This is so cool. I just saw this campaign recently, as I was like "this guy looks familiar". I did some digging, and it turns out I saw Boyan's TED talk in school when I was 12, talking about putting floating nets in ocean gyres to collect, recycle, and sell plastics collected there. Now, 9 years later, I get to see where this whole thing ended up. Nice to see he never stopped working on it! :D

My concern is that after all this Clean up, the local municipalities might dispose off the waste improperly resulting in a certain percentage of the waste back into the rivers. It's a great initiative, I fully support it but it's important that we ensure the loop is complete with proper end disposal of garbage thus ensuring that it does not return to the ocean.

I believe people would be more aware about this issue and will at least acknowledge how their day-to-day behaviour is a part of the problem. Team seas made it to tv stations, almost all across the youtube platform, and etc. Although, we absolutely cannot expect these poorer communities to change as they have no other options given to them. Just ask them, do they want to live in garbage piles? Of course not. Anyways, I'm going on a ramble here but I thank you for letting me have an excuse to share my 2 cents. Cheers!

Hey team, the design has an escape route for fish but not the floating vegetation, which is being included in your measurements as trash. I wonder if that's something that could be improved upon? Looks very effective at removing pollution but perhaps also effective at removing plants and maybe that needs an ecologist to measure the significance and keep an eye on to ensure the local living ecosystem isn't collateral damage in this brilliant idea. Amazing overall, well done!

@@zaneh6224 what? Ban single use plastics specifically in POOR communities? You're basically telling them to stop surviving. Please consider that they do not have the privilege that most of us here have. Instead of telling them to stop consuming what they can only afford, the RICH producers should be the one to stop being irresponsible in the production. The poor are not the problem, they're victims too. If the rich stop hogging all the resources and the people of power do something about these communities, most of the problems will be resolved.

Now these places just need local garbage collection service to prevent it from going into the rivers in the first place. A few hours once a week where the local citizens collecting trash and place it in dumpsters placed in neighborhoods could make the entire country cleaner and healthier for the locals and drastically cut down on the amount of trash in the rivers as well.
@sorryifoldcomment8596

Yeah the #1 goal of every country should have a trash system, like in the U.S. That's a must have, should be a primary goal to implement a system like the one here in every city. I definitely take all the dumpsters and trash cans in my area for granted. There are 6 giant dumpsters and 6 recycling dumpsters just in my apartment complex. With instructions on what can be recycled, etc. There are also trash cans along the streets, in public parks, freaking everywhere! Every house has their own trash can & recycling bin. I can't imagine what I'd do without them. Or what I'd do if the city didn't come by and empty them once a week. Cuz that shit gets full.

The bigger picture is "What can be done to produce a self sustainable waste management solution in the poor communities?" Surely the waste can be sorted and used individually. Paper, and cardboard can be burned to produce energy. Plastic can be ground and extruded into shapes such as roof and road tiles. Metal can be cast and cut into machine parts. Food waste can be composted to enrich the soil. So the bigger questions are: Where does the catalysis money come from to build the programs and factories? and How to get enough energy to melt the plastics and metals? One solution is to start the separation process, and use the food waste to produce compost, which in turn produces food, and more compost. The compost can also be sold. This will provide more money to community in order to fire off the plastic and metal factory solutions.

I'm not sure if you read these comments, but I've been tinkering with an idea for a while, for a different aspect of _improving_ the plastic situation. Maybe just a pipe dream, but if you would humor me a sliver of your time to read it, maybe some of it could gain traction in the right hands: Current state of plastics is that the vast majority of it ends up as general trash, because incredibly difficult and resource intensive sorting, very low rate of intercompatibility, and very extensive use of thermoset plastics. So here's my idea: Get industries together under an umbrella organization, and give them government sticks and carrots incentives - and develop a new set of standardized plastics. Or more specifically, a few "sets" of intercompatible thermoplastics. Branded clearly on the products for human sorting (the current markings have been so messed up over tve years, they do not really aid much in that effort these days), but Ideally also optically identifiable by machines. Use some kind of inert tracer material unique to each thermoplastic "set", that will rapidly react when exposed to some kind or radiation wave length, in a way percieveable to sensors. This way both human (consumers) and industrial waste treatment machines can sort and separate waste plastics into these few, easily managable sets of intercompatible thermoplastics, that can then be cleaned, and melted down through a predictable process and yield a reasonably predictable thermoplastic blend - and thus be reused to make new products. The end product from that might have some slightly inferior characteristics compared to virgin and single-type-and-source recycled thermoplastics, but there's plenty of products made where that isn't really an issue. If we tune these intercompatible thermoplastics well, with these ambitions in mind, that blended recycled thermoplastic _could _*_in theory_* continue on in that Phoenix-with-memory lifecycle indefinitely, as long as the formerly mentioned tracer is kept detectable so that contamination is kept minimal. I suggest a few sets of intercompatible thermoplastics, because there would be significant characteristics limitations to the range of properties achieveable for each thermoplastic, while retaining that intercompatibility. One range could be great start, but if we _really_ want wide industry adoptation, then a much wider span of material properties need to be attainable. Which I don't think is doable without at least 2-3 different "sets" of those ranges. It can't be drastically more than that though, or both the comsumer/human and industrial separation would get far too complex and costly. We need to keep this "system" attractive, including in operational cost, to reach that initial seed that puts enough of these thermoplastics in circulation to make the recycling stage attractive. If we can get to that point, this "arrangement" can go with minimal govt incentives as it approaches self-sustainability. I believe that this "system", once it reaches that _relatively (!)_ early stage critical mass, would become self-accellerating. I do believe it's important to abide by KISS in this one, and not get too greedy or absolutist, or it would be orders of magnitude more difficult to gain early traction and adoption. In that case, we wouldn't achieve anything more than a new process route, back to the same landfills and rivers. And possibly burn some important bridges in the process. I do recognize the ultimate ambition of doing away with _all_ plastics, at least those not easily compostable. But as with climate change, we need a very wide array of different prongs and tools as we work towards better sustainability. We'll never get there in reasonable time (or at all) without fairly extensive intermediary and iterative solutions, many if not _most_ of them quite short of ideal, but each moving us closer. There doesn't currently exist any optimal one-size-fits-all solutions, for these kinds of truly gigantic undertakings, ideal or otherwise. Thank you for your time.

Have you guys got stats on stuff like, most caught by a single interceptor in a single day? or even how much the interceptors collectively have caught in total? Even if it's not in 'weight' but dumpster loads?

This is great and i think you could have even more impact if you also tow some of those containers to the communities upriver so they could throw their trash directly in the container.

Is it just me or do I miss transparity on where the waste is going to after catching it? In many countries landfills are still common. That is a pretty shitty alternitive as well as it will eventually pollut ground water...

Check out the website and Mark also explains this in his video. They separate the trash they collect and break it down into reusable plastic. I’m not an expert so for the details look at the website and Mark’s video

Amazing initiative, all for it...But I'll say what many are thinking but not saying...Help the crisis more "upstream" by building infrastructure for the communities impacted to properly dispose of waste, and not around their homes, playgrounds, businesses...How the governments of these locations can't provide proper waste treatment is mind blowing --- Kudos to all involved with the cleanup, I've already donated...And separately donated to The Ocean Cleanup, the cool sunglasses made from recycled material is just a bonus :)

How about putting the large dumpster they put all the river trash (and plants) in the slum first and just collect it directly. that has to be 10x less energy waste.

You hit the nail on the head. Paying third world countries incentives to collect their rubbish is the fastest way to a clean ocean, or corruption... one of the two A large river catchment is vast, and might need 100000 dumpsters, or one intercepter

I’m curious where the interceptor trash is taken. Is it actually more efficient economically to use the interceptor rather than helping build on land waste management infrastructure? While less trash is entering the ocean, people still have to live with it in their communities.

Exactly, isnt better to help this people ? I cried cuz they live in literal mountains of trash, no one deseerve that life, even if poor, not being sorround by trash should be a basic need
