"Charlie Hustle" is not an affectionate nickname. It is an insult, a slick way of saying someone has no integrity. Pete Rose was nicknamed Charlie Hustle, and since then the name has become synonymous with cheats, liars and gamblers. The scene at 1:26 says so much with so little wording. Some awesome atmospheric story telling, the way Howard pauses, then compliments jimmy’s character and then we see jimmy’s face, shows without saying anything further that these two deep down had respect for one another and know if they were working together rather than opposing each other, they most likely would’ve seen a lot of success.

This further reiterates that Howard is actually a decent guy and actually has a lot of affection for Jimmy. Sure, he was hard on Kim but she has arguably become a better lawyer because of it. Like Jimmy, he idolized Chuck and only wanted his admiration Watching Season 6 now really shows the depths Kim and Jimmy are going down by framing Howard for Kim's benefit

Something I love about Howard and that I picked up on right away is how he always carries himself upright and proud almost. His shoulders are always high and his back is straight, often he puts his chin up a bit. It's all subtle but it hammers home his characters biggest trait (imo), his pride. When he's drunk or manic he loses control of this proud demeanor and slumps his shoulders and drops his head. Fantastic physical acting from Patrick Fabian.

Howard, like Skylar in Breaking Bad, is a character that most people who watch the show hate for practically no reason. It’s amazing how these shows turn the bad guys into the protagonists by showing their POV rather than the good guys’ (and through fantastic writing lol)
@Ryan888813 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Howard is one of those characters you learn to like more as you see more of where he's coming from. At first he may seem like the typical "bad guy" in movies or even like some weird jock but I think that quickly changes and they make that easy for the viewer to see because they go out of their way to humanize his character a lot. Chuck was the "skyler" of the show. The writers were able to keep chuck and skyler's characters unlikable from virtually all angles without making it unrealistic. I think a lot of viewers side with Howard and his character even though they may "root" more for Jimmy in a given scene. I think most viewers just want Howard and Jimmy to get along.

WARNING SPOILERS FOR SEASON 6 MID SEASON FINALE . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Bruh watching this after watching the finale is heartbreaking. Howard was geniuinely supportive of Jimmy and Kim. His little prideful smirk after Kim baited him into the Nepotism trap is wild. He really did do so much for them, and they paid it back by trying to ruin his career and reputation.
@JoJo-fj7yi2 жыл бұрын
You can see Howard liked Jimmy, the only parts he didn’t like was because of what Chuck was telling him. The saying goes “if you’re told something enough you start to believe it”. I think Chuck was a big reason Saul was created and Jimmy wasn’t able to flourish as a lawyer he was earlier in the series. (Especially because he didn’t want him to be hired) I think if Howard had a backbone and stood up to Chuck’s jealousy and bitterness toward Jimmy, he would still be alive today and have the respect of Kim and Jimmy. But he stood up too late to Chuck, and Chucks damage to Jimmy was already done. Thus Jimmy and Kim lost all respect for Howard. Jimmy had issues before, don’t get me wrong, but maybe having Chuck not call him a liar constantly and believing in him would have helped turn him into a better person

Charlie Hustle is a lot nicer name than Slippin' Jimmy which brings up some of Saul's most demeaning cons he did for money. Though "Charlie' kind of evokes his brother's name, kind of implying he was breaking his back to BECOME his brother, which might not have sit right with Jimmy even if it was true.
