and that was a very good video. love the attention to detail especially the points about removing solder from the pins. if someone didn't know they might use to much force and f up their system

Thanks! Yep I like to cover off all the details but run the risk of my videos going for ages. I think this one worked out really well as a good balance.

Great job =D One thing I would point out, when you remove a chip and then use it to hold the socket in place - be careful there's not still solder on the chip pins, because it will then join to the socket when you try to solder the socket on the board. Very tidy job though - I am impressed =D Finally someone else has started using PlastX - that makes two of us now lol.

PlastX is the best! Yes that's a good point re the solder on the pins. I briefly mentioned wiping them clean with the iron, but I didn't go further into it (I had already rambled long enough). I think as long as you don't use too much heat when soldering in the socket it seems fine. I had no issues but I can how that could go very wrong. Thanks for the comments!

Awesome video as per usual man nice and detailed.You could also wrap some 2400grit wet/dry paper around your file to finish for a ultra smooth finish.

i bought a PCE DUO-R from him...... i purchased as is, and the description says does not power on so thought must be the fuse. well it turns on and the graphics are corrupted, and the disc does not spin. was a gamble that didn't pay off. oh well will get to it one day. but was annoyed as the description was incorrect!

Nice job. I'm an amateur and modded my AV Fami with the Hi-Def NES kit too. I did have trouble with the large cap in the back, (C13 I think). The one Jason sent was larger than the original and totally crowded the smaller cap next to it. Had to install it at a slight angle. You didn't really go over that in the video so I assume he sent a better size for yours.

He also sent 1500uF instead of 1000uF so I just used one that I already had in stock. I've let him know and he's amending the AV Famicom kit.

have a usa top loader so might need to order a kit :) looks similar in difficulty to rgb mod
@GlobalGarageAus

It's fairly straight forward job, but does require good soldering experience. I think the desoldering gun is a must.
@vougbour1
@vougbour1 7 жыл бұрын
looks like i have the same desoldering gun you use, and i have a love hate relationship with it. find it needs alot of maintenance and cleaning. Also use a Japanese made solder sucker with disposable silicone tips and it does a fantastic job of removing solder :) what other systems are you considering modding next? looked into any PC engine stuff?, if after any from Australia i have a few you can take a look at :)

John Raymond T. Domingo No the kit doesn't work with the Famicom as the PPU revision is buggy, although I would check with @gametechus or @kevtris

Hey Global, I Have picked up an AV Famicom just like the one you have modified here. Would you be able to do the same Hi Def NES install for me? The nightmare will be shipping it to and from Australia but I would be willing to do so :)

Very good video. Are you able to hear expansion sound using AV cables? (In games like Gimmick or Japanese Castlevania 3)

I don't think this mod touches the system's analog audio output at all. The AV Famicom's expansion sound mixing should remain intact. Unfortunately, the AV Famicom's expansion sound mixing is not so good with original carts. On original cartridges, the expansion audio is way too loud relative to the system's audio. However, expansion audio from the Everdrive N8 actually sounds well balanced on the AV famicom, because its expansion audio output is quieter than original cartridges. On the HDMI output, this shouldn't be an issue. The Hi Def NES board digitally generates both the system and expansion audio, totally bypassing the AV Famicom's mismatched audio mixing.

Replacing the capacitors it's so stupid if you don't know if they are good or not If it worked fine before just leave them
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 7 жыл бұрын
I sort of agree, but caps in these consoles are getting very old. The customer ordered a full cap kit which I think was wise.
@AndehX
@AndehX 7 жыл бұрын
There's absolutely nothing wrong with replacing capacitors as long as you're using good quality ones. It's actually a good idea to replace them now while the console is open, so that you don't need to go back in a few years and open the console again when the old ones eventually go bad. At least replacing them now means that you dont need to open the console again for potentially another 30 years.

The Game Hub it amazes me that you look it over so blatantly the nes front loader is 32 years old and the top loader is 24 years old. Caps have an expected life cycle of 15 to 20 years.
