What is the best tool to use to cut the 2x4? I have a mitre saw and table saw, both that make angle cuts, but getting the cut depth exact is a challenge. Is there a video to show how you made the actual cuts?

In this video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGmxZqaCeaiWd7M , I used a circular saw to cut most of the double rabbet joint, and then detailed the cut with a jig saw.

Since you said the joints are mirror images can you just make 1 and flip it to fit the other side? Yes

That's exactly what I did. I made two templates so I could test fit the double rabbet joint angles and it worked well. Also, I would test fit the first couple of wood sides that you cut, just to make sure you are sawing correctly.

How abou the size of the base boar on 2x4

If your 2x4 is the same WIDTH as the 1x4 described in this video, the rabbit joint dimensions are the same.
