What do you guys think, is 117 horsepower enough for a $12,500 bike? Would you pick this over the 148 horsepower GSXR750?

I agree except for the 40 number. If you live where its hot or at high altitude, 40 to 45 isn't going to cut it. 55 to 60 hp is the bare minimum IMO and the A2/LAMS BS is really the only reason we have suffer with less than 50 in the USA. Even a carbed 500 could do 50+ hp back in the day, modern 400 and 500 twins should be at 55 to 60 hp minimum.

Folks are talking fully and completely out of their asses about this bike. “It’ll never be an r1!” It isn’t trying to be. “ONLY 117 hp???” With a tune they’ll make about 120 to the wheel and 70 ft lbs, 55 ft lbs at 3k rpm. Bike weighs 430 wet so after exhaust and tidy it’ll be 415 or less. People have such a backwards sense of what is and isn’t fast. This bike will outride the majority of the people that pony up and throw a leg over one. It’ll be an excellent street bike, and the aftermarket is already huge for them. The biggest reason this exists is because Yamaha now puts this engine in 5 motorcycles. It’s making dividends on it R&D.

The huge issue with the the cp3 is that people are falsely overstating the gains from tunes and always have. Tunes on the latest cp3 deliver next to nothing in power but they do deliver the perception of power by altering the throttle maps and reducing the engine braking. So people believe that their bike has been transformed when it hasn't.

I think people have warped a warped perspective on power figures for bikes. My first bike was an SV650 with 76hp. Doesn't sound like much, and people are calling this a "beginner bike" or even "slow". But objectively speaking, the SV650 can do 0-60 in around 3.4s or 3.5s which is faster than a lot of Porsches, Ferraris and Corvettes. Having not looked it up, I think the MT09 would be something around 3.0s. That is blisteringly quick, by any standard.
@MrBCRC
@MrBCRC 7 күн бұрын
Being able to wheelie it in the low gears isn't evidence. The mt09 is gutless above 150km/h and while aero plays a part, the peak hp on the engine is 500rpm short of the revlimiter. 130 horsepower cannot be easily achieved with "some mods".

@@TomHenksYT I raced one of those new C8 corvettes at a red light on my MT-09. It was neck and neck, I didn't realize how fast the new corvettes were and told him so at the next light. He didn't realize how fast the MT-09 was, because it looks like a smaller bike lol. But yeah, below 130-150km/hr the MT-09 is absurdly fast; in the lower gears, it's instant--almost violent--torque whenever you want it. I was thinking about selling my MT-09 for an R9, but I'm just not a fan of the looks. I'd rather buy an older used supersport and just use that on days that I'm in that kind of mood/track, and keep the MT for everything else.

As someone with a 675 daytona other thing that bothers me is the rpm, I love to rev my bike out to 14.4k, 10.5k just doesn't seem right for a sport bike. If MV can get a claimed 147hp out of their 800cc triple I don't see why yamaha couldn't get close with 90cc's more. These manufacturers know whats gonna sell. Times have changed drastically. The engineers can put together low cost 20yr old engine and chasis tech, put effort into fairing design and electronic tech and people are loving it. We saw the GOLDEN ERA come and go. If euro regulations didnt force the massive surge of parallel twins to cut down on emissions we never would've believed these bikes would be in high demand. But the kids love them. If this R9 was released 20yrs ago it would've been the biggest upset in Yamaha history. As specially having it side by side with the Triumph Daytona and Speed/Street triple that were much lower costing than the supersports and superbikes.

I feel like we’ve reached a notable point in time where comparing one motorcycle to another (or even cars at this point) based on “performance” metrics is moot. Vehicles in general have come such a long way and are so damn good all around that it really comes down to getting what you like in terms of looks and feel. Power really isn’t anything anymore. I recently had WAY more fun in a rental VW GTI than I’ve had in years in other vehicles. The feel, the sounds, the on-rails handling in such a daily friendly package mattered so much more than knowing that some schmuck in a V8 mustang could “beat me” in a silly street race between stoplights. I’m fortunate enough to own a XSR900GP and basically all of the amazing features in that bike has made it to the R9. It’s gonna be fun to ride for sure as the CP3 engine is a blast and has so much power to give when needed. I LOVE the 900GP. Aesthetics aside, this bike will be fun. In comparison with the Suzuki, I can’t say as I’ve never ridden that but you do make some valid points. I’m looking forward to see real reactions when people get on the R9. I came from an R6 and went to the XSR900GP. Love them both but the GP just feels so much better on the street.

The R9 has plenty of useable horsepower on the street. The GSX-R 750 has a very tight rider triangle that would make it difficult for a lot of riders to spend a whole day on it. If the R9 gives you more space in the cockpit, i.e. a longer seat to peg distance, I would definitely DEFINITELY go for it instead, because you could actually be out riding all day instead of just going for a short blast.

It depends: (A) what you’re buying it for (for aggressive super sport riding incl. track use, or for the super sport look and road riding), and (B) whether you’re coming up to, or down to, this power figure. If you’re coming up from a Ninja 650, or an MT-07/R7, you’ll be thrilled. If you’re coming down from a ZX-10R/GSXR then yeah, you’ll likely be left wanting a little more.

After hearing your horsepower complaints, once I get the ecu flashed and get some power mods this thing will be a beast just because stock they didn't give it power doesn't mean i cant get power out of it. and you compared it to the bike i wanteed the gsxr-750 i still might want the suzuki but the R9 has the tech and can be modded, but after hearing that again im still considering the 750.

I have a 2023 MT 09, and I can assure you, it's a LOT faster than my wife's R6. As you did point out, it's how the power is delivered. It's wicked. Not quite as wicked as the Kawasaki Z1000 I had, but not far off in overall go. And the MT 09 is so lightweight! The real key here, as with most bikes these days, if not all, is to have the ECU reflashed by a quality tech, like VCyclenut. After the reflash, like my Z1000 before it, it transformed the beast into, well, a smoother yet significantly meaner beast. Reflash on the CP3 engine makes a great one much better. Cool to see this platform for a supersport.

We didn’t have a lot of room to keep going so of course like I said not a great comparison, but with full fairings, a good map, and a decent rider mod, I feel this thing can compete with most middle class bikes.

Hp being on par with available 600s is enough. And the R9s modern spec makes up the price difference as well. The gsxr750 is still great. But it still ships on bt016s! And the price you list is outdated by about 2 yrs. With that and by the time you put tires brake lines pads and maybe even fork cartridges and a shock on a 750 to get it up to date the price gap becomes significant.

On the race track I prefer and appreciate the possibility of higher revs with the GSXR and in the whole the running culture and engine character of an inline four. At the end it is a question of taste and the difference between the two bikes will be slightly. For sure the R9 is the more modern bike. In respect to the slight difference between the two bikes in their performance as a whole, this is to my opinion a great compliment for the GSXR as a 13 year old bike in its construction and shows that the greatest difference is in regard to electronics and not to forget in emission regulations.😇

There's a pretty obvious reason why the engine "only" makes 117hp. It's because it's the same engine as in the MT-09. If they had retuned the engine to produce a lot more top-end power, it would lose some of its characteristic mid-range torque that people are so fond of, and it would also make the bike more expensive.
