HGV Owner/Driver UK: Applying For Your 'Goods Vehicle Operators Licence'.

In this video I talk about the application process regarding how and why you need to apply for a 'Goods Vehicle O Licence'.
If you want to operate a commercial vehicle in The UK which has a gross weight exceeding 3500kg (In the video I make reference to vehicles of 7500kg and above when I should have said vehicles over 3500kg as some vehicles can be plated at 5500kg and so require an O Licence) this is what you need to operate within the law.
This isn't a tutorial as of what to do, it's more of a talk and explanation of how I went through the application process.
I didn't split the video into parts so apologies if it's too long, remember you don't have to watch it all in one go !

Hi, it's all really helpful, just a interesting bit is, if i decided to rent my truck, then what reg i can put in application 🤔🤔 if i dont have truck at the moment and think to work on rented truck 🤔🤔 Hopefully someone has answer ☺️

You don't need to put the truck registration number on the application. IF /WHEN the application is granted you can then put the registration number of the rented vehicle on the licence.

Ha, for clarity I’m a 10 year old milk man😂 funny you should mention Ltd and companies house, I was looking at a job on a well known platform and I saw a job and as always a new name to me means quick search of feedback and if companies house before I bid. Seller had posted 6 jobs and had 3 complaints, so straight away I was no longer interested but I went to companies house and searched the ltd company name and the business has been dissolved on 22/12/22 but was still active😂😂😂 Pays to do a bit of due diligence on businesses you may work for regardless of your or their size

Hi with own truck how much you can expect to earn in net monthly, hiring a driver and driving by yourself ? Everybody tells gross 10k, 20k and nobody talks about the profit margin you get in real every month, well i will apreciate if you would put some light on this topic Thank you

It varies alot, I never discuss my financial info but I can tell you that once you know all your 'standing costs' eg truck payments, insurance, road tax, wage, inspections, etc etc you can then try and work out how much you need to charge to cover those costs. Then you have your 'running costs' which vary eg fuel, maintenance, tyres etc. If you have a £10k truck on finance for 5 years that's £2k per year, if you have a £100k truck that's £20k a year. If you cover the same mileage for the same rate the £10k truck will earn more profit. It all depends how hard you want to work and also keeping the wheels turning. If all your costs are (minimum)£50k per year, you charge £2.00 per loaded mile and do 50k miles that's £100k, if you charge £3.00 per mile that's £150k. It's not that simple (or easy) I just hope you understand what I'm trying to say ? I've a mate who has 4 trucks, the drivers keep 33% of what the truck earns, the running costs are 33% and the Company get 33%, obviously that's a rough estimate but it works well for him as long as the wheels are turning ! Your question is difficult to answer as everybody has varying costs to cover, they charge different rates and cover different mileages.

Really helpful this video mate and thank you for that. I have a question please, I'm 1st class Hgv driver and I would want to start my own transport business. My question is, £12000 - 15000 in my account would be enough to start the business? Thank you.

It depends on how much things cost to actually get your vehicle on the road. You will always need access to approx £8000 to satisfy the conditions of your O Licence, so if the remainder is enough to pay a deposit on a truck, insure it, tax it and pay for your overheads for a couple of months (fuel, wage, truck parking etc) you should be ok. Remember though, it might take a couple of months for you to start being paid for your work. That's the difficult bit when you start as lots of money is being spent and nothing is coming in. It then gets easier as cash starts to flow in and out on a regular basis making it easier to pay for your outgoings.

So if I was to apply today and find a external transport manager and find a landowner/workshop to allow me to park my wagon and provide me with servicing agreements. If I was then to not buy the wagon and not use the transport manager and not use the parking spaces (I’d imagine there would have been an agreement between both party’s regarding it) could they revoke the license and take it off me if I was not getting anything on the road in say a 3-12 month period after approval?

I think the only reason your licence would be revoked is if you broke the terms of your licence, so if everything is still in place 12 months later you should still be OK. You may get contacted though regarding not adding the vehicle details as having a vehicle is the whole point of the application. They just understand that it makes sense applying for a licence before committing to a vehicle purchase, that's why they give the opportunity to add the vehicle after the licence has been granted.

Apparently I’ve jist saw another video and you do an agreement to give them your truck reg once you buy your truck, as apparently most ppl get the O license then once that’s sorted they then give the reg of truck once you get it ,I’m just trying to find out how to atcherly get work but bid on jobs ect , I’m just not sure how that part works , but considering an O license
