For this showcase we spoke to Peter Melville founder of HEVRA, the Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Repair Alliance, to find out how their network of skilled EV garages and technicians are providing a valuable service and reassurance to the growing number of EV owners here in the UK and overseas.
Repair anxiety may not be a familiar phrase, but it can be a barrier for people looking to get their first EV. With more and more EVs on the road, and with a growing used market, in the unfortunate circumstances that something goes wrong with it, will your local garage have the skillset and tools to fix it?

Great video and refreshing content. As the buyer of a s/h ev that has a fault where the dealer is struggling to find an economic repair solution and the main dealer wants 90% of the purchase price to possibly fix it. I can only applaud this initiative. We need to have an eco system that works to get a reasonable long life out of evs. We need a right to repair at a reasonable (economic) cost, not the highly proffitable module swap strategy of the manufaturers and dealers with all the attendant e-waste.

Great episode and very informative. We need to start making car makers accountable for a cost and material effective replacement policy for car-parts. Being green is also that it should be possible to repair a car as cost effective as possible.

I'm one of those wanna be owners doing research. We use a lovely independent garage who have saved me hundreds of pounds against the dealership, not least by refusing to do work on faults that didn't exist. Really sad that the last time I spoke to the owner he was utterly ignorant of evs and had no intention of changing or adding to his business. It was right at the beginning of my research a couple of years ago (been isolating so not seen him since) and he thought evs were dangerous because if the battery fails they could stop dead at high speed! I knew he was wrong even then but didn't have enough technical knowledge to put him right. I shall be seeing him again soon and if he's not changed his ideas I'll explain exactly why he's wrong and suggest he contacts HEVRA. If not he has a rival in the same town who is a member and I'll be going there, which is handy.

For context, the failed component Peter shows is an Analog Devices LTC6802 (a small fairly normal battery monitoring chip, which makes perfect sense). It costs about $17 in moderate quantities. The whole battery monitoring board shown (if Mitsubishi sold it) would probably cost a couple hundred bucks or less as a replacement part. Really great to see an initiative like this; model-specific information sharing can be a huge boon to troubleshooting and repair productivity, and although EVs require generally less service overall than combustion vehicles, it's still important to have service centers familiar with the (sometimes quite different) components and effective techniques to ensure only the minimum amount of failed components get replaced to ensure they're cost effective to operate.

"Hevra" is a similar word to the Hebrew "chevra," which means a group of friends or colleagues. Nicely chosen name, whether or not it was intentional.

Which is in turn very similar to the French word chévre, which is a type of soft goat's milk cheese.

@@rlaxton666 Excellent observation. I think, in terms of timing (though not causation), the order goes goats --> goat's milk cheese --> Hebrew word --> French word --> excellent new EV garage/technician coalition --> EV filled with friends holding bags of goat's milk cheese

Interesting point Peter makes about the manufacturer only making a part available as a single unit. I had a faulty bearing in my EV motor, and Kia replaced the entire drive unit. The dealer said it was not possible to just replace the bearing assembly. Fortunately, it was under warranty.

@@AdamKimball Interestingly, the whole replacement was about CDN $6500 and took 2 days. They told me if it was petrol it would have been about $12K and would take +/- 10 days.

Funny that I bought a 2012 chevy volt here about 10 months ago with 109K miles for my mother's caregiver. She only drove it for 3,000 miles and last week the big battery died on us. It is only one module (Module 7) that is broke but Chevrolet won't repair it. They want $10K for a replacement battery. Found a mechanic who will buy it for $4K and will try to repair it. I hope he is successful. I have recommended 6 of these used Chevy volts to friends who drive less than 30 miles a day and they all love it. It kind of broke my heart to see this one die on us. Let us hope for more EV mechanics who can work on these cars. Great video and good timing!

If you don't have a Hevra garage near you then from personal experience I would recommend Cleevely EV who are Hevra members and offer a mobile nationwide service and repair option. Their expertise, commitment, customer service and value for money is second to none in my opinion.

I like the idea of a mechanic typing your number plate into the computer & gives them a list of the most common faults.

My Mitsubishi 2012 I-miev was rear ended while standing still and it was pushed into the Mercedes in front of me. All that was damaged was body panels. No damage to frame or battery pack, was able to drive it home. It was considered totaled since all body panels would have to be shipped from Japan to California and since it was at the start of covid it was scrapped.

My Lex 300id front was crumpled, they wanted to replace the hood and grill and repaint the whole front end so it would match the hood. I wanted to replace the hood, cheap paint it black make a grill out of screen, test drive it for a while to see if the body is twisted, but then it would have a salvage title, problematic for insurance, so it became scrap.

Really simple concept to have every dealer have a Hevra backed technician or two that can call on a wealth of information, how to fix. Information flowing back and forth after all the tech can report on what they have found or a new fix.

I would love an EV BUT I could only afford a used one for under £10k in the future and the problem is even though I understand they are more reliable, if and when they do go wrong it's going to cost a lot more from reports I see in EV forums, even with access to these HEVRA garages. Yes, I could get an extended warranty but I feel I should not have to pay extra on any vehicle if it's supposed to be more reliable? I just hope things improve with more access to affordable EVs and repairs in the future.

Mark, the very first question to ask is if those whom claim EV's cost a *lot* more to repair have actually owned EV's, and had repairs carried out? There is a tremendous amount of misinformation being peddled out there, usually by people whom have never had any EV experience whatsoever. There are even rumours of oil company funded "plants" whom have seemingly been paid or contracted to spread anti EV nonsense. One of the latest howlers I've seen is the claim that you cannot rapid charge more than once on a long trip..... In any case Mark, when it comes to used electric cars, the majority of used EV's on sale should still be carrying at least a year or two of their original warranty.

@@Brian-om2hh I understand there can be miss formation but I've followed quite a few groups like the Renault Zoe owners club and multiple people have had the same issues, with multiple people expressing the opinion that you need an extended warranty which I feel is excessive on an already expensive vehicle. Like I said I'm a big fan of electric vehicles I've been following them for years and even own Tesla shares, I'm just worried with the age of vehicle I'm going to be able to afford if anything does go wrong it's going to be very expensive to repair due high cost of parts and the limited amount of people that can service it

Excellent to hear about this as up until now our cars have been going to the main dealer as my old garage does not want to touch my mitsubishi PHEV or the leaf. So looking on the website I've got a garage about 10 miles away so I'll be giving them a call for the next service. Keep up the good work all of you 👍

The story about the battery pack, reminds me of our local electrician, who did exactly that to our fine, somewhat expensive but some years old dishwasher. He found the faulty component on the circuit board and replaced it on the spot by the use of his soldering iron. Don't know if he just has the experience or member of an alliance, like HEVRA, but the dishwasher has since been working flawlessly for years.

An excellent video that gives me a little more confidence that there are hopefully people out there that understand EV’s. It’s interesting to hear your comments regarding dealerships, I’m a retired technician and I worked as a workshop controller for a vehicle fleet management company which enabled me to gain experience on many different manufacturers and I was fortunate enough to have EV training on both Volvo and Renault vehicles. However, one of the big problems I had was prising information out of the dealer network, they seem to have a policy of drip feeding information and although I did multiple different courses, in reality none of them involved in depth electrical training and were therefore pretty useless. As I mentioned, I have now retired and I drive an MG5 EV that I love driving and was interested in having a more in depth understanding of the cars electrical systems so I attempted to search out any technical information I could find but it has proven an impossible and fruitless to find any documentation whatsoever. The dealership is clueless and in fact offered me a job which amused me somewhat. The other interesting thing is that the MG boasts a modular battery so that faulty cells are replaceable should the occasion arise, the problem will be finding someone capable of doing the work so hopefully DEFRA will be the place to go👍

Southern California - I found EV repair shops near me! We should transition incentives from purchasing new EVs to keeping old ones on the road after it's financially impractical, especially battery replacement, more options for lower income people.

Essentially HEVRA are a subscription based Hynes manual/EV repair forum for garages. Not a bad business model, could do well if enough garages adopt it.

That replace battery pack to fix a BMS chip failure reminds me of a Rich Rebuilds video where Tesla wanted to sell a customer a complete battery pack because a coolant union had been broken off by road debris and they were able to fix the issue by just fitting a new union

@@alanrickett2537 I'm gonna guess you haven't seen the video I'm referring to then. The work was carried out at the Electrified Garage by an ex-Tesla engineer. Rich didn't touch it, just filmed the repair and put it on his channel.

@@austenchevalier917 yes he had some half way competent people working for him but as they are working for a idiot you have to doubt their judgement when they could do so much better for themselves setting up on their own. But you will note they invalidated the customer warranty on his battery pack and didn't offer one of their own.

I definitely hope the electric vehicle association in the United States can partner with this British group. I love my Mitsubishi i-MiEV and would love to keep him running. It seems the service centers are becoming farther and farther away to the point I will have to ship the car. Dealership mechanics here are more likely to replace the entire battery system and still not have solved why my DC quick charging no longer works with Electrify America.

I'm always surprised to hear Robert refer to his unhappy ICE car experiences. Twenty-plus years of hopeless reliability, monstrous garage bills, endless failures, constant disappointment, vast expense... Was it really that bad? Really? Wow. I'm surely not unique, but I ran a 1 litre Ford Fiesta Popular (petrol) bought from new, for 18 years with NO major problems. (I don't consider wiper blades and lightbulbs to be 'major'.) Even though I'm a mere girlie girl I spent quite a while rallying, so I was happy to do my own servicing at home aided by a Haynes Manual. The car was simple, all-analogue, cheap to run, cheap to fuel, cheap to tax and insure and it never let me down. That's right. Never. It just worked. I appreciate that not everyone wants to work on their car - and Robert's a professional actor-type person with better things to do than crawl under engines and scrape his knuckles - but if he was willing to pay a small fortune to keep his ICE cars running, perhaps that's why the outrageous cost of EV ownership wasn't the shock it is to us lesser mortals. When the UK weather (i.e. salty roads) finally took their toll of the Fiesta's underbody and suspension mounts and the only way out was to be a massive (local garage) welding odyssey, I sold it for parts and got a cheap (£2,000) third-hand Nissan Micra instead. I ran it for 9 years. Same basic setup as the Fiesta: again, no gadgets or gimmicks like central locking, but it did have fuel-injection. Again, I did my own maintenance and servicing. The only time it let me down was one winter when its sealed 'maintenance-free' 12v battery died without warning. (The old Fiesta battery could be checked and topped-up as necessary, so you could monitor its state of health.) Of course EVs are less 'involving', but I find it hard to believe that they represent such a gigantic leap forward in terms of the ordinary Joe (or Jill!) being able to keep a car on the road on a tiny budget. Unlike Robert's, my driving days were rather enjoyable. I think I'd find the lack of scope for under-bonnet tinkering with an EV rather depressing - especially when things went wrong. I like to be involved. In fact, I like to be in charge. But with an EV, it seems that nothing's accessible; nothing's simple; everything's encrypted or electronic or sealed or requires special tools or specialised knowledge... (Serious question: are there Haynes Manuals for EVs? Can you do any significant work on your Tesla to save money?) Oh, and please don't try to persuade me that things NEVER go wrong with EVs. I don't buy that "My Apple i-Pad is perfect, just like my EV, which is utterly perfect and CANNOT go wrong" stuff.

My leaf 24kwh developed an electrical fault where it seemed full of gremlins, it wouldn’t switch on and then everything on the dash was flashing and going crazy when it did switch on . Then it wouldn’t switch off . 🙄. Problem is now all fixed and has never returned again . New windscreen . ✅

7.14 minutes, the £12,000, plus labour costs, for the new battery pack also includes the fees to transport to the disposal place and the fees for the disposal.

Mmm, maybe you ought to watch the KZbin video posted on the James & Kate channel. They had their 10 year old Nissan Leaf battery refurbished at Cleveleys Electric Vehicles in Gloucestershire. The job took 4 hours, and the cost was £600. Full battery replacement isn't always necessary. And any old EV battery would have considerable scrap value. The lithium and cobalt can be 90% recovered and reused in new batteries. Circular economy... Old EV batteries are rarely "disposed" of Stephen. There is a huge arena in Holland, powered by over 200 old Nissan Leaf batteries.....charged via solar.

@@Brian-om2hh I am glad you said that. I forget my post you refer to. The real numbers are extremely important I will go back and look again. I believe that you are right. I think that EV batteries are critical to electric future of the grid. In Australia 20million EV will more than be able to stabilise and power the existing grid. The alternative is massive increase in grid infrastructure and power plants as transport added to the grid load.

Sadly, not so much for the USA and Canada. But I do understand why, as there's an existing certification programs in every state for automobile mechanics and it may not be compatible with HEVRA's own certification. (Every state is different in its requirements.) Hopefully, they will make some inroads in North America.

This is all well and good but a lot of the costs of vehicle repair are labour charges. So stripping a unit down and replacing a 1 euro part may not be the cheapest option.

How amusing. That very part you have on display, except for my Kia Soul, my local dealer has ordered for replacement under warranty. The whole thing, like you said. Because it’s making a noise, worse when the weather is cold. Did I mention that because of that absolutely beautiful 8-year 160,000km warranty it’s not going to cost me $10,000 CDN (plus labour and taxes)? I will be upgrading before the warranty expires in 2023. Hopefully in 8-10 years private EV mechanics like this fellow will be as ubiquitous as the current lot of ICE mechanics.

Interesting that while auto manufacturers are touting recycling & longevity, they are in some instances, equally happy to make repair so expensive, that their EVs are or have been, throw away vehicles. So it is refreshing to learn, that independent technicians are developing cheaper and more environmentally friendly means of repair. I hope that auto manufacturers won’t make it somehow illegal to repair such vehicles.

I'd like to learn about electric vehicles, I can't afford to go into full time education so I'd like to do something like an evening course or a couple of days a week but I'm finding it difficult to find somewhere to learn, is there any way I can find this information as I would like to get involved in the electric vehicle movement in the future

Some forty years ago our induction hob - one of the first - suddenly stopped working. The “engineer” from the manufacturer came round, checked it over and said it was unrepairable, already out of date and should be replaced. When he’d gone, I thought what’s to lose? Occam’s razor:simplest is often right; found several fuses in the innards, one was open, neighbour had an odd 500ma one in his garage, hob worked until we sold up ten years later. So this built-in obsolescence isn’t new, it’s just business as usual and has to be done away with.

I think just like an Ev the person who has the most mental smartness is the most paid person in the room a conventional car uses so many mechanics to move wear and tear makes the car last less longer than the car that is smart that has more computer technology.👍🏿🤓

As a former mechanic and a now Electromechanical repair tech, I have been railing against new designs in EV cars. Many times I am at odds with new OEM products because they are designing and building repairability out of their products. They make entire 3 to 5,000 .00 assemblies that you have to replace or just junk the entire product and buy new. That is not sustainable design. If we can replace smaller items it keeps the costs down but a minimum of wire connections and looms is preferable. Wiring harnesses have always been an issue when they age.

Yes you are correct there are a lot less moving parts in the engine, however don’t forget suspension braking systems, these are common to both ICE cars and EV cars. What is very different for ICE cars to EV cars is a great deal more reliance on software control in particular the charging and discharging point of view of the main EV battery. Software as we all know develop unusual problems and you hear about people plug their car into their home charger at 7:00pm in the evening and come out to go to work at 8.00am in the morning the car has filed to charge, so it’s at least a 45min wait until the car is charged enough to drive to work hopefully. In my opinion the EV cars are totally over priced and joe public are paying for the R&D of these cars and the extremely expensive batteries used in EV cars. I would dearly love to switch to zero Co2 emission on my car but EV has so many questions left unanswered and I think I will wait for Hydrogen technology to become more popular. I love driving the Toyota Miria, far better than EV cars.

Please read this I need your help!! In October I am going to have my 4th child, so in total with my wife and I we will have a family of 6. I am thinking about getting the VW T7 PHEV which is a 7 seater. Next year I will upgrade to the ID Buzz 7 seater. Should I go for the T7 for a year or get 2 electric cars and then upgrade to the 7 seater buzz in 2023? I would love to hear your thoughts!!!

You need to show her the KZbin video of Jeremy Clarkson doing a 1/4 mile drag race in a Tesla Model X people carrier, against a 600bhp V10 Audi R8 The Tesla crossed the line first...... Driving Electric did a little test a while back for people who thought like your mum. They put them in a Golf Gti, up against an eGolf. The Gti couldn't keep up in an acceleration test.....

bought a Renault Kangoo EV. It stopped working. Over seven months in the local Renault garage. It's still there. €17,000 repair bill so far and it's still not working. Think carefully about buying a Renault. Don't believe the rubbish about EV reliability.

When it comes down to it!., they can’t fix your car!. Mu Zoe was locked into Renault and they could not code the new part!… I’m out of pocket!. They will not respond or help any further!… Please don’t chase a cheaper deal!… go cheap pay twice!..

'IF' ev makers wanted to or were regulated to then they could easily make Ev's last for 500,00km almost maintenance free. The first million mile battery is in production now by BYD. We just need governments to stop being the useless twats they are and make sure they force car makers to do it from day one instead of making the designed to fail crap cars have been for the last 20+ years.
