If you’re playing with others (or even alone) post something showing how you’re doing. 58 yrs old myself, playing drums for first time after decades of bass playing

Never tighten the top and bottom knurled nuts. The top hi hat cymbal should be a bit loose to “sing”. Get the two knurled nuts closest to the top cymbal adjusted so there is some give, the tighten the top-most (third) nut against the top nut to lock it at the adjustment you’ve set. Adjust the two cymbals with a slight separation between them. Adjust the filter so that there is a bit of an angle to the bottom cymbal. I’ve played semi-professionally for 50+ years, so I have a bit of experience with this.

Clutch is way to tight..the top hat should be free to move around considerably.. also the tilter screw should never be removed ..you need it to angle the bottom cymbal and give it significant tilt.. to avoid air pockets.. most drummers are not using the quick beat bottom with the holes and even the quick beat bottom with the holes needs to be tilted to give the hats a much-improved chick sound.

Thank you. I'm a rookie but that's what I thought. Otherwise there would be no reason to have two nuts on top that can be adjusted away from the cymbal.

I thought hihats were supposed to sound pingy and nice. Mine sound like I'm hitting an old rubbish bin lid.

Thanks so much for this. I'm not a drummer but I have a friend who wants to drum for our band. Problem is, he has the energy but doesn't know how to set up a drum, which leaves everything to me. When I was recording, I couldn't get the annoying sizzle out of the hi hats through the mix. The tension rod is the problem. Thank you

I can't find a video Anywhere where it actually shows You what the pedal of the High hat symbol looks like. Specifically, how it sets up. Nobody shows you that they just keep showing you the symbols. It's a quarter of your equipment. The symbols do nothing without the pedal in the stand no one's discussing the pedals or the stands.

The top hat is too tight and the space between the two is too low when open. Old rule of thumb is 2 fingers of space or a little more. Lots of vids cover the space thing well.

my drummer told me the cymbals have to be a little loose because of whatever, is that true? i dont trust my drummer since the drums are mine :D

It depends on what type of sound you want but in general you want cymbals to be quite loose especially because it can help with the longevity of them. Crashes, Splashes, etc. are often quite loose so they can achieve the sound they were made for, stack cymbals on the other hand can be mounted a bit tighter to get a choked up sound.
