In this video I review the 3 types of hiatal hernias we see in the clinic and the protocol we use to fully handle it.
There is a great deal of confusion in the medical community regarding hiatal hernia and the result is that patients are suffering needlessly.
If you've been diagnosed with acid reflux, GERD, panic attacks, heart palpitations and more, you'll learn a lot in this video.
Should you know someone with these symptoms please share this video with them.
There truly is hope to remedy this problem without drugs or surgery.
Contact us for a consultation.

Quite literally everything she describes is what I’ve had going on for half a decade. I can even remember exactly when my hernia first pushed through, caused me to black out while behind the wheel of a car on the freeway. Luckily I came back to it before any tragic events happened. And you are spot on about it being misdiagnosed and dismissed. I’m currently on 3mg of klonopin a day. 3 freaking mg!!!!! And you can’t just come off this stuff. Your body becomes addicted to it. So not only do I have the hernia issue to deal with, at some point I have to ween myself off that benzo, which in and of itself is hell. I’m blown away hearing someone actually say what I’m dealing with. Almost in tears. It’s been so hard. So damn hard. So many doctors. Cardiologist found nothing wrong. He was the one who said it was most likely a hernia. He pressed just below my sternum and it triggered a panic attack. Right in front of him. Jesus.

This video is amazing! Thank YOU For validating people with hernias even if they are small. My Dr told me my 2cm hernia wouldnt cause any of my symptoms like anxiety/panic attacks, chest pain and tightness so I felt defeated and that there was something else really wrong with me. I so wish I had a good Dr. like you in my small town. You're amazing!

Thank you soo much, once more, Dr Petersen. You actually described my symptoms! I have been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia back in 2018 and my gastroenterologist never told me that it could be causing all of my symptoms like shortness of breath, heart palpitations and pain, stomach pain, anxiety, etc. You are the best!

Hi, I suffered this for 29 years, I use to feel dying everyday. I was diagnosed of chronic depression, gastritis, got medication and nothing works, lately I developed anxiety or panic attacks, I also have heart palpitations every day and feeling tired even I just woke up in the morning. I was diagnosed of hiatal hernia in 2019 but was not informed that it could cause all these symptoms. Recently I took time to listen to the symptoms and I Google about hernia. I get the feeling that I suffer all these because of hernia. I kept on seeking information and I came across your page and everything you said match my situation. My GP made an appointment for me to the specialist for further medical treatment. I want it fixed, I suffered for most of my youthful years. Thank you for your valuable information

I had my gall bladder removed too for no reason 10 months ago. They said this will make your gut feel better. I had 1 stone and some sludge. Also had egd and they said your intestines are angry but didn't tell me what to do about it. After that I have a greater distrust of medical professionals. It wasn'ttoo great before when I was very healthy.. I was told I have a small hernia and just diagnosed myself before ant doctor that I have lpr. Daily throatburn a white tongue, red eyes, dry nose, my ears sometimes itch/hurt, my lips sometimesburn too. Dr. Says take 40 mg of ppi. I didn't have heartburn until I tried that. I couldn't tolerate that after 3 weeks had to wean myself off of that. Since then changed diet, lost 20 pounds, weigh 124 at 5-3". Eat only ph 5 plus foods. But still have anxiety brain fog and depression. Some days feel hopeless. Saw a surgeon but he wasn't very experienced or positive. Now am hoping to find a gasto specialist surgeon. I feel like there is constant pressure in my chest/lung area, like there's a band around me. Feels like my les valve just stays open cause it doesn't Matter if I eat or don't eat. I feel this burn. I stopped at your video and am very interested. I can't tolerate ppis. The only med I am on in amitriptylin for anxiety. I used to be a singer but don't have the good lungs to sing like I used to. I lose my voice just talking to people. This is a horrible disease and so many people suffer in silence and confusion.

This is the first time I've heard someone describe my symptoms, after spending hours scouring Google and finding nothing. I'd like to add one more symptom that's by far the most serious and one I never hear mentioned. Insomnia. I haven't slept properly for 6 years and this is adversely affecting my health: insulin resistance, gut problems ect. No sleeping pill or relaxation technique works (trust me, I've tried them all!) The hiatus hernia basically traps air in my stomach, keeping me from sleeping deeply and making me wake up many times in the night. I also find it difficult to breathe deeply. Such a relief to have someone take this seriously. I thought I was going mad.

Omg aside from dealing with Diverticulitis too often this year. I have had a mass on the LUQ sort of under my rib cage. I get it from eating. Even a small amount of food I feel the mass which I assumed was stuck food. I even had my previous dr feel it and she noted as a large firm mass LUQ. But bc the CT scan with contrast showed nothing after I had to clean myself out, there was no meal to be had to show the mass. Maybe it’s really a hiatal hernia. I also have woken up choking for years but no dr believes me accept to give me 40 mg Omeprazole and 40mg Famotadine prescriptions. And the breathing issues is real. I thought my Covid vaccine caused some issue but again, you have shared such great info. My pulse often goes up beyond what’s normal and I used to always stay within typical range. You are a blessing. Now to figure out how to find a dr to believe you and believe me!!!!!!

I have just come across your videos and this is the first one I have watched. I am a pretty healthy and fit 63 year old woman. My weight is healthy and I have always been into healthy eating. I developed a strange cough a few years ago and after so many tests for various things, it was diagnosed as silent reflux. I have almost never had heartburn symptoms. Last week I had a gastroscopy as I was having some swallowing issues.. felt as if there was a lump in my throat. The sensations comes and goes. During the gastroscopy procedure the consultant pointed out that I had a sliding hiatus hernia. It was measured as 1.5cm. He suggested afterwards that I take famotidine (an H2 blocker) as I do not want to take PPI's. To be honest I would prefer to take something that was not a drug as they come with so many side effects and there was a recent scare of them causing cancer. I am no doctor of course but an intelligent woman and whilst I cannot see how I could improve my diet any more... I am pretty tired of the feeling of fullness and a swollen abdomen when I eat small meals. I have also noticed that I get a cramp in my diaphragm when doing certain exercises and wonder if this is related to the hernia.

Amazing content, I was a pro cyclist in the 80s, I always had to remind myself to breathe. I have never been a good breather and have tried ao many tutorials but its a strange thing that I find myself shallow breathing all the time like its the minimum requirement. In 2008 my job changed to hours and hours of sitting a a photo film editing PC. In 2012 for no reason I started AFIB, over the years I have lost weight, gained weight, changed diets, increased yogurt, cut down on wine, increased wine, rode my bike more, went the gym more and cut it out, tried everything. Been to heart hospital, they measured it over short and long periods of days and weeks. Had just about every type of stress test going. But my AFIB comes often 2-4 days apart and lasts for a day, I get tight nerves all over my upper back and tried vagus nerve and yoga training. I do get a classic stomach extention like as in HH and without warning it can come or go just like that.

I understand your frustration Rick. Unfortunately few doctors understand Hiatal Hernia Syndrome, let alone how best to treat it. It typically does not involve a heart problem despite symptoms of chest pain and rapid heart rate. When it gets severe, I feel like I'm going to pass out and get very anxious. It's very uncomfortable. I mentioned to my doctor that maybe it's my hiatal causing this, and he said he had never heard of that and didn't see why it would happen.

I’ve had all of these symptoms for 4-5 years, and they have progressively gotten worse. Since May 6 of last year I have been in constant pain- brain fog, chest pressure, down 30 pounds from not being able to eat, throat pressure like I’m being choked, heart palpitations (especially when twisting or bending over), I can’t work out bc it sets off panic attacks for no reason whatsoever. I’m so glad I found this video just to validate that I’m not crazy…. Dr’s told me it’s just GERD and Esophagitis and a 3cm hiatal hernia after my endoscopy and that there’s not much to do… I’ve been to the ER 5x bc I thought I was having heart attacks and they’ve told me it’s costochondritis, anxiety, depression and panic attacks. I’ve dealt with anxiety and depression my whole life- this ain’t it. Hopefully I can find something that works for me, bc I’ve been in a dark place for a year, feeling helpless and hopeless 24/7 with no breaks. Hoping there’s light at the end of the tunnel

Finally, thank you. I'm a Camp Fire survivor and have been having shortness of breath for a couple of months. My doctor at first thought it's from the fire and gave me an inhaler. Then my shortness of breath turned into I can't breath, take three steps I'm done. Well I was carrying a laundry basket to our now apartment laundry mat which it was to heavy for me of course, I'm 57 and should not be carrying that, but I did since we have had to relocate to a small apartment since we lost our home in Paradise. Well it's not my lungs, they have been tested, and the inhalers are not helping. Now the purple pill and tums and low carb diet which I do need but nothing is working. I'm getting worse. I now walk bent over because it hurts to straighten up. I have an appointment for complete stomach ultrasound next week, she is checking my liver, gulbladder, pancreas and hopefully for hiatal hernia. I told her that I thought that I have that, but she wasn't happy that I thought that. Not sure why. But I can't live like this. I have three grandkids that I take care of and this is awful. I'm in North Georgia. I'd love to find someone in my area that addresses this. I've been suffering from multiple symptoms from GI, to Cardiac, to neurological for decades. I have had all these symptoms for years. Been to cardiologist, gastroenterologists, neurologists,, etc. Each specialist told me there is nothing to be done. I had my gall bladder removed and hysterectomy, told I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, gasteopaerisis, and also mild hyiatal hernia that they said is not related to any GI issues. I have noticed I sigh all the time and shallow breathing, having major anxiety after I eat anything even though I'm on a strict food eliminating diet. When I eat my heart races sometimes, same when I bend over. I have major food allergies and can only eat small amounts at a time or my heart palates. I also have bulging disks in my neck. Would love for someone to finally give me some healing. Any suggestions on a local Dr. just north of Atlanta?

Thanks for the great explanation. I was recently diagnosed with a small hiatal hernia (1mm). In addition to silent reflux and disphalgia, I also have pain in the lateral sides of my ribcage. Sometimes I feel it may come from the kidneys, but all tests (ultrasound, urinalysis, blood work) is fine. Could the reason for the lateral pain be the hiatal hernia?

I think I'll see my local chiropractor to find out why I have EOE and Acid Reflux. It could be that my back is misaligned and stomach may be out of place. I think these conditions are causing histamine intolerance, chronic gastritis, EOE, resistant hypertension, which I've never had before. Ever since having my daughter years ago, I've never been the same, plus I had 4 epidurals, which messed up my back. 9 years I've suffered. I saw so many MD's that only gave me drug after drug, which made my conditions worse. Just wish my health insurance would cover holistic doctors and chiropractors.

Can surgery also cure this? I have a small hiatal hernia. I suffer from Gerd & LPR, I am short of breath often and my heart beats hard all the time regardless if I eat or not. I can see my chest move and my neck arteries pulsate. If I do eat a large meal it happens ten fold and I used to smoke marijuanna but I've stopped because it would make it worse. My theory behind that is marijuanna relaxes the muscles so I'm guessing if I smoke it relaxes the diaphragm and allows the hernia to push upward more.

Had spinal surgery in 2013, immediate neurogenic bladder. Self cathing is a pain but it was OK at first, after a while I started getting frequent UTIs, even trying to be as sterile as possible. Only other way to empty the bladder is to push down with the diaphragm. Problem is after a few years pushing down, the hiatus apparently expanded so the stomach could then expand upward. I've always had heartburn but it got much worse, taking antacids and acid reducers but still would wake up with acid in the throat and feeling sick. This would come in bouts and it would get better for a while. About a year and a half ago, started having bad abdominal pains, coupled with severe vomiting. I could feel something moving or shifting in the upper abdomen too. The pain was so bad, I went to the ER. They did a cat scan, and gave some sort of IV delivered nsaid for pain. All they told me was that I was constipated and had a lot of backed up stool. I mean this makes sense due to my neurological issues, my system runs slower than normal. Same issue again a few months later, actually this time they mentioned the hiatal hernia, and the imaging report said it was basically about the same as before and not severe. I wish they would have told me about it the first time, they said it was only constipation, they didn't give me the radiologist report from the CT scan the first time.

It was over four months ago, i had a large vitmamin c get stuck in my eosophagus and ended up burning and dissolving there. I couldn't eat solids or anything, as it would get stuck. I became really constipated from not being able to eat properly. About five weeks after I noticed burning in my stomach and reflux. I had to go private because no one would help. I had an upper GI endoscopy got diagnosed with a small cardioesophageal hernia. I was struggling so much with all of this. Just living off shop soups and cheese to get any nutrients. Then about three weeks ago, it got worse and now I cant breathe properly and it's effecting my sleep. That was my only escape and now that's been taken away from me. Literally a couple hours a day or no sleep at all. I was in hospital for a week, as I kept getting non stop spasms in my stomach and was making me even worse. They didn't find anything except slightly high amylese in urine and one abnormal ECG. I know this is my Hernia and they just think I'm crazy 😭 I have already lost one job because of this and I'm going to lose my other one. My body has changed so much and it keeps getting worse and i dont know what to do. My anxiety is sky high non stop. I actually hate life now and wish I wasn't alive, all because of how ill it's making me feel. I cant eat solids, I cant sleep now, I am so weak from not being able to breathe. Dear Dr. Vicki, have you ever seen a patient whose symptoms you describe occurred after recovery from adult Chicken Pox? I had slight GERD back when this happened to me (30 years ago), but I felt my esophagus from that point had been scarred, or something. Thru the years my palpitations would come on around twice a year, but only accompanied by a seeming mild, upper bronchi-tracheal inflammation...lasting 3-7 days. Fatigue always came with it. Within the last year the palpitations are more frequent.

I went to doctor one week later and while inspecting he pressed on my stomach very tightly to check for pain (the line where abdomen starts). From that day onwards i have excess gas, belching and bloating on my stomach. While lying on bed after lunch i get heartburn and shortness of breath. I was also having difficulty swallowing but that is resolved. I am also having chest pain. Could this be related to hiatus hernia. I am having trouble concentrating on my studies. Hi Dr. Can a hiatel hernia cause a heart attack?

Hi Dr. Petersen. Thank you for this video. I was recently diagnosed with a 2cm sliding hiatal hernia. However, I feel pain or pressure on the right side, sort of under the rib cage. Everything I hear says I should feel the pain on the left side. What could this mean? I'm in Virginia. Can you help remotely? Thank you for your time.

Surgery is an option, but not one with the best outcome long-term. It's not that surgery is never an option, but I think you should know your options for a non-surgical longer term solution. If you want assistance, please consider reaching out for a free phone consultation - you can call us at 408-733-0400. We have excellent success and would be delighted to help.

Hello Dr. I just came across your page and I'm happy that you made this video. I was just diagnosed with a mild hiatal hernia, but I have been suffering for over 3 months now. I thought I had heart issues because everytime I eat my heart would beat wayyyyyyy faster. Thank God my heart is fine but my stomach is not and it sucks😩. They put me on Omeprazole for now it's been a week since taking it I don't have regurgitation anymore or acid coming in my throat. But the food stays in my stomach for hours I'm always full while hungry and my heart still palpitates because of that. Is there any additional recommendations that you could offer me please? Thank you

When I try to sleep on my left side I get palpitations that I don't have on the right side. Could this be related to a hiatal hernia?
@DrVikkiPetersen
@DrVikkiPetersen 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it definitely could be. Your stomach is on the left side and lying on that side is perhaps aggravating it. If you'd like our assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. You can call for a free consultation: 408-733-0400. We have a very high success rate and would be delighted to help.

@DrVikkiPetersen
@DrVikkiPetersen 3 жыл бұрын
Potentially yes. It involves getting some testing for you, which is sometimes tricky internationally, but it is getting easier so well worth a try. 10 years of panic attacks is beyond miserable. Let's set up a consultation. The best approach is to reach out via our website: www.RootCauseMedicalClinics.com and sign up for a free consultation. We'd be delighted to help.
