My personal friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson, once wrote in his "Self Reliance" essay, "whoso would be a man must be a non-conformist." Whenever we'd have drinks together, he'd mention that "imitation is suicide" if I ordered the same drink he was having. I learned a lot from this old guy, mainly that others don't necessarily have all the answers, even if they seem smart, dress well, and speak in lovely time-honored platitudes. :-) I really miss Ralph, as well as his friend Henry.

Thanks, but be careful what you wish for! In a "TV show" I'd have to do what everybody else does: short 10-second segments of dramatic and / or unnatural voice. The next time you're watching a "Reality Show," ask yourself if that is the way people actually talk when you drop in to a pawn shop, gun shop, etc. Little unnatural statements that are obviously set up and rehearsed are what I see. It's pretty obvious. I'd miss just talking about the guns the way I want.
@JohnFourtyTwo4 жыл бұрын
I can't stand reality shows or so-called "unscripted" shows because they are scripted or the shows would be of people barely talking and walking around so they have to prompt them to say and do stuff, all I ask for is for them to ask real questions and engage in conversations that's on their level, not an Ivy League professor.

For me, the AK is a bit more of a chore to clean thoroughly. Yeah, the AK might continue operating longer without cleaning, but that doesn't mean much to me. I'm not going to "not clean" any firearm I own just because it might not malfunction. So what if it will continue to function (probably) even as rust and crud continues to build up. I'd rather not have that in a gun I pay good money for and intend to keep almost like new for decades. :-)

Personally, since I will be cleaning the rifle long before it's going to get dirty enough to cause malfunctions, I'd rather have too much oil, I guess, if I'm going to err in one direction or the other. Wear / damage of metal parts from the friction of under oiling cannot really be undone, whereas, no matter how dirty my well lubed AR gets, I can clean it up to new condition pretty easily.
@albertforletta14983 жыл бұрын
I am 60 years old. For the last 46 years, I have been over lubing all of my firearms. I never had a misfire or a malfunction caused by too much oil. I recently watched 2 guys on a KZbin channel submerse multiple firearms in tubs of oil. All the firearms continued to fire perfectly while splashing oil on the shooters. None of my firearms have rust on them, and I will continue to over lube all my firearms. Thank you!! I enjoy watching all your videos.

Well, you CAN constantly clean it and "keep it wet" as Hickok put it, OR, you can just run it totally dry like it was designed to be run, as it's a self-lubricating design with carbon being the lubricant. Lube plus carbon makes sludge - which must be constantly cleaned. If you run it dry, the carbon stays powder-like, and you have yourself a carbon-lubed system. Hickok seems to be more of a pistol guy. His method of maintaining his AR-15 does work, so you can do it either way. The AR-15 is either no manual lubing of the BCG (with periodic inspection to remove any carbon caking), or constant lubing and cleaning of the BCG. The choice is entirely up to your discretion, but pick one, and stick with it. Heck, if you're rich enough to have 2 AR-15s, try one method on one, and the other method on the other one. One totally dry, the other totally wet.

I've never loaded military rounds. One of the attractions for me early on to the military calibers was the availability of surplus ammo. Even though it might not appear that way in the videos, I shoot way more volume of handgun ammo than rifle ammo, so I concentrate my reloading endeavors in that area.

it is relaxing. The other day i had to do a general (key word) cleaning on the units C7's (canada, but still an AR) i swear this one....oh boy, someone F****D up the bolt face was literally blue in what i assume is rust. about an hour later i finished scraping all the S*** off. and moved towards the upper... (laugh at me now) the barrel is blue. out comes a new bottle of CLP and down the barrel it goes. I plugged the mussle and let it soak for about 20 min then spent the rest of the day doing pull throughs with the brass brush. a week later said C7 was sent to a weapon tech and sent to the grave yard. the weapon was in service scince 1984, and destroyed by one dude who forgot to cover it up in the rain.

The only real way to clean the bolt on these guns is with an ultrasonic cleaner cause of all the s all spaces and ports. If you let it get dirty and don't clean it for a while the carbon will harden and has to be scraped and picked loose in hard to reach spots. The more oil you run in them the more they will collect gunk. I'm no fan of direct impingement.

FELLOW AMERICAN GUN OWNERS, I have talked to many shooters that had occasional malfunctions after cleaning and storage and did not know the real cause! Be aware that gun oil CAN AND WILL seep into your ammo primers. I have known people that have sprayed their guns and magazines with aerosol gun oil before storage then had dead ammo or worse, super weak powder and bullets lodged in the barrel because the burn was so weak. How bad would it suck to reach for your rifle in an emergency and pull the trigger on dead ammo? Lube your guns but keep the ammo clean. No one talks about this.
@hickok457 жыл бұрын
Yes, you want to keep oil off your ammo; however, years ago I did some testing of that. I sprayed down ammo with all sorts of lubricant and let it soak. I even submerged a bunch of reloads and factory loads in a jar full of WD-40 for weeks. Every one of those rounds fired except one handload. I was totally surprised.
@indy16987 жыл бұрын
It was the Browning spray gun oil that caused my problem. I coated a Hungarian PA 63 with it because I leave it in a humid location (workshop garage)and it was rusting a little. It sat for several months loaded after I sprayed it down, and I decided to empty the magazine and pull off the rounds real fast. When it stopped shooting I started looking for the problem. It actually had two rounds lodged in the barrel and the third one wouldn't chamber.!!! I am guessing the primers were igniting yet the rest of the powder was polluted and wet. Exact same thing happened to a buddy of mine. Doing storage and soaking his loaded revolver. (He swore it was the ammo until I ask him about using spray oil on the entire gun)...Now I keep the handgun in a ziplock bag and the ammo in another seperate ziplock bag lol! It was the same Browning green and yellow can of spray that he used too.

James DF785 If the lube is non-ionic, it will not attract dust and crud. Furthermore, most spray lubes flat out direct you to "saturate all internal and external parts". If worst comes to worst, you can always just wipe off anything still soaked.

@@brianbkaraoke This is good stuff. They didn't give us any graphite, just GI CLP. We sprayed it on, and wiped it clean as good as we could. Didn't seem to give any problems, but I wasn't an "operator". Just a guy with a wrench and an A2 to help me sleep at night.

Don't you use some consistent grease after cleaning your bolt carrier group, smthg like Ballistol gun Vaseline? It's good to put it in thin layer on high friction parts. Vaseline (or any other consistent grease) just stays where you put it, it doesn't burn out and vapour like oils during shooting However, I took this from Reid' Henricks Valour Rigde videos (he shown it on his AK bolt and bolt carr example) Thank you for your amazing videos!!

The only "bad" thing that can happen from having an excess of oil is that extra carbon/gunk will build up because it will bond with the oil and stick. So as long as you dont mind cleaning your weapon, you're golden. (With most weapons)

Yes but Hoppe's #9 can not only clean your rifle but you can use it as aftershave. Nothing smells like your gun room wafting the wonderful scent of Hoppe's # 9. Used it for 50 years and counting. Used LSA and bore cleaner in the Marine Corps, And actually boiled my M16 in a drum of water and spic n span getting ready for the Colonels junk on the bunk inspections. Bottom line, a clean rifle is a happy rifle regardless of what you use. Never neglect it, it is your best friend.

You are outstanding sir, Thank you for your knowledge I appreciate your work. I’ve been looking to purchasing a Core15 riffle but have not seen any profesional reviews like yours for that company. I know they are a Veterans run and veterans own the company. Is there a possibility or any way that you can please do a review of their Ar15 5.56 riffles sometime. Would love to see an honest review sir. Happy New Year to you and your family and thank you for your time. Semper Fidelis Sir !!

I recently drank the AR koolade and bought one to add to my firearm collection. Having a blast learning about it and developing quite a new respect for the 5.56 ammo. Your video was a very helpful instruction on how to take apart the bolt assembly. Surprisingly similar to the gas systems on my shotguns. Same concept I mean. Thanks again!

Just like You said, there are seasoned shooters and there are also many new guys in the field. Thank You for making it easy, and explaining how and why for everyone looking for answers. Your channel is making a lot of good for all shooters, starting from very important basic safety rules, cleaning, maintenance and ending with reviews of fascinating guns, squib loads, and guns shooting from an open bolt, also making ranges a safer place. Keep up the good work, I always enjoy Your updates. PS. Like somebody said here, You are like a Dad to my guns if I need an advice on a subject, I start from looking here and I have never been disappointed.

Cut my teeth with handguns at 56....2 yrs ago...watching Hickok of course and other YT greats and going to range weekly, THOUSANDS of rounds...10s of thousands of dry fires, and countless draws from appendix...a half dozen handguns in my collection, even learning how to gunsmith too. Love it. Now rifles pique my curiosity. Fixing to pull the trigger on my first rifle, especially now with BETO's (and the Dems) talk of banning ARs/AK's. Idiot.
@hickok455 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the politicians talking right now about confiscating semi-auto rifles are probably increasing the number of them in civilian hands by another million or two. They might win some of those "sales awards" that Obama and Clinton won a few years back. If their plan is to put lots of additional firearms into people's hands and to stimulate the firearms industry, they are achieving their goal. :-)

Be careful with Q tips. I almost had one break off inside the gas key. That would be a pain to get out. Same with the gas tube. I couldn't imagine getting one stuck in there. Turns a 30 min cleaning job to a 1 hour pain in the ass

Dirtkid98505 Oh, yeah, they dominate: feed jams, gas pressure failure, gas ring failure, extractor failure, gas tube melt, "pin walk", cleaning patch decimation, cleaner/ lube consumption, and the realm of special maintenance tools requirement in spades! I have both, sorry, the AK-74 rules.
@Dirtkid9850510 жыл бұрын
Ronald Wells Have had AR's all my life and have had minimum failures ie cheap magazines. I also like being able to hit targets at 400+ yards with the same rifle used in CQB engagements, when's the last time you saw an AK at any 3 gun competitions. Ergonomic, light weight, light round( don't tell me it can't stop a person it's not a .30 carbine), balanced, availability of rifles, ammo, variations, and parts in western hemisphere and NATO nations, not reliant on imported ammo ( recent case: surplus 5.45, 7N6, was just banned from import) accessories and quick change out! right choice for US citizens. Only way I'd take an AK over an AR is if I could get an original. And I'm not comparing it to soldiers in Afghanistan, because this isn't Afghanistan it's the US. And I am talking about for civilian use and market. Hell yeah if I was going into combat with supplied ammo I would take a AK74(standard, M, Krink, or 105) any day.

Just get a 6.8 mm Ar and get more than double the Kinetic energy of the 5.56 like 7.62 and still less recoil and same accuracy. And for reliability keep it clean or get a piston driven one. More customizable too.
