Too many people associate guns only with crime and death. Aside from the typical self defense argument (which I wholeheartedly support), guns can be great fun to have a day out shooting with friends and family. @@rickthe533 That's unfortunate, the ammo shortage has been a real pain, especially for new gun owners. As a college student, I was able to save up for my first gun several months before things started going downhill in March last year. When everything began to hit the fan, there wasn't a huge spike yet in ammo sales where I lived, but I knew it was coming, so I bought several boxes. I couldn't get that much because I am on a tight budget as a student, and although I have some reserves for emergency use, It's hard to afford ammo for practice.

A bit of physics here: a large part of what prevents shrapnel from bouncing back at you is the swinging plate absorbs much of the energy/momentum of the bullet and thus it is not reflected back at you. When you shoot the coffin around 8 min in, one soda can bursts. Why? I'll tell you why: it was because that bullet impacted the coffin when the coffin was swinging back at you! All of your other shots impacted the target when it was swinging AWAY from you, which built up the stored momentum in the coffin! When the coffin is moving towards you and the bullet impacts then, the bullet's momentum is met with greater momentum in the opposite direction from the coffin, which mathematically is identical to the bullet impacting a wall that is moving towards you! This might be more intuitive if you imagine a head on collision on the road: if your truck moving 30 mph impacts a stationary truck of equal mass, much of your momentum is absorbed in the collision and the net momentum of the system after the collision is still moving in the direction as your truck was. But if instead you crash into a truck that is also moving 30mph towards you, that is mathematically equivalent to driving your truck impacting an immovable wall! If that truck you hit is now even heavier or faster than your truck, then the net momentum of the system is in the direction of the other truck, meaning you are going to have a bad day when you go from 30mph due east to 10mph due west in milliseconds.

A friend of mine was stationed on Kodiak Island in the 60's. On his day off, he walked up a beach on the bluff. With a .223 he fired into the water at a piece of floating bark, about 30 yards away, shooting down at a 20 or 25 degree angle. After shooting at the bark he got hit in the forehead, and the ricocheted bullet traveled around his skull under the skin and stopped in the back of the skull. He drove himself to the hospital where the Dr. removed the bullet. I saw his scar and have no reason to doubt him.

I never really cared for firearms for the dangers of them, though I was always curious about some of the technical details of them. Now I know target shooting is a lot of fun, and defense of the common people is immensely important. But I just wanted to say that Hickock45 is an incredible teacher. A classic, safety oriented, knowledgeable man that takes a "dangerous" subject and applies common sense and teaches anyone and everyone on the proper practice. It's why a I followed and continue to watch to this day despite not even owning a firearm. He is an example of what the gun community should be about. Many of the comments here are surprisingly (to some communities) are also examples of this as I rarely see hateful and ill tempered comments. They are all about the products, safety and just sharing experiences. We are in a period where there is a divide where more guns means more violence, and less guns means more innocents killed a difficult and seemingly impossible situation to compromise. But that sweet middle ground is people with the respect and knowledge of what he/she is dealing with like a man like this. It's about knowledge and respect towards the risks of the hobby and educating about it. It's not political, it's not race or gender, or any other politics, but about the product and only about the product and expressing safety. Much respect for honest, genuine, channels like this.

And I thought gun control starts with a good sight picture. Oh the pain, the pain. All those years on the range raining, snowing, blistering heat and sand in my crotch.

The practicality of guns is lost on those who were never properly taught. Good teachers make better students.

If the majority were as sensible and decent as this chap then there wouldn't be much of a gun control issue. Sadly it doesn't seem that way considering the gun violence and death statistics. Yes a fair bit down to criminal activity but they get their weapons down to lack of sensible storage for theft and lack of decency in some sellers. Hiscock should absolutely be mandatory viewing for all new gun owners though.

I recently had a piece of a 9mm Bullet fly back and imbed itself in my upper leg. The steel I was shooting at was a swinging type target.

Hickok thank you for posting this video! That helped me by answering so many questions I had about shooting steel. Does one need to worry about the post you put the shepard's hook on? Does it have to me circular or can it be any post?
@hickok458 жыл бұрын
The stand is generally not a problem, except if you are using these for rifle targets (.308, 5.56, etc.) out there at any range, you'll occasionally cut the shepard's hook and have to replace it. Remember, these things are designed for some other silly purpose, such as hanging plants, I guess, so they are not made of hardened steel, of course. A hot rifle round goes through them like butter.

I've been wondering about this subject myself. I made a target from a 1/2" plate and I designed it to hang at a downward angle but I still heard horror stories so I wasn't sure if I wanted to try it out.

Just another thing, don't stand to the side of someone shooting a revolver. Stand behind them. My brother was shooting a 44 Blackhawk and I was standing to the right of him and caught a good size chunk of bullet in the forehead. I bled like I had been shot in the head.

Chuck Sherron thanks, I was of course. It was an old Ruger super Blackhawk with timing issues. I always stand behind anyone shooting a revolver now. It wasn't just normal splatter it was a chunk of lead.

I spent a lot of time on qualification ranges with over 100 people having to do periodic qualifying. So tens and tens of thousands of rounds. Not much really happened but every now and again someone would get hit by some shrapnel. A guy took a 230gr ball .45 in the knuckle on an indoor range with a full angled plate steel and sand bullet trap. Wouldn't have killed him I don't think, it was just uncomfortably lodged in his knuckle, but eyes without glasses would have made for a bad day with it. All we could figure with the .45 was that it caught the target hanger or the edge of the bullet trap plate, just a random thing. Another great video.

when i was training/range officer for my small urban p.d., i got some steel from a friend for targets. he thought he could use them for an h&k rifle he had. Nope, he had holes in his, so I got the left overs. I had a friend bore two holes in the, since they were close to 8x10. I used smooth head lag type bolts to secure them to sign posts, and used a sledge hammer to set them up. I did so at an angle so the target waas angled slightly from the shooter. It looked square but if you got sloppy with the front sight, the shot would slide by. Or The top was angled closer to the shooter slightly, so shots deflected down. Never got splash back. I and a bud were shooting some large steel poppers on another range and we both ruined shirts with holes and bruises on chest/belly from bounce back. Not fun. a .30 carbine solid would dent the steel, and .223 or larger just left a nice clean hole.

I’m setting up a new range and this was very helpful. My Dad used to say “the paper never shoots back” ! 😎 In the 50’-60’s we had a ton of military surplus and I tried to wreck everything. At 70 now, I’m happy to hit the paper and metal piercing isn’t such a big thing 😎

I got hit with a piece of the bullet jacket from a 7.62x54r 180gr heavy ball shooting AR500, but it was due to me shooting it while it was in mid swing, it litteraly slapped it back at me
@genegene0027 жыл бұрын
I have shot 1/2 thick mild steel targets with the 30-06 and 7 mm mag at 100 yards and actually had the hollow back of the jacket fly back aprox 20 yards. I filled in all the craters with weld and ground them smooth and now only use them for lower velocity rounds. Also I do not have them on a pedal stool or platform I am using a 1/2 x 1" flat bar stock and stick them directly into the ground with a slight angle up or down. Note dont use round stock because your target will spin sideways and you will have to keep walking to go fix it. Next on my range I want to make a gong hanging from chains and some hanging plates that rock back when they are hit like you have on the plate rack. Good vid! Very informational and may stop someone from getting hurt!

I definitely feel that guns ricochet more at an angle, such as a rock skipping on water. It wont skip if you throw it straight down.

When I lived in Phoenix, there was a spot just out of the city (west on Bell Rd, past Sun City West) where people had set up all lkinds of stuff to shoot at...boards, old TVs etc. I used to go out there and plink, and I usually used chunks of 2X4s with a point chopped onto one end to pound into the ground. Once I went out there, and someone had set-up a target rack with some swinging plates. WAY more fun! They just left it there, it was obviously home-made, 1/2" rebar and round steel plates on bent strap-steel 'hooks'. Whoever you are, if you read this, thank you!
