We were taught to use the FORS method to adjusting sights in the Army Infantry. Here's how it works: F---front O---opposite R---rear S---same If you're going to adjust your sights, start at the rear since it's less confusing. You adjust the REAR sight the SAME way you want to bring the rounds to match your point of aim (POA). So if your point of impact (POI) is high, bring your rear sight DOWN, and see if your new POA matches your new POI. It's simple...if you're adjusting only your rear sight. Sight down to impact down. Clear as mud? Hahaha. It's actually quite easy once you start throwing lead downrange...

Can you please explain how it's the opposite for the front sight? Lets say I line my sights up and I shoot and hit left, now, doing the opposite with the front which would be right, I would then have to aim the gun further left to line the sights up again, would this not worsen them problem?

Shooting High: Adjust rear sight DOWN. Shooting Low: Adjust rear sight UP. Shooting Left: Adjust rear sight to the RIGHT. Shooting Right: Adjust rear sight to the LEFT. The basic understanding is the 3 parts of the sight picture which are: 1. Rear sight. 2. Front sight. 3. Target. Presuming the front sight is installed correctly (properly centered), then the adjustments are always made at the rear sight while keeping the sight picture inline with #'s 1, 2 & 3 above so the gun can be accurately adjusted to hit where the point of aim is on the target.

Practice dry firing with snap caps, find the spot where the trigger breaks you’ll be able to feel a small click there, then see if you can balance a penny on your front sight while you pull the trigger. It’s just about learning how long or short your trigger pull is and understanding the weight of it.

I love all your videos!! I know this is an older video but I always just keep a simple sight rule in my head that makes it simple. Just move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go!! If point of impact is low and you want to shoot higher move the rear sight up,if POI is high and you want to hit lower just bring the rear sight down same with windage. If you want poi to go further right mover rear sight right, Same for going left. Just move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go. Thanks again for all your videos I look forward to all the future vids.

easy rule of thumb: rear site moves in the direction you want your rounds to go. front site moves opposite of where you want your rounds to go. Meaning: your rounds are hitting to the left? move your rear site to the right or move your front site to the left. same applies for up and down.
@hickok45
@hickok45 7 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's pretty simple, except that when it comes time to adjust sights, so many people start asking themselves, "Let's see, I think you move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go, or is the front sight, or do you move the rear sight in the opposite direction?" :-)

i notice almost all beginners think they are moving the actual barrel when they adjust the front sights. so they wind up doing the opposite of what they should do when they adjust there sights. for some reason its so hard for them to understand all they have to do is just adjust the sights to where the bullets are hitting. instead they adjust the sights to where they want the bullet to hit. i hope that made sense.

With iron sights, it's always easier for me to use the opposite language that you use: If the gun is shooting low I want the barrel to be pointing HIGHER, so if I raise the rear sight I'll have to lift up the front of the barrel to align the sights, and so, with the same (correct) sight picture, the barrel will be pointing higher. For some reason, when I'm thinking about scopes, the language you use is best, IMO: move the sight to where the bullet hit. If you have a gun vise you can use that technique directly to sight in a scope with one shot: aim at bullseye; note where shot actually hit; put gun in vise and adjust to aim at bullseye; then adjust crosshairs to aim where bullet ACTUALLY hit. One shot, and you're right on (at least at that distance -- IF your gun vise really holds the gun steady).

GetMeThere1 I understand completely having be shooting and adjusting similarly. That said I’m not sure a total novice could understand your explanation. Perhaps a drawing illustrating the visual line of sight and one of the bullet trajectory would be easier to understand. ---mikey

thanks for this. It's easy to get confused. If you have trouble, try putting your thumbs in line with one about four or five inches in front of the other. Cover the front w/ the rear, and think about how moving the back one a little bit to the left or right means the front one has to shift to line back up. I know it sounds silly, but it worked for me. Thanks again, Hickok.

@hickok45
@hickok45 8 жыл бұрын
+Ryk E Lee That's the problem; new shooters, or even senile old shooters, forget which way to move the sight or which sight to move in the direction you want the impact to move. Let's see, was it the FRONT sight you move in the direction you want the impact to move or was it the REAR sight? For experienced shooters, it seems pretty basic, but it's a little like how some people get confused about the time change. That's the reason I tried to get the concept across, even if I belabored it a bit too much, that however you move the sights and whatever sort of sights you have, and whatever line you are trying to remember, like the good one you mention, basically, you just need to do whatever it takes to get your sights pointed at where the bullet is hitting. On lots of old military rifles, for example, you have to move the front sight if you want to adjust windage; cannot even move the rear sight.

David Maximus, watch his video again. You are backward. Go try your method, you'll quickly learn. FYI, I just picked up a M&P Shield 2.0. It's hitting slightly right at 7 yards, was a few inches more right at 15 yards. It is off enough that I'd be missing in a bowling pin match. Thier owners manual says to NOT MOVE THE REAR SIGHT. So, I ordered a sight adjustment tool, rather inexpensive at $39. I'm trying to move my front sight to the right so my bullets will come left. The sight is very tight, hasn't moved yet, and I feel like I'm cranking pretty hard on the wrench. So now I'm soaking the sight in oil, as per the tool instructions. We'll see if I can get it to move in a few hours... wish me luck! (Sorry for my ramble...) Hickok45, your shooting is amazing. I love it when you hit that gong on the far side of the hill with a pistol! Wow, just noticed this is a 2011 video. And yet, still relevant and excellent advice today, May of 2018!

@PappaKnowsBest, That is easier, except people will then question themselves when they've not done it for a long time. They'll say, "Let's see, you move the sight in the direction you want the point of impact to move, or is the opposite of that, or is that just for the front sight if it's adjustable?" That's why I don't even think about all that; if I know the result must be that I have to get the sights aligned with the hits, I'm good. :-)

Hi, Hickok. Love your videos. They are, by far, the best on the subject of firearms on KZbin. On this video, however, I think you made the subject overly complicated and may have confused some viewers on the subject. I think there are three takeaways on this subject. 1- Don't change your point of aim unnecessarily to compensate for misaligned sights. 2- When "testing" the alignment of your sights, hold on the same point of aim or target. 3- Make sight alignment changes by moving the rear sight in the direction you want the bullets to go. For example, if your bullets are hitting below the target, move the rear sights higher since you want your bullets to hit higher. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Thank you, Mr. Hickok. I added finally an M&P Shield 9mm last year and had always shot left and low whereas before with my Springfield XD9 and Beretta PX4 Storm I shot pretty much 'right on'. Went shooting with two LEOs (one an instructor retired from the military and DEA) and another 'marksman' friend and they routinely said it was my pull. Granted they shoot a gazillion times more than me and and of course only my Shield with me as I was carrying it. I have pretty much ruled out the trigger pull and even had the trigger on the Shield polished down to a sweet 5 lb pull. What you have shared now has gotten me thinking more the sight adjustments which I felt all along. I'll be shooting in the next few days and ready to pinpoint where my left and low issues are coming from with more accuracy and precision. You are a great instructor indeed!

+Bruce Silverman thanks, Bruce. I've already done the same for each gun as always as you've said. I got a little paranoid when these men kept saying it was my trigger pull and in all honesty, the Shield has been my least familiar Gun since I only had it for a few months. Of course due to their dramatically more required range time all around I took what they shared to heart. Heck, my former DEA agent friend missed a few rounds and his experience making an adjustment was much quicker. I only wished I had my other handguns with me at the time so I could actually tell if it was the Shield which really had less than 150 rounds fired so it had not even been broken in to me let alone me having gotten used to it. All three carried an impressive arsenal right it their trunks. I've shot all my life, but my first time shooting a sing,e stack. The grip is naturally strange feeling to me also of course, but I'm always open to the opinions of others with more experience. Thanks!

I've always remembered it by saying move the sight in the direction the hits need to move. If you're hitting left, the hits need to move right, so move the rear sight right. Thanks for all your great videos... when I'm bored at work or can't go shooting for whatever reason, I just watch some Hickok videos. It's the next best thing to being at the range myself.

I don't understand why don't you have a school to train so many ppl that need training, yeah videos are ok, etc but in person training is key, proper fundamentals, technique, grip, stance, styles, right hand, left hand, cover, no cover, kneeling, prone, sitting etc. You have countless of youtube fans, I could imagine if you took your ideas, training on the road you'll be even more famous and wealthy but then again u provide an excellent service and I like others appreciate "ALL" that u do. TY~!

I think a lot of shooters assume they know how to aim a gun, especially ones new to firearms. As in most things...........there are basics that all must be covered for understanding and beginning of a greater awareness. Thank you for posting this instructional video. I really learned a lot how to adjust the sites. Now I know how to adjust the factory sites. I have a couple laser sites for my weapon and couldn't get it zeroed in. Now I know what I need to do to make sure the factory sites are properly set before adjusting the laser. Very informative and im looking forward to the next target shoot so that I can get both zeroed in. Thanks so much

I really enjoy your work here. I bought my Taurus PT111 G2 after watching your review, and I haven't regretted it for a second. Thank you! A quick comment about terminology as I watch this video. I grew up with the terms "how to aim" (your sight picture) and "where to aim" (where to hold the sight picture). Mentioning this synonymous terminology might help disambiguate your "where to hold" comments for viewers that might be confused (as you mention in this video). FWIW Thanks again for the great videos.

Brother Hickok, where did mostly 10 years go. I was "only" 56 back then. Startin to feel, at that time, over 30yrs of bein trauma and cancer magnet but while I mite mention my injuries and as of now 30 surgeries and nuther cancer episode since then, I will never complain. Not with millions worse off than me. BUT this last 10 years has aged me at least 25 years. It dawned on me couple weeks ago that best possible prognosis is maybe 10 more years of doin some of the things I'm good at and do the things I just enjoy. Immediate family, riden Harleys. A "Bad Boy" Springer softtail and what I used to refer to as a "grandpa" bike, an Ultra Classic. Still got hot rods, like the 1,300hp old Pro Street Corvette and a few semi exotics. Will I even be able to drive in 10 more years or even want to. I didn't mention shooting my weapons because just shooting for the sheer joy of it has been beatin out of me ny havin to use weapons or have them on me every day of my life and everywhere I was authorized to do so and many places I wernt. Cause that's where sheite happens. Well, PTSD and me been up goin on 3 days and stopped by here for refresher course. Seems like my gun and medic skills are still runnin on good muscle memory but havin to actually bear down and think about something as basic as sight adjustment can get me flustered. Have at least 5 AR pistols and carbines that need sighted in and several handguns but it makes me tired just thinkin about it. 10 years ago I could shoot safely in my backyard. Now rural ain't as rural as it was so have to load everything up and go somewhere to shoot. Also seems like constantly havin to requalify for for an agency or certain license. Still lot of training to go thru or doin the teaching and havin to go thru 3 translators to get simple messages across. Of course theres the constant concern about our country and our constitutional rights. All of em are under attack and we got snookered and now too late to circle the wagons. It's comin on to "Broken Arrow" time. Glad nobody will read this. Seems this damn tablet is the only thing I "talk" to anymore. Super glad you're still sharing your knowledge and insights. Hope you got at least 30 more years. It could happen. Protecting diplomats and high value clients you hear some strange things that, of course, you can't repeat but as someone who has volunteered for some "experimental" medical treatments it's unbelievable what could be helping millions but for whatever reason it's not available. Population control, I guess. I'm living proof of miracles and medical marvels. Too bad I'm not needed very much at 66 and really need a few more miracles. Oh, yeah, that thot that occurred to me: barring some miracles or mystery treatments, I'm out of time. The hundreds of ideas and inventions are gonna die with me. Not gonna write that book about my near death experiences. Surviving terrible injuries. Drowning and right before I breathed the water I thot the colors on the water above me was the most beautiful thing my teenage self had ever seen. Fear was gone. Woke up during the CPR portion of church summer camp at Fall Creek Falls. I'll delete this drivel maybe after I get some sleep. Hopefully. Ya'll take care and keep ur powder dry. One parting thot: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing". Edmund Burke

30 surgeries? Geez, that give new meaning to "Life isn't Fair." I've had a couple, but I've mostly escaped dealing with medical issues and hospitals through my life. We all just take our health too much for granted.

@@hickok45 True that, Sir and thanks very much for the reply. Pretty sure all of your viewers appreciate you takin the time to read and reply, when you can. Many of the surgeries were the "day" kind. Lot of knee scope procedures and such......I know this ain't interesting but fraid I mighta painted too bleak of a picture....but i have been "put under" I think, 12 or 14 times. Supposedly the more times you are put under in general anaesthesia the more dangerous it is but that may just be an "odds" thing also. Suprisingly my work in LE, as EMT or corpsman, private security contracting ot close type personal protection, all the things involving weapons and the actual use of them. Puttin out rounds and bein shot at have been the least harmful to me. Well, at the time. The worst the surgery to remove R kidney, two ribs and tumor. Reattaching wrist joint , twice and one finger were not easy. Cancer on L bicep in '13 was and just because of "C' word. The others kinda blur together. Like every picture, every scar tells a story. Our mental scars, stories we usually cannot share. The added up pressure waves I've caught, especially in full size MICH helmets, have not helped my mental status, vision, headaches and some sound frequencies don't get thru like that used to. We wear the high cut helmets now, mainly to mount stuff on or just wear ball caps or that scarf thing I can't spell. I got hundreds of ideas and inventions but most, if not all will die with me. Sad, not because of possible money made but because most involve officer and soldier safety, weapon mods, emergency vehicle mods. Even emergency medicine techniques. So here's a simple one, maybe two, that someone needs to do. In my humble opinion. You know that mount on the front of the helmets for night vision but mostly Go Pros? How bout takin ball caps and makin just the bill to mount in there. Keep sun off our faces, keep glare off our shades and ballistic glasses and goggles. But mostly help keep rain off of our prescription glasses with a seal against the helmet. I'm thinkin low investment/good return. Speakin of our high dollar shades and prescription glasses both sun and moon....how bout an indestructible case to store them in with an optional clamp for mounting on motorcycles. Forearms: Have talked to a couple of companies that could make this with equipment already on hand. Police, military and civilians now have access to great, affordable body armor. Torso, arms, legs, GROIN, skull buckets. Now picture all that and what area is completely exposed unless your behind a 20lb ballistic shield while aiming your weapon of war AR-14, JOE B edition. Your support hand either on handguards, mag well, or vertical grip. The other unprotected area, mostly is from rim of helmet above your eyebrows down to bout your nose and really your lower face, trigger hand, everything behind the business end of the weapon. How many folks have taken hits to their support hand and or face because naturally most enemy combatants are aiming at your weapon and decision maker. SO, how about this: Start with industrial strength forward grip. In front of it attaching to base of grip by couple of rods angled upward a bit and with enough room for your hand. At the handguard bottom it splits and goes up each side with a couple of strong mounting on top and maybe side rails with opening in the middle for iron sigt view or electronic scopes. Now what do you see? A simple shrunk version of the hundreds of shields mounted on military vehicles with a big 50 or M60 pokin thru it. Of course some super strong but light as possible metal or carbon fiber would be used and the angle mount is to deflect, in theory, the round upward. Trying to totally stop a round would be unlikely, I think, and the device would add too much weight. Entry teams would probly like em. Keep it small enough to not interfere with other equipment. Could serve as a bipod, mount a light on it. Batteries in the grip. So what ya'll think. If I ever get to meet ya'll I'll try to type up a few pages of these ideas and maybe yall, if interested can reach out to the right folks. Hearin from me usually involves "And your are'? I don't want anything. Would I TAKE a little something? If i want to keep livin here with my toys, eatin good food and my clothes are always clean. Wife would at least wound me. She is not a gun free zone. Got two young granddaughters and while they already own several collector cars leavin a trust fund would be super. I'll quit sharin now even tho i forgot to put the best weapon one one here. Thanks again for your kid reply, you're definitely a "Gentleman and a scholar". As the hordes of invaders from Siberia yelled in around 1200ad while spanking the Roman empire, "Yol Bolsun" May there be a road. Means different things to different folks, I guess, but I like the sound i can imagine a thousand mounted Mongels, horses, not Harleys, yelling as one to onevlone horseman they respected and let leave their camp knowing at daylight they would attacking the merchant caravan. Few in the caravan would survive and hundreds of the tribesmen would die. Oops. Forgot to just say thanks. Just returned from a doctor visit. Tests were good and cancer not back. They think. Cancer is evil....and tricky. So didn't try to turn down the PTSD, not the crippling kind, well I think I have bored some folks to sleep and maybe fell over. NEVER talk to me while you're driving. I'm blessed beyond measure, not deserved, to still be here and I sincerely hope the blessings ya'll need show up. You don't recognize em at first sometimes but they're out there. rick, in SE Tennessee. (Hey, I think I have almost a twin to your Trap Door 45-70 and 34-40 Krag. Also inherited a possible 1700's long gun that must have been built for your ancestors. It's nearly 5 feet tall. Still have leather pouch and powder horn with it. Even has a set trigger. I'm descended from early Spec Ops sniper. "rick, shut the hell up". Ok, The End.

Right...where you want it to go. Rear sites are more intuitive IMO. Hitting left? move rear sight to right to bring the POI into the sight picture...POA. Most handguns use adj. rear sight these days. What used to drive me crazy was adjusting carbines both Rear and Front. That is until some told me about F.O.R.S. mentioned in previous posts. GREAT TOPIC! THANKS HICKOK45!

@27Turo Thanks for your reply, it clears things up a bit. My "argument" mainly pertains to optics though. The center of the crosshair is the point of impact of the bullet, so I always thought "if a gun is shooting right of the target, you need to adjust the scope to the left. To dial it in so to speak. My dad still bags his deer, and he's a good shot, so he must be doing something right, but in all those years we never settled on the matter.

New gun owner myself. Just hit the range a few days ago. next week I will pace myself and try to accurately sight my gun. Currently using a 9mm S&W MP 3.6" compact. The indoor range has a maximum yardage of 60 I think. My aim isn't great as I'm new (and I don't think my gun is sighted yet), but I got 85% of my shots to hit inside the circles at 3.3 yards.

Not confusing to me ... thanks for the instruction. I had to get enough practice in on my new handgun to know whether or not my technique was good and that none of the inaccuracies were due to technique and not to my gun. Now that that's OK, I need to focus in on the hand gun .... I think it will only need a small adjustment to make it perfect.
