I'm an actor & performed in A Klingon Christmas Carol for 2 years in Chicago. We had in depth language lessons that included pronunciation and grammar. Improvised Star Trek contacted the Klingon Christmas Carol folks when they realized they needed the song translated for a (very funny) podcast episode. The list of translators is included in the "About" section. They in turn got in touch with me since I have the compatible skill set of semi-pro singer & Klingon pronunciation. :)

Hear! Sons of Kahless Hear! Daughters too. The blood of battle washes clean. The Warrior brave and true. We fight, we love, and then we kill. Our lives burn short and bright. Then we die with honor and join our fathers in the Black Fleet where we battle forever, battling on through the Eternal fight.

He decided to teach terrans how to speak klingon, wearing that strange tuxedo or what he calls it... ;-) Anyway, it's great to find other great Klingon musicians web doing really great klingon songs! So when I might do my next project, I will consider adding some nice vocals to my song! Qapla' - From The Real Slim Klenginem!

My fiance, ngabwI', was the 12th or 13th Beginners' Grammarian for the Klingon Language Institute (depending on how you count). He was thrilled with this. He says the pronunciation and grammar are WAAAY better than almost all other examples of spoken Klingon extant. Did you work with a Grammarian? He says this is something "Rich (Qanqor HoD, Capt Krankor) would totally do!" Well done!!!!! {bIngDaq cha' rIlwI'}!

{tI SuD} "green vegetation" - {SuD} is an adjectival verb here. {SuDbogh tI SuD} "the green vegetation which is green" This corresponds to the English version, where it has "the green, green grass".
@ragdyann422
@ragdyann422 11 жыл бұрын
It is a very literal direct translation at that point. The original lyrics for the song were: "Nightly, beside the green, green grass" To remain true to the song, the translators purposefully translated the color into the song twice: "Every night, at the area by the green vegetation that is green" Personally, I found it funny. And I'm pretty sure that was the intention of the translators. They were also aiming to keep the syllables lined up as much as possible & succeeded overall. ~jen u-m.~

Well, that's a very good question, my friend. Allow me to answer! In the Star Trek franchise, the Kilingons are a species and culture that highly value the warrior ideal. Their love of conquest often brings them into conflict with the United Federation of Planets. The creators of the show made up an entire language system for a fictional race. You learn something new every day!

Bing's translator is still learning Klingon and doesn't do so great a job right now. And even if we can get it to speak excellent Klingon, it will never be able to translate a song, keeping rhythm, rhyme, and meter. It's best use right now is for the hilarity of having it translate something and then translating it back.

Years ago the United States Army had long and awkward fire commands for tank crewmen, as a tank commander I thought that Clipped Klingon would be faster. About the time I translated the whole series of fire commands into Clipped Klingon, the US Army came out with "Abbreviated Fire Commands."

These are the KLI's IPA pronounciation, but are inferred from what TKD says. The r is said to be "not like the r in American English" but "lightly trilled or rolled" This implies an alveolar trill. Likewise, D is supposed to be pronounced "between the teeth and the velum" implying retroflex, not alveolar. With q, "the tongue reaches for or touches the uvula" implying uvular, not velar. TKD does say an apostrophe is a glottal stop. So he has described sounds corresponding to those IPA symbols.
