Fun Fact: Pepper's first name is Virginia, but they call her Pepper because in the comics the first time she meets Tony Stark is when she finds errors in the accounting books that amount to millions of dollars in loss. She demands to see Tony because he's the one who made the errors, and when Happy won't let her into his office, she pepper sprays him. It turns out Tony intentionally made the errors to see if anyone would call him on his mistake and she was the only one. So that's how she becomes his personal assistant.

Yeah. So instead of simply escaping they have an extended scene of our hero burning people wearing head scarfs. While his only allie literally died on a american flag - so Ironman has a reason to burn all these foreigners instead of flying away. What a piece of cheesy propaganda. Later he's confronting the guys taking hostages. At this point nothing is astablished and the writers can have him resolve the situation in any way: Smart, funny, heroic, using a taser.. so he is executing a dozend people by headshot. Wow. Slow clap. So he is an American milliionaire and arms-dealer and than he goes back to towel-country to execute bad guys without mercy. Wow wow wow. I'm glad this shit was cut for the German version because this makes him a unsympathetic asshole. I really can't understand why people like him. Oh wait, peolple like Optimus Prime and Leonidas aswell...

@@j.m.w.5064 he's specifically supposed to be everything the counterculture of the 70's hated turned into a hero. That's the notion. "Foreigners" lol, look I'm as virtue signaling a leftie as they come but cmon there's a much better way to frame that argument. They are literally like next level worst of the worst warlords who used his weapons to exploit the lives of civilians, and the thing he did was Blow up those weapons. I won't pretend, the MCU largely has a sympathetic representation of the US military and that Tony Stark is a dangerous cryptofascist teetering on the edge of good because of his memory and experience with Yinsen. He isn't great even if the music pretends he is sometimes, he's very obviously like the Punisher in the 1st movie, taking extrajudicial vengeful retribution on people, but the point is he's doing what no one else even remotely has the vested interest or the capacity to do. Protecting people literally everyone else abandoned who were only ever threatened because his weapons got into the hands of the wrong people. The whole reason the US military hadn't gone into Gulmira is BECAUSE they were using people as human shields and as far as I know the only human tech possible way to resolve that situation is instantaneous shot, not through the head, but obviously specifically through the base of their spinal column so they can't shoot. I have absolutely zero sympathy for human traffickers who use human shields, it's not like they obviously have a commisaar in this situation or like they surrendered (which if you know anything about the conflict you care so much about you would know is very common). The place that experienced the most suffering off of the privilege he was afforded was the place he went to. In a war zone like that the notion of zero casualties justice like fucking superman is not even remotely a concern, being the person who can personally act as a deterrent to slavers, warlords and all of the other shit they left off camera, that is a huge fucking positive game changer (except when supervillains become involved). They aren't like even a resistance group that does some unethical things, and he doesn't kill indiscriminately (unlike every Zack Snyder character or idk the vast majority of heroes who kill) he kills the people who use a human shield, his captors who had a personal stake in controlling weapons that threated thousands, and a tank that shot at him. Specifically to save the village his friend who died to save his life is from. It is so much more nuanced than anything else like it, and the whole point is he was bad and is trying to actually care about the impact of not even his actions but his negligence. He isn't an arms dealer anymore, which means he has to completely reinvent that company and that his "billions" which are absolutely all in the stock of this company are gone. They are a green energy, medical, and robotics company now. Whatever guy. You can claim that all of that good storytelling is just in order to allow the rich white guy to shoot at nameless terrorists, it would miss the entire point and history of his character but you could claim it. You could understand that starting with this incredibly white, privileged, pro military movie was very clearly the basis upon which the other stories Marvel gets to can be told because monied interests and production companies and a working relationship with the people who own all the planes and sets the Avengers take place in might be important. You could understand it is a fantasy of ending horrific human disasters without collateral damage and in a magic suit of armor that has an important framing of the nature of that conflict as profiting from selling weapons they don't need to people who can't afford them with government aid that could obviously be spent better, especially in the wake of Afghanistan. Idk man there are things to have a problem with his character but your complaints are soooo based in a notion you built from understanding none of the context whatsoever or even the things it so obviously critiques.

@@Souledex Thank you for your input. Flying over this makes me think that you may have actually something really interesting to say but... since you end on the notion that I don't understand nothing in the first place I really don't feel motivated to dig through all of it. What a shame. But I'll try to clarify: Yes, it is quite simple: Yes, the US Forces sponsor over 800 films if those comply with a positive depiction. Yes, explicitly showing how people who belong to a (really existing) enemy faction are burned with flamethrowers or executed by headshots in a kid's movie is a political statement. Yes, these two points together I do consider propaganda. No, I don't have to like that. Yes, the German military does the same, but our output is so utterly forgettable whatsoever that it's almost (!) not worth getting angry about it. But I mention it to drive home that this is not anti-American sentiment but about the practice of governments sneaking into entertainment. Have a great day.

That's only because so many of them have been done multiple times. We've had two for Batman, two for Superman, two for Spiderman. But this is the only one for Iron Man. @@hirvale No, I meant to say unnecessary. At this point, most of the MCU’s (and DC’s) A/B list characters do not need origin stories, several characters are 80+ years old at this point, and their symbols are quite recognizable as well as the basics of most of their origins. Superman - dead parents, alien. Batman - dead parents, rich guy who takes in kids to train to be vigilantes Spider-Man- dead parents, dead uncle - “with great power comes great responsibility” 😁
@hirvale

@@ajclements4627 Those are all characters who have already had origin stories in movies and who general audiences are already familiar with. Of course they don't need their origin stories to be retold. But the same can't be said for characters who are only famous in the comics. Not properly introducing them is how you alienate and loose a large chunk of your would be audience.

I checked through all three hundred comments, to make sure no one else had mentioned this. The MCU in general and even in this film can be crammed with details in the background. The robot that kept dousing Tony with the fire extinguisher and handed Tony his Arc Reactor Mk I is actually very special to him, despite the fact that he berates him in just about every interaction. The robot arm is named Dummy. Dummy is basically JARVIS' grandpa. In the intro video to Tony getting his award, look at all the magazine covers. Dummy is the AI robot that Tony made at MIT that got him so much acclaim, his very first artificial intelligence, still kicking over a decade later. Kind of his first born.

This is the perfect introductory Marvel movie in my opinion. It's not really a Super Hero movie. It's a well written action movie. I've turned a few friends onto these movies. Friends who dislike super heroes or sci-fi. It's just a pretty darn good movie. Growing up in the '70's (I'm old) I never really liked Iron Man. So when Marvel released this movie I had low hopes for it. Tony Stark is a butthole. But Robert Downey, Jr. plays him to perfection and makes him likable. He IS Iron Man. Marvel really didn't have much choice on heroes to star in their first movie. Way back when they needed money so they sold all the rights to their most popular characters. The X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man. The Iron Man movie was a gamble. Boy, did it pay off. Good luck on your journey. You're always fun to watch watching stuff. PS: All the movies are different. They have different tones and styles. Some you may prefer more than others. But they all create an overarching story that continues to this very day. Pay attention to everything. Peace PPS: Watch in release order. It's how it's meant to be viewed.

One thing that Stan Lee pioneered is the shared universe. When he was put in charge, superheroes started showing up in each other's books. He also helped invent the "hero with problems" concept. Spider-Man is a teen worried about his grades. Stark was a functioning alcoholic (they tended to ignore that in the movies), the Fantastic Four constantly argued with each other, and so on. That made them more relatable.

Mary, you're gonna love this franchise. Just know that different movies can have different "feels". Some are more dramatic/heavy, some are comedic and really funny, some are more epic with high stakes, some will make you "ugly cry", etc. And don't worry about unresolved story lines. A lot of these characters overlap into the other movies about different superheroes. So, for example, whatever you're thinking about Tony Stark and Pepper Potts...there are more movies with both of them in it, so you'll just have to wait and see what happens with "their story". Enjoy! :)

Man, people like to rag on Marvel for being formulaic or cookie-cutter - but they did so much in the way of bringing comics to the mainstream, and so much more beyond that. The things the franchise did for a dozen different (mostly arbitrary) categories is insane. Dr Strange's contribution to psychedelic visuals alone is something I barely can get over, it's just so gorgeous to look at and then you have to consider the tasteful power spike characters get? Insane movies with completely bonkers talent behind the scenes. The casting director herself is such a force to recon with, Sarah Finn and her crew has chosen some unbelievably charismatic and fitting people to match hundreds of established roles. Origin stories, progressions, crossovers... it's easy to fall into the fanboy trap for sure, but for my money, there is no movie or TV series that is as consistently entertaining as the what, two dozen movies now? The immediate comparison for me is James Bond, and boy does James Bond have some questionable movie making practices in store for us. There's been nothing like that, and somehow it's just the beginning of what good creative management can do to niche entertainment. Seth Rogen (and this doesn't have to be about graphic novels/comic books only) is another great example of great teams bringing interesting source material to the screen, The Boys was amazing and comics as source material are a treasure trove of inspiration. I think people are also needlessly cynical about the presentation to begin with: turning panels into movies is amazing because someone already storyboarded everything for you. Still needs a bunch of work, sure, but why wouldn't you try and go with the established pacing and visual reference material, at least where possible? Just a bit of a rant, I think people outside of the "marvl gud"-bubble with their respective annoyances at overzealous fans are (understandably) quick to dismiss everything for C-grade action shlock, when I really feel like most of the movies contribute a huge array of interesting movie-making techniques as well as compelling narratives. And they're not perfect either, but who would want that to begin with?

Yinsen pulled what is known as a “Leroy Jenkins”. Normally this results in a massive loss of life for the person and their allies. This is one of the rare occasions where it actually worked. PS Loved the Pokémon music during the escape scene. 😊

Hey, Marijchu! Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! "Iron Man" is the kick-off to a spectacular cinematic journey that altered the industry paradigm. The MCU is a series of 20+ interrelated films culminating in a huge 2-part movie event! The movies are all based on Marvel Comics characters who were co-created beginning in 1961 by editor/writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. Unlike other comic universes, the Marvel Universe is set in our world with many of the principals residing in New York City. What is distinctive about the Marvel pantheon is that the characters all have feet of clay; they struggle to measure up to the burden of power. Stan, Jack and artist Don Heck introduced Iron Man in 1963 in the anthology title "Tales of Suspense" expressly modeling the character on Howard Hughes and deliberately going against the anti-establishment grain of the '60's by making him a capitalist arms dealer. Insulated by wealth and ego, the epiphany he experiences and the life-threatening wound he incurs as a result of his captivity made him vulnerable and relatable to a readership predisposed to mistrusting a quintessential captain of industry. Moreover, Tony, in the comics, is also humanized by being an inveterate alcoholic which is barely alluded to in the films. The trick worked and the dichotomy hooked readers. Reframing his captors from Vietnamese Communist guerrillas in the comics to Afghan Islamicist mujahideen, the first Iron Man film adapts Tony's origin and the "Iron Monger" story arc. Iron Man was a second tier Marvel character known famously for his extravagant wealth and his endless struggle with alcoholism. Jon Favreau was an indie writer/director with one mainstream comedy hit, "Elf", under his belt. Robert Downey, Jr. was a respected former Brat Packer whose bankable days were behind him and who was then known more for drug addiction, womanizing and a motor mouth. This film should not have worked. After an aborted attempt at a shared universe with the Hulk in 2003 directed by serious auteur Ang Lee, Marvel threw the dice with Tony Stark and improbably won! It was kismet. Very rarely does an actor so ideally match a role. Downey, Jr. was BORN to play Tony Stark. His arc in the MCU is one of the best character developments I've ever seen in cinema. Remember Yinsen's last words, "Don't waste your life.", because Stark never forgets them. The cast is excellent. To support RDJ, Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges was brought aboard as Obadiah Stane setting a precedent of enlisting top-tier talent for MCU films. Gwyneth Paltrow as Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, Terrence Howard as Lt. Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, Paul Bettany as disembodied JARVIS and director Jon Favreau himself as Harold 'Happy' Hogan round out the Stark stable. Shaun Toub is affecting as Stark's savior Yinsen and Faran Tahir brings gravitas as Ten Rings terrorist Raza. Unflappable Clark Gregg introduces SHIELD as Agent Phil Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson makes his first appearance as Director Nick Fury. Leslie Bibb has a bit part as ambitious journalist Christine Everhart as does Tim Guinee as USAF Major Allen. TRIVIA: 1. As a tribute to Howard Hughes, who served as a template for both Howard and Tony Stark, production was based in the former Hughes Company soundstages in Playa Vista. Tony's garage/lab is the area where Hughes assembled the H-4 Hercules airplane aka 'The Spruce Goose'. EASTER EGGS: 1. The Ten Rings terrorist organization refers to the ten alien rings worn by traditional Stark nemesis, The Mandarin, who is showcased later in the saga. 2. Former child actor Peter Billingsley from "A Christmas Story" plays the technician chewed out by Stane who returns with a grievance against Stark Industries in "Spider-Man: Far From Home"! 3. JARVIS is an acronym for 'Just A Rather Very Intelligent System'! The namesake for Tony's operating system is the human butler who looked after him as a child and who serves the Avengers in the comics: Edwin Jarvis. Mr. Jarvis plays a significant role in the TV series "Agent Carter" portrayed by James D'Arcy. 4. If viewed chronologically, then these are the second appearances of Coulson and Fury in the saga. CAMEO: 1. Co-creator STAN LEE shows up in every Marvel movie for a Hitchcock-style CAMEO! In "Iron Man", he's the elderly gent in the smoking jacket with his arms around two nubile blondes who gets mistaken for Hugh Hefner by Tony on the red carpet! Lol. END-CREDIT SCENE: 1. Almost all Marvel movies have multiple bonus scenes during and after the credits. The "Iron Man" end-credit scene shows Nick Fury approach Tony Stark about the Avenger Initiative. The next chronological stop in the MCU is "Iron Man 2" and its companion One-Shot "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" found on DPlus.

When this came out, Robert Downey Jr. had been given up on by Hollywood. He was basically the Charlie Sheen of his era. Between the booze and cocaine, they were kinda done with him, even though he had already won major awards in the past (especially an Oscar for "Chaplin"). He had gotten clean, but nobody knew. This brought his career back. And him playing a booze-swilling sarcastic playboy who learns what his purpose is, was actually kind of true-to-life.

The music playing when he first makes the ironman suit is a track from the band Black Sabbath called ironman . Which was made in 1970 and was originally nothing to do with the movie or the comic book character. The song was originally about a time traveller who saw the destruction of mankind in the future and returned to the past and created an ironman suit to save mankind but in doing so he didn't realise that by him creating the suit was the cause of mankind's destruction. He was the one who destroyed the world.

Tales of Suspense was a comicbook in 1963. Everyone should be glad for its existence. It was the first appearance of Tony Stark. With Marvel, the characters origins are typically paramount to who they are and why they are motivated to do what they do, and they're almost always flawed in some way. This is why they take the time to focus on the origins and don't just drop them in already existing. Because they are great stories.
