This is the best tutorial of the dwarf out there. Amazing job man. Have been following your work in the Heroquest FB pages. I started painting the furniture this week and once done I'm going to move into the heroes. Your tutorials will be very instructive! Thanks

You are too kind 😊 The look is born of the character art, always a great source of inspiration for colours. As for highlight placement I try to envisage where the sun would naturally hit the figure. It’s gone over in more detail in the Marvel: Crisis Protocol videos as the minis themselves are painted to a higher standard than HQ.

Another excellent guide. A small piece of feedback: I struggled a bit with the highlighting of the gold and silver colors. Now I've never highlight metals before watching your videos, so its a new to me. But I wasn't sure how to approach it. Normally when working with skin and shades, I'll have a few different colors I'm blending and building up with a light focus. But with just two shades of metal, I felt like I was just painting over almost all the Leadbelcher and Retributor armor with the Ironbreaker and Auric Armor. I did get some depth with the technique but not as much as you. A few short sentences about how you approach highlighting metals (or how its the same as other materials) would be helpful in the future, as well as more camera time showing you highlighting the metals. Overall, small nitpick, thrilled how my dwarf turned out, thanks so much!

Thanks for the critique Edgar, believe it or not these kind of comments can really help me improve the tutorial aspect of my future vids so it’s greatly appreciated! I get what you’re saying about the two colours, though admittedly that is essentially how I used them, covering most of the base then edge highlighting. I think I figured after explaining it with the skin and tunic people wouldn’t want me repeating myself, my bad. What you describe is one of the rubs I have with using true-metallic metal or TMM, you end up with a global highlight rather than a light focused one due to the reflectivity of the paint. There are a couple of ways to mitigate this I’ve found and I’ll certainly try to go in depth on them when they come up in future vids. For now, the first option is to mix a little acrylic into the metallic, much as described in the Dreadknight pdf. This’ll tone the reflectivity down a bit and give you a more more brushed metal finish. The other is actually a range of paints I’ve recently started using by Scale 75 called “Metal ‘n’ Alchemy”. They’re designed more like our acrylic base and layer paints and create some really fantastic transitions, they aren’t cheap though. Once again thanks for the feedback and I’ll try to improve on my future content. Have a great day.

It's a shame all these painting tutorials on youtube use citadel paints, they are a complete and utter rip off, disgusting prices, valejello not much better. You can get quality acrylic paints for about a tenth of the price, also buy a basic set of inks from say FW of Magic Color and make all the washes, contrasts, and shades you could ever need for probably £100s of savings!

I hear what you’re saying. They are the predominant leaders in the market and thus easiest for people to acquire or reference too though. Of course use whatever paints and colours you prefer.
