it is incredible how much your beats groove. Your Lessons are proof, that this is not just "stuff you are born with" as so many people think, you have to learn it like everything else and some can actually teach it. Mind is absolutely blown as usual. Thanks!

tharrock337 thanks man for the kind words. There are some instances where you are just born with it, but my goal is to find away to help bridge that gap for people.

@@JuanCarlitoMendoza Sorry for the wall of text, feel free to skip it's just a subject I have given some thought to in the past and maybe I am looking for someone to throw my thoughts at. I kinda think it is relevant though so in case you feel like wasting a couple of minutes, here it is. I think when people say "born with it" what they are really talking about is rythms that are natural to certain people. I don't think anyone is born with it though, at least not in a genetic way. It could be, but I doubt it, instead I think it is about cultural importance of certain sounds and rythms. I did a workshop with some african Bongo Drummer whose name escapes me right now. He toured europe though and showed beats that don't really follow a western style of thinking in BPM and signature, instead it was about long and short accents. if you were to write it as western style it would propably be some odd time signature like 7/8 or 5/8 and the last beat would alternate between a normal and a dotted note. Not really a concept that is easy to notate but you could train yourself to feel it (I don't think I fully managed but he sure could dance to it). Much like you can train yourself to feel The master of puppets pause that I saw someone on youtube notate as 21/32 (I think it was) wich is absolutely absurd. You don't count that, you just go "master pause master". In his defense the youtuber in question did point that out as well. Anyways our workshop drummer told us in between the exercises that he believes 4/4 feels natural to industrial nations because in the factories, in the engines, in the ticking of our watches we always have evenly spaced repetitions of the same accents. He told us that he grew up in the African rainforest where all you hear are animal sounds and wind and maybe therefore their music follows that less structured, more "wild" pattern. I think that stayed with me and therefore I can absolutely see, why certain people are seemingly "born with" groove in them. I think it is like your native language, you don't even know that you learn it, and it is almost impossible to stop thinking in it, even if you move to a different country. Still research shows that it is possible for people of any age to learn to speak a new language without accent. It just gets a lot harder. That is what I think of your lessons as, the "hard way" to learn groove (not saying your lessons too hard it is just the nature of having to understand something new rather than staying in a familiar way of thinking), if you are not someone who grew with it.

@@tharrock337 Totally understand it what you are saying as I learned that way as well (by listening, emulating and trusting my ears; which is a TOTALLY valid way). My approach to these lessons are just a way to notate for those who are pretty analytical and trying to find a way to understand a concept. Some people don't really have the greatest ears, so having them visually see it makes sense to them. For me it's all about the VAK (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic) approach. If you have all three (which we definitely do when playing an instrument) it should help transfer all that information to the student. Great thoughts man and no offense taken at all! Cheers.

Yeah I know man, this concept is definitely for the intermediate/advanced player, but I will work on some easier materials for people (which is something that I already planned on doing, but just haven't had the time to do so, as I do everything myself). Filming, mixing, editing the videos takes up a whole lot of time, so I don't get to the projects fast enough, but be patient and stay tuned.

I look at it more like lrk and then do a back beat on 2 and 4 and keep the left hand ghost note. Then I add the kick on one and that does the grove. Just easier for me to do it that way. Makes it kinda linear pattern with the downbeats being ghosted.

I love the Jazz thin hi hats (14" ones) as well. Those are really nice. If you're not opposed to buying used check out reverb, nelsons drum shop, etc. They might have some!
