Hey - sweet lesson on hi-hat barking. I had a stroke 3 years ago on my left side and my hi-hat foot is pretty weak. However - I seem to get buy! Most of the time I just keep the cymbals really loose to get a full rock/thrashing sound! MY 15 year old is recently found a interest in drumming. I'm having fun passing on what Ive learned over the hears. I'm going to make him watch this for sure!!

Yes, I played the Roland as well and loved it. It's a great setup. There are a couple reasons I chose this kit though. 1) The silicone heads feel more natural to me 2) I can easily load sounds in via USB 3) The drum sounds on the module are awesome 4) Some of our Drumeo artists are Yamaha endorsed so it makes more sense to have this in studio 5) It's cheaper. Since I only use it for a practice tool, I don't need the $8000+ kit :) - Jared Falk

Just want to thank you Jared and all at drumeo. As a guitar player of 40 odd years I recently decided to play drums too. I could keep a beat but obviously I had no technique or theory. Ive been watching a lot of your youtube vids on everything from tuning and setting up to fundamentals and grooves and, honestly Im not sure what Ive got myself into.LOLOL. That said, you guys are making this journey a lot more interesting, intriguing and fun. Thanks guys. Andy

New drummer here, got a drum kit a week ago. Your lessons are awesome Jared, learned the seven beats I must know, just need a little more work on no 6 the bossa nova. I splitted up the bass independence etude, begun with the bass and metronome and carried on with bass and hihat. Your rudiments on the drum kit are fun, and I came up with exercises of my own putting together patterns of paradiddel, paradiddel-diddel, and inverted doubbles (RLLR) which turn a righthand lead to lefthand lead.

Hi Jared. I think this is a great lesson and I'm looking forward to trying the exercises - I appreciate that in terms of technique the h-hat bark is pretty straight forward (and you do mention about not having the hats open too long), but I would have liked a bit more explanation of the right and left foot syncopation. But please keep up the great lessons.
@drakd10012 жыл бұрын
i really appreciate the lesson. im thinking of starting to play the drums and thought i would see how they are played first. when i see stuff like led zep , sheila e, hanna ford or neil pert i think there is no way, i do appreciate the simple way you have made some of these beats. it looks like all drummers kinda have these beats to play to

Excellent tutorial. Will be interesting to see what kind of drummers will spring up in the next decade after they had the luxury of learning from internet video. I started drumming in the 70's when there were no videos, no mp3's to loop, and no internet. We had to go to a store and buy a vinyl album and figure it out by ear. Would have loved to had KZbin back then to see what the drum legends were actually doing to achieve the sounds I heard.

Good talk. I think the reason it's usually on an off beat is because it's a great sound for syncopation. The song that is commonly credited with bringing this technique to the mainstream is Aretha Franklin - Rocksteady. Drums on that song by Bernard Purdie. I would also suggest you listen carefully to the feel of the right vs left hand hi-hat "barks" as you played them in this video, lesson #1. The hi-hat open-time is naturally a little different. I play them both ways, depending on situation.

The rev's hi hat barks in Gunslinger, Almost Easy and Scream are really cool, especially gunslinger the way they're in the middle of fills. I also love some of mike portnoys uses of hi hat barking, such as that bit of dance of eternity with the beat that's pretty much constant barks.
@1dudecrush10 жыл бұрын
You know, I think the song almost easy was the thing that taught me hi hat barks...didn't even know what it was called for years, and i don't even listen to a7x anymore. But those were tasteful bark accents. Good ole Jimmy.
