Rambling Rachel Trail Tales

Күн бұрын

Join me and my friend Steph in the North Yorkshire Dales National Park.
At 52 miles (84 km) the Herriot Way is normally walked over four days, each of approximately 13 miles (21 km) per section. However, we did it over four and a half days because we wanted to include a wild camp and had to consider a half-day drive to get there. Steph and I made up our own itinerary; however, I recommend following the one in the book if you have never done anything like this. For full details on the Herriot Way with details on how to purchase the guidebook, please click on the link below:
www.herriotway...
In this video, we begin our journey from Aysgarth Falls, presenting some of the county's most specular waterfalls. From here onwards, we walk towards the quaint little village of Aysgarth and onto the village of Askrigg. This section of the trail is mostly flat, following the River Ure through rolling farmland and green pastures. We stop at the Crown Inn campsite, £10 a night per person. We stopped at the White Rose Hotel for a very pleasant meal and sampled the local ale. The village of Askrigg is worth exploring, including its Church. Skeldale House is on the main road, and you'll spot a vintage car just outside like the one James Herriot would have driven back in his early career as a Vet. This house is where the original 'All Creatures Great and Small' was filmed! The guidebook has all the information in it. It is worth buying if you attempt this walk.
I didn't track my mileage particularly accurately, but it was about 6 to 7 miles from Aysgarth Falls to the Crown Inn in Askrigg. It was a good start to the week, with many comedy moments trying to get through the tiny sheep squeeze gates along the route. The route is fairly easy to follow on a paper map or GPS file but do keep your wits about you. The waymarkers and signposts do blend into the environment and are not always easy to see from a distance.
If you have any questions about this walk, please leave me a comment or drop me a message on Facebook or Instagram. I tend to use these social media platforms more frequently.
I hope you enjoy this series. Please do consider subscribing to the channel if you like what you see. Thank you for your support.
Filmed on an iPhone XR (I took four little battery packs for the week, which was sufficient).
Edited using iMovie.

Beautiful first day. Those rivers are definitely in full flow. The names of the starting place and your camp site sound like Norse places. Aysgard, the home of the Gods. I digress. Great vlog Rachel, thanks for sharing.

Been going to Aysgarth Falls since I was a kid but it has to be 3 or even 4 years since we were there last but always a spectacular sight to behold. May was wet Up North too but thankfully we had a great June and I love the market Cross and church in Askrigg. Basic facilities for your camp but at least you had the pub right next to your tents, as well as the awesome view. Cheers Alan

I never heard of James Herriot until I came across this trail and did my research. I have now watched all three seasons of the latest 'all creatures great and small', I love it! The characters are fantastic and its genuinely a heart warming story. My favourite character is Tricky Woo! x

My dog is named Herriot after the famous veterinarian. (She is both great and small.) There is such a big difference between hiking in England and hiking in the United States where I live. So different but both very beautiful. Thank you for this video.

I've been watching the recent remake of All Creatures Great and Small over the last few weeks, love it! Never read the books thou. Yorkshire is a unique area of England, so beautiful. I must admit, hiking in America does seem more hazardous with rattlesnakes and bears! The only major issue in England is the blooming weather lol! Thanks for watching.

@@ramblingracheltrailtales Does England have moose, bison, cougars, alligators...? I have never encountered any of those but one time I found myself in a tornado while on the trail. So, we need to be mindful of weather as well. Happy trails!

Good start Rachel - it wasn't tipping down at least and out of the blocks mostly flat. Love the look of Yorkshire villages. Yeah, reminded me of 'All Creatures Great and Small.' As for the camp - ideal. Well, all the best as you go. Mark

Watching now, thank goodness i saw you at Yasmins! I like the sound of the Herriot Way. £17.50 for a week is a good price. Wow those falls are very impressive. Pinch gate? I like that name! Nicely done. River Ure looked very full. I liked the stepping stones. That was some drive you had to get to the starting point, i bet you were dying to stretch your legs after that drive. Loved the old motor in Askrigg. Campsite to yourselves, superb! Wig wam time! 😂 a superb video, the food and beer looks lovely! ❤

The guidebook referred to the sheep squeezes as pinch gates, I presume this is the offical name for them? We wanted to leave the vehicle somewhere fairly secure, this car park seemed to be ok. Day one was a nice warm up for the rest of the week. Askrigg is also a very nice village too. Thanks for watching. Have a good week. x

Nice video lovely views that’s for sure. Do you spend a lot of time walking the tow paths around where you live? My wife and I hired a Narrowboat from braunston a few years ago, it was a lovely few days rest, we don’t have any canals in Essex where we live

Hi 👋 Yes I do walk the local canal networks. I’d say most of Northants best walks are around by the canals or rivers, being mostly a lowland region. I know Braunston well, several nice pubs in the village and a lovely marina too.
