I like to say that narcissists don’t have a monopoly on narcissism - but don’t tell them that because it might challenge their grandiosity. 😂

I've experienced one person that is an actual narcissist and after that I can sort of tell the difference. I feel like so many people use that word that's it lost it's real meaning.

Same, I worked closely with a narcissist for a couple months and it was like nothing I’ve seen before. The only one I’ve ever met, and believe me, she’d never admit it or wear the diagnosis like a badge of honor like so many do these days.

How many narcissist's does it take to change a light bulb? None, a narcissist will always find someone else to do a menial task like that.

It is really hard to see through the manipulation of others. I do see narcissistic traits that are high on the spectrum mostly with people with addictions and people with learn behaviors. I have also seen people with addiction once they get sober. That unhealthy narcissism is gone. Thanks Sam for keeping things in perspective.

i see it as those with narcissistic style as having their narcissism 'below 50%', but those with pathological narcissism as being basically 100% narcissistic, and not much in between. The healthy narcissism can be managed by the +50% of the ego that is healthy, whilst the pathological is 'overwhelmed' entirely with the disorder.

Great timing for this video:). As we hopefully are spreading the awareness of NPD to help those of us who have been abused by them, the word “Narcissist” is being used very casually and, as you said, for people who do not have a serious disorder but are simply trying to appear confident and or achieve big things, especially in the West. Thank you for pointing this out. From now on, I’m just going to use NPD instead of the word Narcissist😄.

So true i have been there, many years ago, to a point i asked myself, is it me the bad one? I went into consultation, and my psy reassured me. "Don't worry he said, narcissistic man will not ask himself the question." We laught. " you spend to much time in hospital"; into 3 years in a row period, i went over 600 times at the hospital including 34 weeks of hospitaisation for 7 surgeries. So i include 1 day spend at the hospital as one visit. As always, interesting video Prof Vaknin.

Once I accidentally started learning about narcissism I instantly spotted 2 people I know who fit. The one that I was in contact with (the more definitely narcissistic one); I distanced. Then I had a relationship. (Amusingly, with the other possible narcissist's sister.) I realised 2 weeks after leaving that she's one.... except I've just started researching female psychopathy and it might be a more accurate fit. Still have more research to do on that. I also started hanging out with someone a few months ago and then distanced myself once I'd spotted too many narcissistic _traits_ for comfort. While having a discussion with a guy I know about my ex, he mentioned he's a narcissist, and, having erroneously brushed off as self-deprecation the time when a sociopath told me he's a sociopath in the past, I'm inclined to believe that guy when he says he's a narcissist. I _think_ that's all the narcissists (subclinical and clinical levels of traits) that I'm aware of having encountered, though I've encountered a couple more psychopaths. I live on the edge of society and there's a lot of those types around the edges. I try to be rational about this stuff. I'm not labelling someone a narcissist unless I see _clear_ or abundant signs. Edit to add: Oh, I forgot one person I only briefly interacted with at a party who later got herself kicked out for getting at it with some random guy on the party dude's late Mum's bed who was showing clear signs of something in that cluster, hinting towards narcissism. As they were being kicked out she claimed "we were only kissing". Well, they certainly weren't kissing using their _mouths_ that's for sure. There were other signs too.

There seems to be narcissism the kind of natural state a person can fall into. And also NPD the techne, like a craft of tactics that abusers use that have been crafted like a techne. I come to this theory noticing that others also notice a type of copy cat, copy past list of tactics they use, like a techne that has been developed. Some of these tactics seem to entail the person has really high intelligence but with many they clearly do not, they did not developed that techne, they learned it, someone else developed it and passed it on just like trade craft. I theories the field of psychology itself produced it. Either through immoral practitioner or through evil intelligent patients that took the knowledge they gained and employed them negatively. The knowledge is like fire. Once it got out, it got used for bad and was refined by the culture. That is my first impression of experiencing this behavior without knowledge of it. This person is trying to abuse me, and it's with their knowledge of psychology.

I'm still a bit confused, since the actual rate for NPD is that low, then how does one explain the high amounts of experience with this type of abuse? I have experienced and witnessed these patterns with quite a few individuals in my life and yet they may not be able to be diagnosed with NPD nor BPD. Is it possible for this to be learned behavior passed through families? Maybe I need to listen to this a few more times to understand...

Point well taken..I then have had the rare experience of my ex partner clearly NPD and her child’s father clearly NPD. When I say clearly they exhibit extreme traits of splitting..grandiosity..spatial and language distortions..idealization devaluation discard in every prior relationship. I feel very grateful to be out of this dark power couples dynamic where he always maintains a position as secondary supply while she revolves through primary supply targets myself being the most recent. I recently saw her partner who had in the past been pleasant and accommodating..shape shift into becoming threatening to me..post break up with his child’s mother..in what literally looked like demonic possession. He kind of cracked his neck and it seemed like in an adrenaline rush devolved in front of my eyes. He looked..felt evil. He literally lost all language function and then when he was able to speak it wasn’t even his voice. My body had the primal response of happening upon a wild predator in the woods where your blood goes cold. The only thing It reminded me of was Will Smith movie “I am Legend” about devolved Zombies who did so through extreme levels of adrenaline where the alpha zombie literally did the same neck crack. Bizarre how Will Smith with his assault of Chris Rock seemingly was invoked by his wife Jada with a “look”…a cue..and she seems to have been “bitten by” the same NPD bug as well. It feels like there is definitely a mythological/archetypical component in all this. Be it a vampire..witch.. or straight up demon possession. The way NOD’s “conjure” up their paracosm. I’m saying all of this to just make the counter point to the 1% to 2% number from the DSM. It is an essential discernment that you make and is why you are the most respected voice in the field. And/but also personality disorders aren’t static they are produced in large part.. by environmental conditions. They have been possibly seeded in the our history reflected in myths and In our current military industrial techno capitalistic milieu might being rebirthed as cluster b disorders by our failing to support basic attachment needs. Clearly with Trump being elected in a landslide victory that seed is taking fruit. Originally Christ described the 9 fruits of the Spirit.. humility..patience..etc. Are we witnessing the 9 fruits of the dispirited.? Again my point is it feels as if it’s growing is all. Thank you for you always deeply wise words. Every video open my eyes wider and my vision deeper. Please keep them coming 🙏👹

You can do the same thing with very positive personality traits among the general population. And also among narcissist their is strong differences between individual and some happen to possess very positive traits. Don't make your self any illusion, narcissist are hard very hard to deal with. Don't think you can control a real narcissist you can only help the few among them that decide by themselves and for themselves to seek therapy. Some narcissist are genius, some are self aware and possess a very advanced form of moral logic. Just as us "normal people" some are exceptional in all the way a human can be exceptional. Don't take that for hope, most narcissist won't change, their are incredible exception that being said.
