Update;Magnus has had a lovely clean eye for over a year now, for some reason it just put itself right. Maybe just keeping it clean was the cure, maybe the massage, perhaps both things who knows but a great outcome for Magnus bunny :)

I'm watching this is 2021 but it's incredibly helpful!!! My rabbit is going through the same thing and we're treating it, but it's good to know that we're doing the right thing by washing his eyes and taking him to the vet regularly.

What a lovely rabbit your Magnus is! He was so calm and patient during his treatment. Thank you for sharing. Our bunny has a crusty eye corner which could start an eye infection so we have an appointment with the vet in a couple of days to have it looked at. Our girl is a very friendly six year old dwarf lop, now a singleton since her sister passed on so she misses out on some of the grooming that another rabbit would provide. So we do our best with daily brushing, frequent stroking and a rub over her head, sides and back with a dampened flannel to simulate a rabbit washing her, especially when she's moulting and she loves this! She eats well; plenty of hay and fresh greenery daily, occasional treats and plenty of human attention, companionship and contact. She enjoys being read to, finding the boxes or paper bags of fancy hay that we hide all over the house for her to find and munch. She likes to play with us too, sometimes with her following us and vice versa and sometimes other games, such as knocking over and throwing cardboard tubes or digging for treats in a box of hay or crushed paper, tearing packing paper to shreds, the usual things. She is alert and affectionate and often jumps onto our laps and washes us while being brushed or petted but she won't stay still long enough for us to wash her eye fully and like most rabbits, dislikes being picked up and held, hence the visit to the vet. Your rabbit is lovely and it's great that his eye problem has cleared up at last. May I ask why you chose Magnus for his name?

Thank you so much for uploading this video. My bunny had a poorly eye and yesterday I realised it wasn't going to clear up on it's own, with it being Easter Sunday it seemed unfair to call a vet out for an eye problem so decided to bathe it. I just know without your video I would have made a big fuss over it and probably upset her but your video showed your rabbit quite enjoying it so I just did it with her in her bunny bed and she was really happy. This morning her eye looks well again and she's flopping around. Thanks so much.

Thank you, my rabbit has weepy eye, and I was hoping the other bunny would help, but she's def the top bun, so no go. Now I know since it's very white, I can take care of it myself. It was really nasty, a lot accumulated, and I just cleaned it, and he LOVED it. So it will be part of his daily grooming. I have massaged under his eyes, and I can feel the stuff moving under the skin. He seems to like that, too. BUT REMEMBER, gentle gentle is KEY~for everything for your buns and all your babies (I have mice, cockatiel, and guinea pig.) peace

The stuff from a blocked tear duct is very white, unlike the infection type puss which is more yellowy in colour. A visit to the vet is not a bad idea if you're not sure which type it is, eyes are delicate things after all and you don't want to take chances. Someone with a lot of small animal experience told me recently that massaging the tear duct helps too. He said the tear duct is just below the corner of the eye and is horseshoe shaped. I have been gently massaging Magnus's tear duct every day and he is definitely getting less seepage so it seems to be working.

Omg I love you! You’re hilarious!! You remind me exactly if myself with the tuft of hair! I’m obsessed with pulling them and they don’t always let you but they come right out! Anyway I literally JUST DID ALL THIS! I am so reassured now that I saw your video. He had some crust that I hadn’t wiped off as I assumed he would. Today I decided it had to come off so I wet a baby rag and wiped around his face like you did but I hadn’t seen this video yet so wasn’t sure I was ok to do it. He seemed fine so I figured it was helpful & necessary. I still see a little stuff in two ducts so wanted to wipe again so went to google to ensure what I was doin was safe. I found this video and am so happy to see it & what I did was ok! Thank you!

He’s a beautiful fellow. My poppy has blocked tear ducts and she’s ten this year. It gets gunky real quick and she has to go to the vets for treatment. I need a way to keep her under control at home so speaking to the vet today for further guidance. Fingers crossed

My bunny seems to have the same problem although she isn't her happy self. We hsve been washing it out twice a day as it can get pretty blocked. We are taking her to the vet tommorow. Was just wondering what it is as she is a bit down and seems in pain.

Hi my rabbit has a teary duct and has been to the vets and they gave anti-biotics. The vet said that if they don't work he needs the duct to be cleared out yet he is quite young and I don't think he would be happy undergoing the operation as its already quite a task to get him to the vets as he is terrified. Do you think your method would work and help him to get better? Thank you please reply
@HervorandWeyland8 жыл бұрын
+Anita B Hi Anita, sorry for the delay replying. I guess your vet must have thought bunny had a secondary infection to prescribe antibiotics unless he/she was playing safe. Anyhow, just in case bunny has an infection I would be cautious about massaging until the antibiotics have done their job. The lacrimal gland is located at the corner of the eye where the weepiness is coming from and is horseshoe shaped. I don't know if there is a correct technique but I used very, very gentle circular motions in each direction as if to dislodge any contents so they can find their way out. Magnus seemed to enjoy his daily massage so I'm sure your bunny will too. As I said in the video, Magnus didn't like his vet experience and the blockage returned after a month anyway. The only other thing I could suggest is that you get bunny's tear duct flushed and whilst you're at the surgery get the vet to explain exactly where the duct is and suggest best technique to massage it for keeping it clear after the flushing. Best of luck :)

Is It Necessary To Take The Bunny To A Vet For A Weepy Eye? Or It Could Be Easier To Just Wash The Eye With A Cloth?
@HervorandWeyland8 жыл бұрын
It depends on how bad it is really, I took him to the vet for a tear duct flush in the hope that it would clear the problem up because the weeping was making the skin around his eye inflamed. Having the duct flushed out was done under anaesthetic and it upset him so much I didn't want to do it to him again. Besides, the problem recurred in a few weeks anyway which was why I decided to just give him a daily wash instead. After that I was introduced to someone who told me how to massage the duct gently and it sorted his problem more or less. I've never been confident exactly what I'm feeling when I massage under his eye but I guess I must be in the right region as it stays clear. The duct (I was told) is horseshoe shaped, so feel gently for it and see what you think :)

To be on the safe side, I'd recommend it. One of my bunnies had a teary eye and I thought it was just from her hair getting into her eye. So I removed the hair and waited for it to get better. Just a day later it was so infected that I was worried she could lose the eye, so I hurried to the vet. Had I gone sooner, the bacterial outbreak might have been prevented. Won't make that mistake again.

I'm not sure if my rabbit has this problem- she's a 2 month old holland lop and she seems healthy but when looking at some pictures from today and yesterday (I got her yesterday night) her eyes looked fine yesterday but there is a little bit of white, like a lower version of the tears in eyes they have in movies, is that a problem or is it normal?

Is there a way to clear out a tear duct at home? The vet wants $58-$62 just for a checkup not including the procedure & medicine. We don't have the $. I'm certain that's what he needs.
