For those that think they could not compete in a match, I would recommend they try cowboy action shooting. It will change your thinking on competition. Just find a club, go and watch. Tell them you would like to try it and they will loan you gear to try it. They guide you every step of the way. You really only compete against yourself for a while. The third time I went I won a beautiful buckle! "Dead Ass Last". Going on two years later I still am very competitive for that position. But, I set my sights on a clean shoot with no misses and no penalties. I just finished my third "clean match". I have several with just one miss. A dead primer in a pistol is frustrating when you are that close to clean, it is counted as a miss. You will see some very interesting cowboy guns and if you ask, many will let you try them. Just some really nice folks.

This, exactly. Like Hickok45, I love everything "Old West." So I joined the SASS and am getting ready for my first CAS competition!! I've slowly acquired all the necessary gear. Can't wait to smell the smoke!! Oh yeah - I'm 74. Same age as Hickok45.

Many people seem to like it, but I have no interest whatsoever in having to bring and shoot four guns. I'd enjoy a single action pistol and bringing just one, but the other pistol, a rifle, a shotgun, and the ammo, plus the costume stuff - that's just too much stuff for me.

Man Hickok, that first minute and a half made me cry. You’ve been a big part of my journey and helped me do great in a firearms sales career for quite some time. Thanks for all the quick wit and everything you’ve done over the years. You oughta whip some old gen 3 and gen 2 glock .40’s out for old times

Listening to Hickok45 Talks in the background while I sort through my ammo and do an inventory count. I've been looking into competition shooting for the same reasons you outlined. It's not that I want to be the best I can be, or be better and compete with others, but I do really enjoy shooting and want to challenge myself.

Yeh, same either way me, with IPSC . Never thought of being the winner. Loved the reloading, and the interesting matches. Remember the “Jungle Run “ matches? The 3 gun. The house clearing, the hostage matches…. I use my box stock Colt Mk IV series 70. I was pretty slow.

Yep, I shared everything that needed to be said on my website when I wasn't able to do so in person (that way, no one had to listen if they didn't want to). It was very important to me really; honestly, a requirement of my associations (some of whom wouldn't listen to me in person).

He might be older than you but you're catching up to him. Do the math. Example: You're 2 and your brother is 4; you're 50 percent of his age. You're 8 and he's 10, you're 80 percent of his age. Just a fact; younger people are catching up on older people. But the end result is always the same.

Sporting Clays is, as they say, "golf with a shotgun". Never the same course week to week, but you always walk away knowing you can do better, planning to do better, and that's what brings you back. Try Sporting Clays and FITASC if you find Trap and Skeet too mechanical and predictable (though they're great for teaching basics).

$30 for ammo on Sunday at the range is cheap fun. Saturdays belong to the kids/wife and you do $10 per week with airgun practice in the back yard. The range fees and travel expenses, you'd have with any other hobby, in one way or another.

I couldn't do competition myself. I'm not a competitive person; one of the reasons I quit playing multiplayer video games years ago.

You don't need to be a competitive person. That's the wrong mindset. I'm not a competitive person either and I competed in IDPA 2 gun; pistol optics and PCC. Don't look at it as competing against others. You will only be disappointed in yourself. Instead you should compete against yourself. Don't worry about how everyone else does. Worry about improving your own skills and improve compete against yourself.

you can do at least half of your realistic defensive practice with .177 lead pellet guns for precision shooting and airsoft for fast draw and rapidfire. 9mm has such low recoil that it does't matter at all for 5m and less shots at fully exposed torsos. Airsoft "cops and robbers" is a blast and can teach you things that cannot be leared with live ammo, very cheaply and safely.

I'm all in for .177 air guns...also do a search for Bob Mundane for fast draw...fastest gun in the world.

I only fire 500 rds of 223 per year and only practice from the weak side shoulder., almost always with the 22lr conversion unit, without the silencer. The "can" makes full bore 223's ever bit as "tame" to use as the 22 unit without the can being mounted. It's been decades since practice from the strong side shoulder made any difference in my hit times. With the pistol, it's not as important to work with the weak hand, cause you dont have to expose all of your torso to fire around the "wrong' side of cover. Such is not the case with a longarm. haven't bothered to own a shotgun in 45 years. I do my normal hunting with a ccw pistol. it's much too easy with a rifle, much less a shotgun. Birds all land and are easily taken with a silenced 22lr pistol. Geese and turkeys are a bit too tough for the 60 or so ft lbs of 22lr power, so I shoot them with the 9mm. A 16 oz silenced 22 and a 16 oz 9mm are less of a carry problem than one .38 K frame, 34 ozs. and offer a lot more fun, plus real testing of my carry ammo on flesh and blood targets.
