What's the correct Hi-Hat height?

Hey hope you're doing well this week. Hi-hat height on the drum kit is very important and can completely change the sound of any drummer. It amazing to see the difference in drumming techniques that are possible or impossible just from how high a drummers hi-hat position is.
In this video i'll explain why some hi-hat positions are good for some techniques and styles of music when others are not. That been said there's is nothing wrong with any position as they are all good in their own way, however it's good to understand why, and this video will explain all that. Get your drum stool at the height where you bass foot starts to bounce on it's own, using its reflexes, then start with your Snare Mind you, this could take years

BrendrumJones Hi. Very true, A guy on here a drummer has a show, similar to yours, he said find that natural knee bounce, and go from there. I wish I knew that 30 years ago, my whole kit came down in height and my playing improved immediately

For me I am really short (5'0). and I feel like my hi hat might be too high but I cant really lower it because then my snare drum cant lower anymore. If I lower my hi hat then my snare hand (left hand) hits my hi hat hand as I play

Love it brother great tips God bless you what is the proper way to play the hihat? I am a really late bloomer I have always had a love for drums and am now building my kit. Trying to tech myself proper techniques and build a firm foundation in playing a full kit and could use all the tips and suggestions I can get. The hi-hat is too limiting even for a rock drummer. It is mostly for some rock and heavy metal bashers. All due respect to Dave Grohl who many laymen think is the greatest drummer in the world but many highly skilled trained drummers would probably say his early work up until around 2000 was all arms and legs, fast flams, and loud smashing of the drum kit. I'm older than Dave and learned to play jazz and then played rock, blues, funk, etc. style drumming for 49yrs - I like drums who bash out the beat then flick the tip or crack the bell of the hi-hats within the beat. It adds to your chops which contributes to a unique style. I speak from experience and I admit to playing some styles better than others throughout my life. I I think am proficient student of music and percussion but not a freakish talent like Jordan Cannata, Omar Hakim, Steve Gadd, Neil Peart, and many other men and Women. (Important point. There are some awesome women drummers (Cindy Blackman) who are really getting the attention they deserve and acceptance playing all instruments in the rock and various musical styles. Seek them out on KZbin. Stay cool and keep learning about drumming and percussion every day. Playing with all 4 limbs and calculating complex rhythms in your head is a gift so be proud of your ability.👍🥁

I prefer my hihat up to shoulder level :) it just creates more room for my snare arm to move freely! But then, I mostly play my aux-hihat on the ride side to avoid crossarming even more.

The high hat height is a bloody personal preference. There is no "right" or "wrong" setting. If i want to have it high or low who da fack are you to tell me that i am wrong. Get a grip and start making real content not click bait titled crap

I have mine really high, due to my rack toms positioning. I'm thinking about turning my 13'' rack tom into a floor tom and bring the hats closer.

@@BrendrumJones Definitely not when mounted on the bassdrum bracket. They're massive. I've tried mounting them on a stand but that forces me to move the bassdrum further to the right which creates a similar problem.
