"Hezbollah is far from defeated, it remains an effective fighting force; Hassan Nasrallah's killing could be a strategic mistake for Israel": Ali Rizk, Lebanese Political and Security Affairs Analyst, to Karan Thapar for The Wire.
..........................................
The well-known and highly regarded Lebanese political and security affairs analyst, Ali Rizk says “Hezbollah is far from defeated, it remains an effective fighting force”. Ali Rizk says whilst the killing of Hassan Nasrallah was a major blow it could end up being a strategic mistake on Israel’s part because, as a result, support for Hezbollah could grow if only as a way of revenge against Israel.
In a 35-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Ali Rizk, speaking from Beirut, explains that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s call (on Tuesday) to the Lebanese people to rise up against Hezbollah because otherwise they could face the same destruction as Gaza, has not had any effect as far as he knows. He points out that several Christian Maronite political parties, several Sunni groups, who were earlier opposed to Hezbollah, as well as Walid Jumblatt’s Druze organization stand firmly with Hezbollah. There is, therefore, little chance of the Lebanese people rising up against Hezbollah. More importantly, Hezbollah is a Lebanese organization and not foreign to the country and it has deep roots in the Lebanon.
If you want to know about and understand the impact on the Lebanon and, in particular, Beirut of the persisting Israeli airstrikes and land incursions, if you want to understand how the Lebanese view Hezbollah, if you want to understand the impact on Hezbollah, both politically and militarily, as well as what we can expect from Iran as a response and, specifically, how Iran is likely to respond to any Israeli retaliation for the 1st October missile attack, then, this is an interview I recommend.
Mr. Rizk also speaks about the impact on Lebanon, a country of 5.5 million where already 1,400 have been killed and, possibly, up to 1.3 million displaced. What future does Lebanon today face?
Mr. Rizk speaks clearly, analytically, with great attention to detail and with great knowledge of the politics and history of this part of the world. All of this is delivered in flawless English.
