Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit kzbin.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

For the metal rig, you’re supposed to use snell hooks on them. That is the first time I have seen someone clip the hook directly onto the rig. I did lose one of those metal rigs after it caught something while I was fishing off a pier. Today, I tried out a dropper loop rig and I found it more effective than the metal rig. I’m definitely taking that metal rig out of my tackle box and using a dropper loop rig from now on.

I was going to say the exact same thing, I have never seen anyone clip on to the end of the metal. I make my own 12" or so snell and they actually work pretty well for me. I pull the hook through the loop at the base of the metal around the line, then thread the hook through the metal loop and the hook will always stay untangled and presentable.

Because of your video with your dad in the T knot. I was able to use that setsup to catch a 6ft 3in sturgeon. She weighed around 126 lbs and I was using 60lbs braid.

First time surf fishing this past September and I found a video similar to this and tied my own rigs instead of buying the premade ones. Pre-tied several of them and use a (extra heavy duty) snap swivel on my braided main line. Tie a figure 8 knot at the top and bottom instead of a surgeons knot. Snap the top loop into the snap swivel and you’re good to go. Makes it easier when needing to change a rig for whatever reason as well. Caught my first saltwater fish on this setup, a slot redfish. Will be tying more of these in the future for my next surf fishing trip.

We use the wire rig, minus the clips, with two snelled 2/0 baitholders each baited with a gulp swimming mullet and enough weight to keep it on the bottom. Drag it along and it is deadly on flounder. The wire arms plus the line of the snelled hook keep the baits away from the rig and cover more ground. Sometimes I use flicker snells with spinner blades if I have them

Just came back from deep sea fishing in Panama City Beach, Fl. Had a blast. Tied the same rig ... no metal wires to complicate things. We’ve caught a lot of fish with this rigs including sharks and grouper. I definitely do not want to harm a fish - shark and grouper by leaving those metal rigs.

commenting from Australia, i use both of those rigs and found both have their pro's and con's. I use the metal rig for my big surf fishing rod as the metal rig comes in two sizes and stops the teeth, ive hooked massive rays and fish before but i learnt to change the quick connect/snap swivel to handle larger fish. i love using the mono for my lighter rods and for the less aggressive appearance but i have lost a lot of weights and hooks with the mono... thanks! tight lines.

I've never used those rigs, always tied my own because sometimes you need to adjust your droppers to find fish at different levels in the water column and also I just find them stupid, like why would I buy that when I can tie my own custom rig in under 2 minutes, love the content man, keep it up, going out on a jetty in a few days to target some grouper, hell yeah

I've never put the hook directly on the clip. Been fishing for 55 years, not that putting it on the clip is bad or anything. Fished for everything from crappies to Blue Fin Tuna and Marlin. I have used those double wire rigs with my grand kids here in the west Gulf near Tampa. Nothing like watching your 11 year old grad daughter catch her first double Grunt (grey snapper) 1 lb each maybe, on one of those rigs. For fish with teeth like mackerel you have to use wire. Good video and learned something even at my old age. As I get older it is more fun to fish for smaller fish.

I have been using both of those rigs for years. The one reason I use a steel rig is when the toothy critters are out stealing bait and I don’t want to keep losing my tackle but other wise I normally just make my own similar to the one you made.

It actually does not matter if you use that metal rig or a rig you built with mono line. I have tried both and they both gave me great success. The reason why you want the metal rig setup is that it last forever if you set it up properly. The only thing I would change with the metal rig is not to use those metal clips/swivel to attach the hook. I instead use a short leader with a figure 8 knot at the end. It's easy to set up and change out hooks. The problem with using the monoline setup is that you have to deal with the ENTIRE setup at the end and during fishing. If one peace break, you lose everything. Metal rig doesn't break. Whenever I'm snagged with the metal rig set up, I break my weight off first or one of the hooks. However, the rig will still remain attached to my mainline.

I, for one, have never seen these type rigs with the snap swivel. Usually the wire is just looped at the end and then you just loop a snelled hook on. It's actually a very effective rig for perch, catfish and other species in the Great Lakes. Just because it doesn't meet your requirements doesn't make it a non effective rig.

Sooooo refreshing to see how passionately you present your case! I fish about 98%of the time on a pier in a resort area and I see them danged metal rigs all the time. My attitude equals yours. I have converted hundreds of fishers to the Fishing Mortician rig. the mortician rig is an antidote which cures all. it's simple elegance, cheaply made, hardy, and handy. I have used the metal rig without the clips my own snelled hooks on offshore fishing. For porgy, blues. Blk seabass. Worked go ok s so far. But I also do the double drop or a single drop the same way and it also works. I guess whatever you feel is good at the moment tight lines. 🤘👍

asapfswag I always carry an extra couple catfish rigs with weight and hooks everything for people that fish for catfish at my lakes pier. I always let them know that switching to mono helps with snags and helps with sensitivity and more hook ups. Had 2 people start getting bites a caught catfish after they switched to my rig haha

The metal clip you point to is a cross lock. It only works if it is attached correctly. The one in your video is only one of two points is closed. This lookes secure but a large fish wil pop it open. Secondly, if you add a lighter line between your rig and the weight, when you get snagged, the lighter line breaks and you lose only the weight and not the whole rig. Great videos. Biggest difference is your rig will tangle in current and waves going in and out. The purpose of the steel rig is that each branch off can swing in the difrection of the current or waves. If you truly want a better rig, use a 3 way swivel that the middle rotates instead of a dropper loop.

I got used to using those steel rigs after learning to fish in South America. One of my favorite fish is El Dorado and the Pacu and both have phenomenal teeth. Now I fish in the Atlantic (shore/pier) and there is no need for that kind of rig. Thanks for the tutorial.

Hey Skipper. What I like about the metal rig is the long life. I've had my rings for 20 years lol and haven't lost one yet. But what I hate is I have to clean them after every trip or they will rust bad. I am going to learn to make those rings from your videos and give them a try. Out here in Brooklyn we use both. The metal rig and the mono rig. With the metal rigs we tie about a 10-18”leader off of the swivel where you put the hook. Nobody puts the hook directly on the swivel. Reason for the metal rigs is we fish a lot of jetties and bridges, the metal is strong enough to rub rocks and pilings, and the bottom without getting torn or shredded like other lines. Looks janky but it works. Only a googan would place a hook right on the clip. 🤣😂 and evening then, it works still.

In New Zealand, ive never seen that crappy metal rig sold, but we have plenty of choices of mono ledger rigs right off the shelf. In fact our ledger rigs use a tough trace so you don't need to double up on the mono, its designed to be super clear, abrasive resistant and presents beautifully.

Just started surf fishing and picked up a nice 8000 series reel. Of the 2 times I’ve gone fishing either from the beach or from the pier I haven’t caught much. Nothing from the beach so far. I use those rigs on my overnight float traps. I have several of these 3ft spreader like things that are cross shaped and attach in the middle so you can have 4 lines out with only 1 float. I attach as many of those cheap rigs as the water depth allows so I get as many hooks in the water. I'm usually going for catfish and just cover each hook with liver scented bait and can get 3 our 4 a night. Yes, I eat them and I then use the carcasses in bait traps to catch live bait

This is a rig we use alot in England from mainly piers. We don't really need metal ware here as fish are not like anything else around the world. If we shark fish then it's an entirely different rig altogether. Anyway man love your channel. Its great to sea how ppl from round the world fish. Two reasons for using the twisted metallic rig. One is to avoid getting entangled with the main line bcoz of the T-Shaped. the second is to prevent losing the rig from the toothy fish. However, I agree with you about the end clip with the hook system, which might prevent fish from biting.

I agree , snap swivels is the absolute worse part in that wire rig, and even monofilament rigs sold at wal mart. Those snap swivels will open once you start catching decent fish. Im talking bull redfish, gator trout, etc.... I learned the hard way, by losing fish. 😞 The hi lo rig is an OK rig, but there is much better even simpler rigs you can make with monofilament leader. Knocker rig for example.... or live bait rig... carolina rig... endless posiblities once you learn to tie your stuff..

In Hawaii there are certain spots where that wire rig is used heavily. We have lava rocks and very sharp coral reef, the pressure alone on mono at the initial leader line will cut easily if rubbed on these rocks and will lose the fish.. instead of using a thicker rub line, we use wire leaders.. such as those. In sand areas those are not needed but cliffs and heavy reef areas those are used.

I tie a lot of those dropper rigs for Catfish. The only difference is I add a swivel at the top where the rig attaches to the main line and on the leader side I thread an old wine cork onto the line. This keeps the line upright in the water column with out needing tension on the line.

Watched the video, practiced w a few and already have a few different styles from single and double like these. Different hook sizes and the ease to swap the hooks as well. Only thing I havent bought are bait hooks, but besides that it is very easy and cheap. Love it! Thank you.

I shore fish and use a running sinker rig. I've always pre tied a bunch of traces so I can easily swap these out quickly when fishing. I've started using snaps to attach the trace as I hate standing in the surf trying to tie knows. Sacrilege I know but it's far quicker to un snap and re snap rather than tieing another knot

I am used to be drifting with my boat using these metalrigs. I never use the clip, i add about 5 cm of mono on the top one and then the hook. I like the fact that the hook comes away from the rest of the rig and not tangling up. On the bottomrig i place a much longer mono, about 40 cm letting the bait drag along the bottom. My rigs are longer with more distance between the hooks. The funny part is, i use the metalrig for smaller fish, straight mono like tied in this video for bigger fish :)

Florida Atlantic coast use a orange bead that mimics mole crab eggs, I think it helps. Many comments talk about needing steel for shark. I switched from wire to heavy (200lb) mono with crimp sleeve. Mostly catching 3-5 ft blktips, spinners. I cover crimp with rubber tube to reduce metal contact. More takes. So far have not lost a shark.

i AGREE.... i'm a hobby fisher and i noticed that this pre made rig is very-unnatural to the fish... the refuse to bit when i use this... what i usually do is attach hooks on mono-filament to the leads but i makes sense to just make it out of the same mono-filament. now they lay at the bottom of my tackle box, i'll find use for them some day i guess... prob when i'm out in the sea trying to pull in a shark or sum...

I use snap swivels and barrel swivels on both my freshwater and saltwater rigs as well as light and heavy set ups. If you get the correct size and strength swivels, they work fine. I used to use wire set ups in saltwater but, changed to heavy mono and have been doing great. (400 lbs mono leader caught 13' Hammerhead) Mono leaders are safer for fish than wire leaders.

When I started fishing, I would buy up these rigs from Walmart. I would lose half of them during a trip because of snags. When I learned to make the Hi/Low rig, that changed the game. Costs went down and fish went up. I struggled with the T-knot for a long time, but just recently gotten more consistent and better. The best part of this is my tackle box has gotten smaller and more compact, since I removed a ton of unnecessary gear.

Tie the mono rigs at home and wrap them onto a rig winder or foam pool noodle section it keeps them tangle free and you can cut the noodle into small sections it holds lots and after use keeps them from becoming a huge birds nest in the box

I have seen the stainlesss snaps used to attach sinkers to a rig similar to yours just make certain that they will open up at a pound test less than half the breaking strength of your leader material if the sinker snags the snap will open and you lose just the sinker another use I can think of is where you want a free swinging minnow type lure the snap is easier and quicker than untying and trying a loop knot if you are changing lures frequently

ive caught sturgeon with no mods with store bought rigs.. but now i buy the arms and use 40 to 80 lb line for the rigs.. the arms keep the hooks from tangling and wrapping around the main line easily but I make those rigs 4 to 5 feet long for 12 foot casting rods.. big fresh water fish staple..

Hey Skipper, try twisting the line/loop in your fingers for a "twisted dropper loop". Takes an extra 10 seconds and you end up with something that looks like the twists in the metal rig. I think it does a better job of holding the bait at a 90 degree angle and it looks great!

I used to use metal bottom rigs until about 3 years ago when I learned how to tie the same rigs that was demonstrated in the video. I've never seen them sold with the clips like that. I Used to buy packs of hooks with the line already rigged to them then loop them on the bottom rig with great success But it is much cheaper to make your own out of mono but get rid of the beads, I call that extra jewelry that is overkill. Just get out there and fish and have fun

I haven't used metal rigs but I do use swivels. I'm still learning, but wanted to make a universal rig where can change out the leader hooks and sinker if wanted to. Effective so far. I like the metal rigs. Just a easy hook and go. I’ve caught so many fish. The only thing is the cost but otherwise no issue. People knock them only for the cost.

i dont think the cost is a problem for me, i feel that i really struggle to get bites on a metal rig and its not as easy to customise as a mono rig. i do buy ready made mono rigs when i want to be lazy but its honestly not that time consuming to make my own, change the dimensions to what i need and i also catch more fish.

I was taught that a "direct-connect" is only supposed to be used on fast action lures, generally targeting predatory fish...or for a leader, but attached to the line end, not on the fish's end.😆 A direct-connect to a bait hook supposedly creates too much of an unnatural presentation. Custom mono/steel rigs are always the best bet, imo. Also, cheap direct-connects (Walmart) often have straight clasps that open under tension.... meaning lost fish, rigs, time & effort. Mono is cheap.... If you're out fishing, you already have time & patience.👍 Mess around & see what suits you. ***Edit: I'm calling them "direct-connects" because I forget the actual name for them.🤔 The setup with the direct-connect is actually just backwards, in the thumbnail. In my experience, they are a great way to quickly change rigs when a particular type of fish gets active under your line. Great video; keep them coming! Tight lines.

Droper rig it's been used for years, i tie my own as I fish in 100m of salt water over a reef, 30kg leader, 6/0 6677 snapper hooks , or gamagatsu 9/0

Take the hook and connect it with the metal rig with some fishing line in between. Metal rig prevent the baits from tangle it self. But i agree with you if they are not putting some line before connecting it with metal rig. The line must shorter than the bridge or any shorter wire length. Remember, the metal rig is use in harsh water current only due to it's price.

Totally agree man, most respectable fish wouldn't touch that metal rig. I use 40 lb fluorocarbon, to tie a ledger rig. Use circle hooks and put the loop in from the front of the hook, no beads of flasher Better hook up rate than tieing the hook on. I use the improved clinch as well. Excellent knot

This is good and can be made better if you use the "T" knot to replace the dropper loop.

I use that rig with Snell hooks in salt water I have considerable luck on them some time I'll pull up 2 bass/sculpin on a single rig. Also have pulled in numerous halibut.

I used the metal rig from walmart as my son had set up the poles before we got to the lake. That setup grabbed a rock as is still on the bottom of the lake. I know how to tie so I setup a line with one dropper and caught 4 trout on it in 2 hours. He got one. nuff said.

Hey skipper big fan I to use that and I think it’s mostly for people who in the hurry for fishing and don’t feel like making they on fishing line it’s already prep and using it I have caught some decent amount of good fish mostly catfish and drum but I think it just a helpful tool for those who don’t want to make they own fishing lines or don’t have enough patience to do so

I have some of these, but have never actually used them. I'm still new to fishing and still learning knots, so there's that. I'll have to go along with this one with string to get it😅 I do love the clips though, as I switch lures and hooks more than rods
