His earlier movies were no fluke. He was one of the best directors during one of the best times for films. Scotts downfall isnt that hes always been a fraud. Its that he didnt know when to retire. If you go on for too long, not only do you change beyond recognition the industry does as well. He is simply to old, weak and lacking in passion and the industry is too dumb, cultish and lacking in passion. Alien and Blade Runner were not flukes. They were the products of a man in his prime working in an industry in its prime.

In fact, that was one of Rome's problems. They trained barbarians to eventually be conquered by them. In scott's defense, Rome was extremely diversed and multicultural, they would bring slaves and rich tradesman from all parts of Asia, Europe and Africa, blck people were fairly common in the empire, not only as slaves but also as merchants and dealers

Yup, I was fortunate enough to visit it twice when I lived in Germany and travelled Italy. So amazing and it was back when I could still climb up the tower of Pisa and were able to go down into the cells beneath the amphitheatre
