I remember these. My science instincts tell me that you could get a _lot_ more speed out of the design if the spinning weight was reoriented in a way where the axis of rotation ran left-right, spinning clockwise when viewed from it's right side. The key would be matching the RPM of the weight to the resonant frequency of the legs. As the weight rises in the back, it would cause the bug to move towards the ground, getting a good grip on the floor to store potential energy in the legs as the weight advances forward. Then, as the weight lowers in the front, the legs would kinda kick off of the ground and give a bit of forward thrust, which would be helped by the weight moving towards the back at the bottom.

I remember the first ones and it was the first one I had. Started as a little cheap toy in RadioShack as a plastic case with 6 legs that propelled it and when it bumped into something the antenna's on it's head could contact little bars inside of them telling it to back up and rotate 90 degrees and walk again. Then came the Hex Ants and the Hex Inchworm and the Hex Crab then the Larva then the Nano then now I think they have a fish.

There are actually many different kinds of hexbugs. There's remote control spider ones, there's these ant ones that basically just run around on wheels, there's this crab one that moves when it hears loud noise/senses light, and probably more. For some reason, though, they ONLY advertise these tiny vibrator ones. The only reason I even know these other ones exist is because I saw a few in Radio Shack.

They're called "hexbugs" because of the originals. The original hexbugs had six legs, but these are "nanos". Each toy in the hexbug line is modeled after an insect. But more in function then shape. The nano's most likely being like roaches, because they run fast and are tiny. Thus, to keep with the "six" theme, they made the track hexagon shaped. Also, the entire hexbugs series became hexagon themed after the originals.
