Dude, you are hilarious. My jaw dropped when the sparks were flying. With 40T up front and the 11 tooth gear unlocked, you'd be doing 40 mph, Holy shit. I wonder if we can fit an extra cell inside the stock battery and have a 4p14s battery or if we'd have to drop back to 3p14s and lose capacity. If you gained 3 mph from the additional 3.7 volts, you would get to 34 mph on 60 volts with stock gears, but that would really be pushing the poor thing far, but it's got a thermal over load sensor so maybe you'd be safe. 3p16s would definitely fit. Maybe I should try it. I live in MN and winter is great for cooling :)

If I start out in the 13 tooth gear, the bike does not like it. The chain/gears make terrible noises... Once I'm rolling 10 mph or so, the bike doesn't care that the angle is bad. Must not be enough torque at that point to cause an issue. With all the urban riding I do and the lack of insane hills in Minnesota, I think a 38T or 40T is the way to go. You can have a nice straight chain line and be able to get up to 25 mph before you decide to switch gears for more speed. I've been doing a lot of stair cases and other urban obstacles around the downtown area, kind of fun just running wild. I have to remind myself that I can't go through red lights anymore when I get back into my car.

This is perfect, thanks so much for taking the time to make this - as I plan to make a 52V pack for my Frey M600 later this week from 21700 cells (Frey was nice enough to agree to send me the battery case empty so I could build my own), and I was wondering if it was safe to do so. You also really got me with the sparks, at which point I thought you had definitely answered my question! Glad I kept watching!

The bike came stock with the 11 tooth "disabled" because it would skip. I've since moved to Shimano's Microspline system, so I never investigated why it skipped though I did try adjusting the derailleur. I suspect getting a longer chain might have fixed the problem.

Thanks for the video! which do you prefer the X-1 or AM1000?
@JustEnjoyingLife73

That is a difficult question to answer, however knowing what I know now and since I mainly ride trails, I'd probably pick the X1 because it's lighter. But if I were to ride on the road, I would prefer the AM1000 for its larger battery and higher speed.

I love Luna & their products. I'm a Luna devotee for their quality & service. That said, I don't think they'll cover setting off explosives near their bikes :) BTW I have 2 Luna kits. A BBS02 & a Ludicrous BBSHD. I'd think, with a 42t chain ring, your top speed could be higher as I can exceed 30 mph on flats with the BBS02 on a very upright POS steel frame.

Being that adding a 2nd battery to carry along for longer trips is a good thing (and that range on the X-1 isn't ideal using PAS3), what's your thoughts on carrying a 52V battery with more capacity than the stock X-1 battery and adding a plug so that you can just plug it in when needed? What 52V battery would you advise, from where and how much $$? If just jumpered in, will the stock battery indicator read it or will it require an additional battery gauge as shown in your video?
@JustEnjoyingLife73
@JustEnjoyingLife73 4 жыл бұрын
Carrying a second battery is a good idea if you need the range. You'd have to come up with a way to disconnect the stock battery. For example, you could have a set of connectors accessible from the outside so that you can disconnect the stock power source and plug in your battery. Any of Luna Cycle's 52V batteries would work. You'd just have to decide how much range you want. The stock battery indicator will not read the capacity correctly since it's setup for a 48V battery. Some of Luna's batteries have a built-in volt meter. Have you considered just buying an extra 48V X-1 battery, or did you want to try 52V?
@johnoaklay4694
@johnoaklay4694 4 жыл бұрын
@@JustEnjoyingLife73 The Luna X-1 battery is $520. I know that less expensive 52V batteries with more capacity can be found elsewhere but no, they won't fit in the same place as the stock one does so I'd have to come up with a way to carry either battery.

Yes, I've tried a 42T, but a 40T might be a safer size to prevent the possibility of the chainring coming into contact with the chainstay.

Use a hub motor...mid drive has to many turning wheels in it...and you can not cycle without resitance....etc etc
@JustEnjoyingLife73
@JustEnjoyingLife73 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, a mid drive does not offer any resistance to pedaling. Direct drive hub motors can add resistance to pedaling if they're not running. A hub motor of equivalent power won't offer enough torque for off-road use because it can't take advantage of the gears on your bike, and a hub motor of comparable capability is much, much heavier (the bike would weigh over 100 lbs), and the motor is unsprung weight, which is not ideal for uneven terrain where the suspension is traveling quite a bit at a rapid rate. Hub motors have their place, but for this type of use, a mid drive is ideal. That's why you see them on bikes like the Specialized Levo and Giant Full E, where low weight and high torque is a priority. Also, I don't know of an easy way to adapt a torque-sensing bottom bracket to a hub motor, so if anyone knows how, I'd love to learn about it.
@michaelsprinzeles4022
@michaelsprinzeles4022 4 жыл бұрын
Huh? Hubs come in 2 types, geared & direct drive, and neither is suited for serious off road riding. Geared hubs have many moving parts inside like a mid-drive. Also like a mid-drive the geared hub offers no resistance when not using power. The direct drive hub is the simplest with no moving gears just magnets so it is very reliable but has no torque for hill climbing (unless you go 3 KW or higher). The direct drive hub motor unlike a geared hub or mid-drive does offer resistance when not powered. I fail to see why unsprung weight and lack of hill climbing torque would be desirable but to each their own. For fairly flat commuting strictly on road I could see some advantage to a direct drive hub but otherwise a mid-drive is superior for almost every purpose.

@SpeedRacer 650 it's surprisingly adept at both roles. I have an Intense Carbine for real enduro riding though as the X-1 falls short in terms of outright performance off the pavement.

@@JustEnjoyingLife73 I agree no need for any pesky useless limiting factors. If course if one creates a "utter insanity" mode through unadvised use of extreme over volting and other ill concieved practices you would need the ability to limit the output on command. Failure to do so may result in death by an extreme overload of endorohic chemicals entering the cerebral cortex simultaneously resulting in permanent insanity and in some municipalities, public floggings. My specialties are electrical fires and explosion. 😜
