Jimi had the lead chops for days. They were raw and powerful. His vibrato was unmatched and totally unique but it was his melodic chord work and songwriting that pushed him to the top for me......and he's still there.

He doesn't mention it specifically but that moment in 'A Film About Jimi Hendrix' where it cuts to that bit in Machine Gun and he's just standing there.....and there's that tremelo arm. It's jawdropping!! Even now. For ONCE, the camera was rolling. Imagine what else never got captured!!

Joe captures the essence of Jimi's beauty in his words and admiration. Jimi was so far ahead (and still is) of him time. Joe made this real in stating that "imagine this coming over the radio in your car" .... great stuff ... Jimi makes you believe that life is so vast and great .... thank God that Jimi was made by this great experiment of ours.

I’ll admit, at first I was skeptical but now I know I could talk to Joe about Hendrix all day long. I met a guy here in Guitar Center Austin that’s friends with Eric Johnson and we talked about Hendrix for like an hour. Hendrix is like the unifying force for guitar players. These guys did a whole Hendrix tribute tour. He gets it.

Joe picked the 3 that I would pick, but I would say Third stone from the sun, Spanish Castle Magic and Red House could easily come a close second. Jimi was so creative and inspiring and that is why even 50 plus years later his playing is still inspiring and his music is still being played by guitarist.

Technically Jimi was not the so called "greatest" guitar player but musically he was and ever will be......... like Jan Akkerman said about Hendrix : he needed just three notes to fill up the room and tell his story and like Santana said , these notes came right out of his soul!! Jimi was the big game changer , the biggest anyway , Alan Holdsworth was technically way better but Jimi could talk with his guitar and express everything with it , no one will ever duplicate that , we as guitarplayers may thank God for Jimi Hendrix and what he achieved in just 4 short years !!!!

@KingKull1971
@KingKull1971 3 жыл бұрын
I actually don't agree with you, Alan Holdsworth wasn't a better guitarist than Hendrix by a long shot. He was just different. People seem to think the more notes you can cram into a song the better you are, and that's just not so. Holdsworth doesn't have the songs, Jimi does. Good song writing makes the total package. Holdsworth had the chops, but he appealed to a nichè market. Jim Hendrix on the other hand....Nuff Said.

To all the young guitarists out there, 2 things you need to educate yourself on.. 1) Hendrix 2) Joe Satriani's musical knowledge. You will go a long long way listening to & learning from this man. He is the technique & theory king & his improvising is second to none.

I'm off to Seattle on 14 September 2023 specifically to catch up with all things Jimi whilst there including a visit to his mother. Especially, to talk to their soul, tell him what he means to my soul. Two years after I'd originally planned. Hopefully, find some open mic nights to show some inspired transgressions.

Just too much distortion. Guitar is like 10% of it, if that. Guarantee Satch could mimic Jimi's tone with that guitar, which is an extremely versatile instrument in particular. I don't know why he didn't turn down the distortion, just lazy I guess.

Matt H I feel that those few that could maybe create Jimi’s material choose not to. Out from respect & honor, plus a few actually had their own sound before Jimi. Examples - Albert King, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins. I personally have attended live shows of these performers. Clearly Satriani choose not to use a Strat out from decision. I think out from beautiful homage to Jimi Hendrix

I've got it too. It's in a GuitarLegends (A Guitar World special) magazine titled Jimi Live! from sometime in the early 2000's. It's got live versions transcribed of Like a Rolling Stone, Purple Haze, Machine Gun, All Along the Watchtower, and Little Wing. The transcriptions are crazy accurate with little notes under the tab telling you things like exactly how much to use the tremolo arm, tells you the moments he's running his arm over the back of the neck, even what pitch the feedback should be in.
