Honestly, this show would not have been nearly as good without Helga. She is far and away the absolute best thing about this show. I have the entire DVD box set of this show, and every single episode that heavily features her are all my favorite ones. I remember originally hating her guts, but when the Christmas Special finally aired it changed my entire perspective.The special literally made me break down into tears, how can a mere cartoon move you to feel such things? Helga found a way. I've always been so jealous of Arnold knowing an amazing girl like Helga was so completely obsessed with him. Yes she was more or less the main bully for everyone in school, and was the Big Bad Helga, but shes just so compelling as a character, so sympathetic despite her crude and cruel behavior. Shes a 9 year old with the mental and emotional age of a girl whos like 19. Shes also very brilliant academically but this aspect is rarely showcased in the show, instead that glory is always given to Olga and Phoebe. Long story short, I would love being with a girl like Helga and Hey Arnold is in my top 3 All Time list of cartoons first and foremost because of Helga G Patakiy.

TherealRNO I don’t think Angelica counts. Angelica might have some hidden good, but a jerk with a heart of gold is different from a tsundere. Tsundere are characters that actually really like and want the attention of the people they treat poorly, the “really like” almost always being romantic (some people even use the term strictly when romantic feelings are involved).

I normally hate the whole "they're mean because they have a crush on you." Thing. Being awful to someone your attracted to or giving someone a chance romantically if that's how they treat you is not something to be encouraged, especially at a young age. However it works here because A.) Its portrayed at as character flaw in Helga and a really fascinating one to explore and B.) She is pushing him away. Arnold is attracted to generally kind people and its heavily hinted at that he might someday give her a chance but only if she changes.
@Hakajin7 жыл бұрын
What I think it interesting is how much conflict Helga herself experiences over her behavior. She wants to be more honest with Arnold, but she feels so vulnerable and is so afraid of rejection that she can't bring herself to do it. She still wants his attention, though, so... It's actually kind of painful to watch. The really brilliant thing is that, while the show doesn't condone Helga's behavior, it doesn't really judge her for it, either; you're definitely meant to still sympathize with her.
@thinbulb88327 жыл бұрын
actually it isnt promoting it per say she doesnt want to be mean to him its just her instinct because she was bullied at preschool for liking him so she thinks that if she shows affection for him again they will bully her again so she hides her love for him hy being mean! get it?

Helga is the most complex cartoon character of the 90's! Her family is a mess: an alcoholic as a mother, an over-achieving sister, a father who only loves one child (Olga) over another. To be born into such a family would be a nightmare. Arnold was probably the first person to ever pay her any attention. As a child, I was drawn in by her crazy behaviour. As an adult, I don't think she anywhere close to crazy. Helga is just a person with too many walls surrounding her. To be honest, I am totaly in love with her character ❤. As much as i love Helga as a character, i don't think she should simply be able to walk away from all that she has done to him. after the Hey arnold the jungle movie, now that they are a couple, if they make a season 6, i think it would be really interesting if her past behaviour comes back to haunt her. we never really see if Arnold really forgives Helga for acting this way and if whether the rest of their friends will accept their relationship due to what she put him through. needless to say, although we can empathize with her for having been forced to act this way due to her upbringing and fear of what others might think, she still choose to act this way and in no way should this be condoned, much less allowed to fall through the cracks and be forgotten. Although everyone knows that both Arnold and Helga are meant for each other, i would like the creators to focus on Helga by having her questions if she is really good for him.
@halleyangel17066 жыл бұрын
While that's interesting. I dont think all the stuff Helga did is really all that bad. I mean yea it's a bit creepy. And she can be a ass to alot of people especially Arnold. But if anyone else knew of her life at home. Especially if Arnold knew after the Jungle Movie, would see how that home life would affect how she acts. For that I think Arnold, being who he is, would forgive Helga for how she deals with her issues. I mean to have a family like that, from personal experiences. It can really screw you up. Not as major as say someone with PTSD, but having the mindset that your not good enough than another person. Not having a good female role model figure (Helga's mom) would really screw her up. Plus it's not like Helga ever did what Iggy did to Arnold in Arnold betrays Iggy. I cant really name a moment she ever did anything too far like that.

@Malaysha Morgan: In terms of concept, yes. In terms of Nicktoons? Says you. "New Kid in Town", "Moving Away" & "Rugrats in Paris" show otherwise. Plus, Paul Germain said himself: *Chuckie and Angelica were the two most important emotional characters in the series, the two extremes, polar opposites. Obviously, Tommy, Phil, Lil, Didi, Stu, Grandpa, etc. were all crucial characters - and there could be no show without Tommy, our protagonist - but Chuckie and Angelica drove the series. (Interestingly, though, neither one of them appeared in the pilot.) Chuckie and Angelica were such strong characters, that we could easily build an episode around either of them individually, and we often did - but the sparks would really fly when a story revolved around both of them together. Check out the episode “Cuffed,” for an example.* Hence C/A ship tease in the comics (too many moments to list), the stage play (the two share a small kiss in it) & select series episodes ("Driving Miss Angelica", "Chuckie's Red Hair", "Angelica's Last Stand", "Uneasy Rider", "Cuffed", "Chuckerfly", "Angelica's Twin", "Art Fair", "Who's Taffy", "Curse of the Werewuff", etc. for the original series & "Project Chuckie", "You-Gotta-Go" & "Petition This" from AGU).

This cartoons is one of those animes where popular girls hate and love the main boys. What an inspiring masterpiece. I just wish they could make something like these the other way around, because I’m pretty much sick and tired of guys getting tortured by ladies.

But (aside from becoming "It Girl" briefly), Helga was not popular. She was just the resident "tough girl" bully. But that was just a public facade, as she was sweet & tender-hearted deep down, as shown by her lamenting monologues.

As I understand the Tsundere trope...they aren't usually *this* over-the-top (hell, this is more "pole-vaulting-over-the-moon"). I never really found this whole spiel charming; it was just *dumb*. The fact that eventually it derailed the show into essentially a 4th grade soap opera didn't help.

Helga is actually a pretty tame tsundere in comparison to what you can find in anime, the media from which the term orginates. It's supposed to be seen as slapstick, but anime tsundere are known to beat the shit out of their love interests and in some cases (The Familiar of Zero), the intended slapstick comes off more as genuine abuse.

til this day i still don't understand why Shortaki became Canon
@TherealRNOwwfpooh4 ай бұрын
Shortaki (Arnold Shortman X Helga Pataki), like Millhouse Van Houten X Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons, is based on Craig Batlett's own marriage to his wife, Lisa Greoning-Bartlett, that's why. In-universe, however, Arnold X Helga share parallels with Arnold's grandparents ("Steely" Phil [or as "Pookie" called him "Chin Boy" due to his bulbous chin] & "Pookie" Gertie [short for Gertrude]) and Coach Wittenberg's marriage to his catty wife Tish.

She's probably mean because her parents usually ignore her she may be insecure ad hides her love feelings by acting like she hates Arnold.

Mean on the outside. Sweet on the inside. Per the Rugrats comics, per select episodes of the original show, per the way her parents behave (no different than Helga/Arnold being forshadowed by how Arnold's grandparents acted when young), and per Craig Bartlett's influence as asisstant writer (both girls are tsundere bullies with blond pigtails who are raised by ineffective parenting methods), it actually suggested that--perhaps--Angelica likes Chuckie in a similar manner.

Personally I think Drew and Charlotte are much better parents to Angelica then Bob and Miriam are to Helga. Drew and Charlotte are career driven individuals and tend to spoil Angelica with material possessions, but they are still emotionally supportive and loving to her and are overall healthy adult role models for her. Bob and Miriam seem to have some built in unhealthy even toxic traits in them that make them damaging to Helga and even Olga and are not emotionally available to either of them. Olga said it her self, she knows she had to put on a performance if excellence to get her parents attention and affection. She may be the golden child but if she did anything to significantly break that image of perfection I think she would lose All of that. Helga could never measure up so she is treated to these dismissive comments and judgement by her parents. They are always comparing her to Olga.

@@Passions5555 Well, for the Olga & Lila parallels, I see Susie Carmichael in that spot, for obvious reasons. Same for Chuckie's adopted sister Kimi in the role for Angelica that "Pheebs" (Phoebe Heyerdahl) provides for Helga, per the debut of Kimi (and her mother Kira) in the original series proper via the episode _Finsterella_ (spoofing the classic _Cinderella_ fairytale, just with a gender inversion, since Chuckie's in the titular maid-to-Princess' role, with Kimi mirroring Angelica's behavior as the story's Stepsisters, which is fitting, since prior to getting formally adopted, Kimi & Chuckie are stepsiblings canonically) & directly shown in season 7 mini-sode _Piece of Cake_ within Angelica's dream (of course, the moment was likely meant to be a sendup to _Hey Arnold_ created by Angelica's co-creator Craig Bartlett, since Craig Bartlett did create Angelica Pickles with Paul Germain in the same way his wife Lisa Groening-Bartlett helped him create Helga Pataki).
