I appreciate the feedback. I’m in a similar place, sold an east cape vantage which was sea worthy but a bit big for the flats and now trying to find a better compromise. Easier said than done. I’ve been looking at the 17 hox but like you fear it is a step too far back in terms of size. The -8 hpxv might be a great compromise but hard to fun and affordable one. Looking at some east cape options but not sure where I will land. I have a bay boat so I guess I can get away with a smaller flats boat since they serve different purposes but not sure

I don't know the east cape boats. As far as MBG in my opinion the Redfisher 18 is as versatile as any 18 foot bay boat. And for me, when I decided to go to a bay boat i went much bigger- 22 ft, which no 18 foot boat can compare to. And a lesser brand to keep cost low. Good luck

I recently considered the Vantage, but skiffs are a compromise. The Chittum Islamorada might be the best of both worlds, just too expensive.

noticed the jupiteR lighthouse, worked on the pilings there, yes no music great reel start to finish. maverick should give you a hell of a memo deal w trailer and all . boat is sick, typically the narrower poling boats dont bode as well on big O and such but fresh or salt maverick is fire

I know videos never do the sea state justice but i wish the 1.5-2' waves on the west coast of fl were that calm. Everyone over here doesnt enjoy running their 36 cc's in 3' or or more

Hi, I have 17 feet boat with 90hp, what would be the best time to go offshore? Safely..
@straightouttajupiter4 жыл бұрын
just watch the marine forecast. I only go out when the forecast calls for less than 2 foot seas. Even if boat can handle, i am tired of getting beat up.

How many pounds of trust is the trolling motor and do you have nav lights and if so where I've been trying to find a good place to mine? Love those mavericks

80 lb. Nav lights built in to the hull.

Is that a 54" trolling motor shaft? If so does it still do a good job in chop without coming out of the water?
@straightouttajupiter3 жыл бұрын
yes 54 inch. It comes out of the water in 1-2 foot chop and large boat wakes for sure. I pretty much only use it inshore and on flat calm days offshore
@desperado35513 жыл бұрын
@@straightouttajupiter good to know. I have an 18' Hewes and trying to decide between 54 and 60. My only concern is when I'm in the shallows, how high the head will be above the front deck.

I appreciate the demonstration of ride quality with minimal music. Any complaints or things you would order differently? I've been weighing 115 vs 150 power.
@straightouttajupiter4 жыл бұрын
No complaints. Adequate power with 115. It will fly with 150.

How far can you go off shore in a 18ft boat people say you can't really go that far cus its a small boat

I don't believe there is a limit as long as one takes into account fuel capacity/range and weather conditions.

Why the switch to an hpx-v 17? I’m kind of looking for an 18’ flats boat.
@straightouttajupiter3 жыл бұрын
Thought 17 might provide similar function, but more efficient, easier to maintain, etc. I liked the 18 much better. 17 is a good boat don't get me wrong. I'm gonna post a review soon
@straightouttajupiter3 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna put 17 up for sale soon. Main reason - I don't pole anymore. Great boat. Ordered a new redfisher 16. Should do all I want it to do. I don't need a technical poling skiff that I don't pole.
@Oakleyshooter3 жыл бұрын
@@straightouttajupiter So going down a size again because you DONT pole? I don't plan to pole or pole much but I still like the thought of an 18' RF or Maverick for the extra room and design.
@straightouttajupiter3 жыл бұрын
Actually the 16 red is pretty much the same length as the 17 mav but almost a foot wider and heavier and more stable. Since I don't plan on poling anymore I prefer the red. If you don't pole, consider the redfisher 18 for the same reason. It's also cheaper than mav 18.
@dirkdiggler25864 жыл бұрын
Curious what shaft length are you using on your trolling motor. I see you are not always using in calm water so I figured you would have good insight in that area . Thanks
@straightouttajupiter4 жыл бұрын
60 inch shaft. Plenty long. Thrust is 80. I'm gonna switch to 120 someday cuz 80 not enough in string current
@tombrown75773 жыл бұрын
Why is it you never see a jackplate on Mavericks?
@straightouttajupiter3 жыл бұрын
good question. it would help in very shallow water. not sure why (or if) it's uncommon
@davide31295 ай бұрын
Doesn’t seem like you respond to a lot of comments but if you do, I would be interested in understanding the rationale of all the different boats you’ve had and the struggles in finding the right boat. I would say perfect boat but no such thing. The 18 hpx would be a highly versatile boat for what you do but then you traded down to a 17, a different boat vs the 18 and too small for the versatility you need. Then a red fisher and now a bay boat. You are all over the place lol
@straightouttajupiter5 ай бұрын
Hey i always answer. Just not when people ask where I'm fishing. That's not fair to other fisherman. The 18 maverick was a great boat. At the time I was poling and I thought the 17 would be easier. But I didn't like it. Too small. Waves crashed over the gun whale while spot locked in the inlet. When i stopped poling, I went with the redfisher 16. I needed a boat that would fit in my garage and the RF 16 fit the bill and was much more stable than the mav 17. When I moved to a new place with no hoa, and no need to garage the boat,I decided to get something bigger. I would have loved the RF 18 but the cost skyrocketed. So I went the bulls bay. 22 ft for even trade on my RF 16. Hope this helps.
