An example: taking 2 months of a say...6 year psychology course for whatever... Those 2 months were spent absorbing building blocks to which are meant to gather future information. To take those building blocks and put together your own "knowledge" would be as destructive as it was productive. Not only will that understanding lead to significant misunderstanding, it will create confusion that feels like confidence. Applying that to this, you have a clue but not an understanding; which leads you to blow your index finger off.

For one thing, you don't HAVE to be a "great" shooter to really enjoy the shooting hobby. There are lots of people who can shoot better than I do, but I enjoy shooting it just as much as they do, probably even more. Good vid. May I second you on "Read the stamping on the barrel?" Some time ago I bought a gun which I understood to be a 44-40. I spent quite a while finding cartridges for it, and was thinking I'd most likely have to get into hand loading to feed it. Finally got it out the range and found 2 things. 1) it was very inaccurate, and 2) it jammed a lot. Took it to a more knowledgeable friend of mine, who was thinking the jams were maybe some roughness on the chamber walls. We examined the spend casings and what was wrong occurred to us at the same moment. A check of the barrel stampings revealed that it was a .44, not a 44-40.It chambered fine, but when fired the necked down 44-40 case was getting flattened out against the .44 chamber walls, making it stick. And the undersized round was bouncing down the barrel a bit, causing the inaccuracy. No harm was caused, but it was sure embarrassing to realize I could be so negligent.

I always tell people to stay with factory guns and factory ammo, and if you reload?, only shoot your reloads. I don't trust other people's reloads. Short story, I once picked up a live round off the ground at a shooting range and fired it in my S&W model 15, I had to tap the cylinder out with a plastic hammer, and later I learned that the frame of the gun had been Stretched!!!. I got the gun back to where it would work but it never was the same ): I filed this under Mistakes I Have Made, it's a pretty large file too ): ?

This reminds me of a story I read on Gunboards, a guy was shooting his SVT and a mosin shooter offered him some ammo. The guy didn't know what issue could be had and so he did so. Both guns shoot the same ammo and so he thought it should be fine. Well, that round blew the gas well off the barrel, sent the bolt back with such force that it cracked the bolt carrier and bent back the metal of the area of the bolt carrier slides on. Moral of the story, don't trust foreign reloads.

Great video. One of the most important bits of information on firearms and shooting. I remember in my gun safety course when I was a kid they taught us about the dreaded 12-20 double fire. When 20 gauge shell gets mixed up with a 12 gauge shells. The 20 is small enough to slide into the barrel just past the chamber and then a 12 gauge gets loaded on top of it and when fired the gun barrel detonates. Several other scenarios where the wrong ammo is used and the end result is injury or death to the shooter. I really appreciate the old school good advice you give to young shooters.

I once went to the range to shoot my beautiful old Steyr SL in .222 Rem Magnum. I shot twice and felt that something wasn't quite right, but I wasn't sure what it was. I load both .223, and .222 Rem Mag. cartridges, and was putting them in the same blue ammo boxes. Even though they were clearly labeled as .223 for my AR's, I just grabbed the wrong ones. The two extracted cases had almost no neck. I was tremendously embarrassed and felt very lucky that I hadn't damaged myself or the rifle. After that stupid move, I bought red cases for the Magnums, and haven't come close to making the same mistake again. I think (and cringe) about it every time I reload, and I keep those two cases on my loading bench to be a constant reminder.

U actually made it as far as opening the box?? I dont care where Im buying ammo or whos selling it to me, the first thing I do is look at the box to make sure they actually handed me what I asked for. Then I open at least one of the boxes just to make sure visually. Even small differences, like if its WW 115gr when I asked for 147gr(my carry ammo). Hollow points vs ball. Brass vs aluminum case. A lot of ammo manufacturers' use identical looking boxes with the only difference being whats type printed regarding bullet weight and type and case material.

Plus, he had a table full of mostly rifles that had busted apart, when people used the wrong ammunition, or clogged the barrel with mud. A couple of the shotguns, had barrels, that were NOT only split apart, but also had a few squiggles in the steel barrels. ...... The NRA teacher said, most of the accidents occurred because the men were hunting with John BarleyCorn. (A famous man back in the hills of Tennessee.)

I just want to say thank you for your channel. I would like to say I'm not a beginner when it comes to firearms but I also like to learn as much as possible. I can't remember exactly how I came across this channel but I'm glad I did. I currently work at a small gun shop part time in Alabama and aside from learning hands on, I always like to learn new things about firearms and see reviews from those who actually know what they're talking about. Now I wouldn't be the one to try to shoot a 556 out of a 223 but nonetheless I enjoy watching. Hope you and your crew have a Merry Christmas!

Good video! About the .38 special into .357 magnum revolver that works fine, don't fire a .357 mag thru a .38 spec for the power factor (might not fit). Be aware of +P ratings of your gun too. Maybe a small video on the +P world might be a good follow up! I can't help but wonder if this ammo shortage hasn't made shooters searching for other cheaper options in ammo?

I'm glad you made this video, because this could be a serious issue with some people, myself included with regard to .223's and 5.56 rounds for different guns because I really don't know much about rifles. The golden rule is this: if you don't know, ask. Gun stores are a lot like gyms, in that you should always ask if you don't know, because if you do something though guesswork you could end up seriously hurt, and in both places people are a lot more friendly than you may initially think, and are happy to share info

Don't let them fool you. The 223 and the 5.56 NATO is the same round. The difference is 223 is the civilian moniker and 5.56 NATO is the military moniker. Ammo companies try to convince people there two different types of rounds to make more money. The only thing you really need to worry about is don't use any rounds that are marked +p in guns not rated for it. Especially older guns. The +p may Break the firing mechanism.

Wow, this is giving me heartburn right now. I just picked up a 1920 Colt 38 Police Positive and am having grave doubts as to whether it's made for 38 Special, 38 Long Colt or maybe Short Colt, or 38 Smith and Wesson. It just says 38 on the barrel. And I can't find any of these at a LGS (except Special, of course) to just try chambering a round. Thanks, Colt.

Yes I insist especially because this video was and is for complete gun ignorants just like you said and as you know as a gun person, firearms are anal in the very core the way weapons and ammunition are made just like hickok45 explained on the video. Exact measurements and anal tolerances. Me personally made a mistake once loading a custom, Mosin-actioned hunting rifle, with a Sako .308 barrel, with .311 caliber 200gr old Finnish military warloads. Full house charge. The rifle fed them just fine but the recoil was a bit stout to say the least and I couldn't hit a broad side of a barn. I checked the brass and noticed the primers were cratering heavily and stopped. I KNEW the difference of a .308 and a .311 bullets but the fact simply didn't cross my mind that the barrel actually said .308 as Mosin's are typically between .310 and .312 except Finnish models M27 and M28. So even the tiniest measurements in high power rifles can make a world of difference. So I admit, I am anal.. :D Btw. nice word that "anal"..xD

This is a good video! My Local stores including gun stores as well as larger sporting goods stores both do not do good training for the staff who sells the guns- ive found that they never show you how to operate the gun, or show you basics such as loading and unloading it as well as ever discussing the ammo- ive purchased several guns both used and new and not once have i had a salesman even attempt to give me basic education. I had this issue with a classic Winchester lever action thats 30 30. And i nearly purchased 30-06 thinking it would work- and im now also dealing with this becasue i got a Ubertti colt clone thats a .45 and im wondering if i can use 45 long colt- and im wondering if 200 or slightly over 200 grain is too hot for it or can it handle it- i hate that there is a lack of educated salespeople as well as poorly illustrated operation manuals which seem to not discuss this subject of different ammo and especially the grain strength of the ammo the gun is designed for.

Yeah it happens quite a bit some people it blows the chamber for example only use 5.56 under 62 grain in a .223 chamber because 62 and up are special ammos and could jam and go off in body because they are too long to work with the free bore and by go off i mean jam in the barrel and the second’ll detonate in the gun as a squib load type situation.

@TheJohn8765
@TheJohn8765 8 жыл бұрын
+fasfan It doesn't help that even identical cartridges have different pressures and some frames marked "44 blah blah" will shoot normal, but aren't rated for +P stuff. Similarly, the continual confusion around .223/5.56 pressures... The gun industry needs a better model for "robustness".
@fasfan
@fasfan 8 жыл бұрын
TheJohn8765 I hear ya. I agree. That's why I said "when in doubt: Don't" But there is a MOUNTAIN of confusing information out there. I've seen many people for instance, claiming it makes no difference between .223 and 5.56mm because they are the same now. Maybe a better thing would be: "When in doubt, refer to the manual and/or contact the firearm manufacturer."

Ive heard the .223/5.56 info both ways. They may be almost completely identical but pressures come into play. I tell people to play it safe, if it says 5.56, it will shoot both. If it says .223, stick with .223.
