minutes to set up.

I know these deep dive, multi part video series are not as good for the algorithm, but on the other hand, they will always be relevant and will have a very long tail. In terms of an actual contribution to the hobby, I think they are pretty significant. You could almost look at heroquest as elementary analysis or algebra one. You should be able to understand the game's contribution to board game design and everything that came after.

Wow. Fantastic episode. And a lot of stuff for HeroQuest that I did not know yet, although I am a big fan of the game (Pure nostalgia). I have not bought any of the new stuff from Hasbro, because I own all the old European stuff for the game. And the scale difference between the new and old version is putting me off. So it is really nice with some great "new" unofficial stuff I can use for the game. Thanks. I am ok with Hasbro not updating the game a little to make it a bit more modern, and keeping it close to the original. Also because of the upcoming Dungeon Saga Origins from Mantic, witch I backed on KS. After reading the draft rules for the game that they provided for the KS, it was pretty obvious to me that Mantic was trying to make a modern HeroQuest. Keeping a few of the best parts of the original Dungeon Saga, then mixing it with the best parts of HeroQuest and making the game more simple, while addressing the biggest issues of both games. So I am really looking forward to that game as well.

@AndreasRugtvedNeumann
@AndreasRugtvedNeumann Жыл бұрын
@@clwnthr Yes, they did get rid of the race/time mechanic. It is not part of the main game mechanic anymore. But maybe there are still some single quests that uses a race/time mechanic some way? I have not seen all the content. You can still find the draft rulebook for Origins, if you search for "Dungeon saga origin rulebook" on Google. It is a good read with some really nice ideas. Origins is a completely new game. I think it feels more closer to HeroQuest now, than the original Dungeon Saga. At least that is my takeaway after looking at the rules and some gameplay content. The only thing they kept from Dungeon Saga was the combat system (Opposed rolls, importance of facing, Brake away from monsters etc.) and the setting. Everything else is new and much closer to HeroQuest now.
@AndreasRugtvedNeumann
@AndreasRugtvedNeumann Жыл бұрын
Some major key differences to Dungeon Saga: Movement and actions are now more flexible and easy. You can move and attack and vice versa. The order doesn't matter anymore. You can also move past your friendly hero. No more blocking each others move. You can now search for treasure and secret doors in mostly the same way as in HeroQuest. There is a exploration deck similar to the treasure deck in HeroQuest. Spells are now "cast one time" cards just like in HeroQuest. The board tiles are now bigger modules that can be put together very fast. It is more similar to HeroQuest, were you do not use any room on the board in a single quest. The solo/co-op mode has been designed doing the game development and is a important feature of the game now. It has not been attached on in a weird broken manner like with the original DS. Mantic is developing a solo/co-op app for the game, that is requiring minimal player interaction. Mantic has also added a bit more character development compared to HeroQuest. All Hero's have some individual skills and get a bit of XP for completing quests that can be used to buy heroic boons between quests. Overall DS Origins just feels slightly more advanced than HeroQuest. Adding a bit more tactical combat, more interesting decisions doing gameplay and more character development.

after a couple of games of using the app, I figured it was easier to just not use the board and used the app to keep track of the characters where they moved and had dice and cards on the side. Heck, other than the treasure deck I could probably avoid using the cards too...

Hey Daniel, I’m back here after picking up HQ from Amazon for $66 (thanks for the heads up!) Would it be possible for you to kind of sum up this video in terms of what you think is the most streamlined collection of materials that you use for solo for your patrons?

I find the app frustrating as twice now on my ipad it has crashed halfway through the game which basically ends it. I’ve have better success with my phone but the downside is, small screen. I also grew up on D&D, early Warhammer and Middle Earth role playing (MERP). One of my cousins was also into RPG’s. I can still remember when he introduced me to MERP and Traveller back in the 1980’s.

I will, at certain points, just to have more variety. I probably won't ever use the large stacks of treasure cards I printed out. But I keep them in the HQ box just in case.

Hi Dungeon Dive. So for someone who didn’t play this game in the past do you recommend buying this game for solo only? The main reason I’m attracted to this game is because I like simplicity, tried many different dungeon crawlers and many times I find them a chore to play with all the different card decks and never ending tokens. Also because English is a second language I don’t like reading rulebooks, I don’t have a problem learning complex games but for me sometimes it take me days to read them, that’s why I love Fantasy Flight their rulebooks are great to read and this game attracts me since it’s an easy game to get back on the table after taking breaks from it. I don’t like using APPs in my board games so I’m having hard time deciding about this game, I know there’s a lot of fan made content for the game and few expansions but not sure if they are usable with those cards variant you show in this video. Basically I’m looking for a simple game that has some sort of a campaign that keeps me busy for a long time. Also if I get this game I will get those cards from drive through but are there other solo variants that you recommend without the app? I just finished watching this video and the first one, will watch the second HQ video you made tomorrow!.

As I said in this video, I have zero nostalgia for HQ, and never played it in the past, and I like it for solo play with a bunch of the fan made supplements. This whole video mentions tons of things I use for solo without the app. As a matter of fact, the first pinned comment contains links to everything!

Great video!! I sold my copy a few years ago and there definitely wasn’t so much fan made content back then! The new Hero quest really reignited the community’s passion on making more contents - although Talisman probably still sits at the throne of games with most fan made content.

I also remember using Ninjadog’s solo rules but found it too tedious after awhile due to the amount of rolling on tables (so many dice roll just for placing doors/ furnitures!) It felt more like a solo rpg than a board game but without procedure to handle the RP part (need to add your own oracle / systems to handle those situations). At some point l, it just felt too much for me and that was when I found your WHQ videos. For me, WHQ was able to solve all these problems so elegantly with just 2 things - event cards / dungeon cards - no house rules needed, no tedious rolling tables (only d6 or d66s), even roleplay rules are included! It just made me wonder if it is worth the effort to go the extra miles just to make HQ a less elegant version of WHQ.

One thing I like about HQ is the static board. I always know how much space it's going to take up on the table!
@BlackPepperGameStudio

@@MelvLee man I sooooo hate having to forever roll dice after dice on tables just to set up one room! In the upcoming solo deck, there is only 1 table you must consult, and only once, when you set up the board. After that, while you explore, you simply open a door and check the cards. The exact position of the next door is decided by the youngest player. You only roll a die when you open a door to a corridor. If you roll a skull, a patrol of monsters is the corridor. Everything else is handled by the cards you put on the rooms.
