I bought the beautiful Ruger 57 because it is one of the safest pistols in the word. It is NOT fully cocked when the slide is racked; pulling the light trigger finishes the cocking and lets the internal HAMMER fall on the waiting firing pin. The ambi manual safeties are useful for UTTER safety, but can be ignored too. The high velocity round has very little rise and fall, plus little wind drift, so it is very easy to shoot accurately, not to mention the light recoil for staying on target. The cartridge also has little ability to over-penetrate either; it dumps all of its velocity energy almost instantly, without much left to escape the target...........................elsullo

My brother gave up his .45 for the 5.7 after he was injured in Iraq in 2004. His war injuries would not allow recoil any longer. FN 5.7 and its negligible recoil is his go to if needed, though his desire to shoot much any more has waned post Iraq. Nadal Hassan used the 5.7 in the Ft. Hood massacre.

A buddy of mine got one when it first came out. He also found some of the original military rounds. These rounds would go through multiple Kevlar vests, much better than 7.63x25. While vaporizing cans of soda, we noticed that it wasn't penetrating some of the cans. We found a can with the bullet sitting in the exploded can in reloadable condition. This ammunition was quickly prohibited, but with the penetration and hydro shock was unbelievable. I still have the bullet and the rifling is clear. Comparison to 22 WMR is ridiculous.

I don't have enough knowledge to know whether I agree with you that the comparison to 22 Magnum is silly or not. On the face of it, velocity and bullet weight are indeed similar, at least for standard loadings of the 5.7. But it's hard for me to believe that FN would go to all the trouble of designing this thing and come up with anything even vaguely similar to a 22 Magnum!

@jwchenard19 күн бұрын
If you want to get nerdy, it's important to note that the energy of the projectile is proportional to the square of the speed. Therefore, a 1600 ft per second round has about 75% more energy than a 1200 ft per second round, assuming the same weight bullet, even though it's going only 33 percent faster. Some 5.7 ammo can go 2400 ft per second or more. Such a round would have four times as much energy as the same slug at 1,200 ft per second.
@xckk58499 күн бұрын
It's also important to not that the energy of the projectile is mostly irrelevant in handguns, especially if the round passes through. Momentum has more of an impact on the ability to interrupt an attack and speed is linear there.

I’ve had one since 04, and carried it on occasions I prefer a smaller micro 9 for comfort but I’ve found myself in areas that having a 20 round magazine and a back up 30 round magazine is preferred. If you are going to carry one as a self defense weapon do not carry the blue tip FN ammo or hollow points the round does not have enough mass to make it effective as a an expanding round the American eagle fmj are known to tumble in soft targets similar to the 5.56 55 grain fmj and this makes them more effective than the very limited expansion and energy transfer of the hp rounds. They also more effective at penetrating cover and while not AP rounds they have a better chance against level 3 soft armor.

In my opinion, it’s very very good for what is supposed to do. It was created to perform the same if not better than 9mm with more benefits. Which it does exactly that. The bullet is going faster, delivering more shock and can even penetrate enough to rip through the spine and essential organs with a good shot placement. Not to mention, it’s light, guns usually hold 15+. Expensive but that’s what you get with the gun world 💯
@HPDrifter29 күн бұрын
Hmmm, interesting comments. My opinion... caliber in a handgun is almost unimportant - within reason (.25 auto need not apply...) - what's important with a handgun is hitting what you're shooting at, which most handgunners are very poor at. Hitting your target is a matter of many hours and thousands of rounds of practice. Most handgunners would be more effective spending their money on range fees, ammo, and targets than a different handgun.

22TCM is a great cartridge, but Armscor have not yet certified it with SAAMI so it remains proprietary. Which mean they're the only source. If you can get it, that's OK - but what if Armscor doesn't market to your area? Then you have to buy it online. 22 TCM has great performance, but I wish Armscor had made the OAL just a bit longer, to enable the round to employ spitzer or pointed bullets. The current design over-all length is too short to permit that with any real success. Besides the impressive performance, the 22 TCM also has something else going for it: It is relatively easy to reload once you acquire the right shape/profile bullets. The FN 5.7x28, on the other hand, is a pain in the neck to reload thanks to its polymer coating, small dimensions and other characteristics. It can done, but it isn't easy and isn't really worth the time. You've never seen muzzle blast like the huge fireball that comes out of a M1911-style handgun chambered for 22 TCM - wow! Visible from outer space, most-likely....

Why is .22 Hornet never compared?
@TwentyTwoSigma9 күн бұрын
There's reasons. #1, most people can't even find it, and just don't care for it. It's just like 21sharp. No one cares for a more expensive .22 round that barely edges it out in accuracy compared to LR. The only thing it has going is extreme speed so it will edge out LR in penetration.
@vinceparke57408 күн бұрын
@@TwentyTwoSigma It still seems it should've been more developed and consequently more common than 5.7. At 3000 fps comparing it to LR is nonsensical.

.22 Hornet is a nice centerfire round. It retains its popularity in the smallbore class of IHMSA Silhouette.

Personally speaking, I own a Ruger 57. Same cartridge, same capacity, about half the price of an FN 5.7.

50 round of 40gr of Federal costs 73 bucks here, that's not only hurting the one you're shooting at.

I have only had 2. Accurate but not much else. Fun yes but it just didn't impress me. May be good for small game but not much else.
@bluntman420ification9 күн бұрын
Yes very much so is overrated on small game and stuff like that probably a nice cartridge but in most of the testing that I've seen it's not any more impressive than 9 mm
@GeorgiaBoy19617 күн бұрын
Strictly in kinetic energy terms, 5.7x28 mostly clocks in around 380 Auto territory in terms of performance, in other words not even up to 9mm Luger levels out of a handgun. Obviously, it depends on the load - but most of the really hot performers in 5.7x28 are available to military and LE only. 380 Auto/9mm Short performance isn't terrible, but neither is it world-beating. FN designed the 5.7x28 as a dedicated CQB cartridge for use with their FN P90 PDW, and in response to a NATO request for a possible replacement for 9x19mm. Using military-spec loads it is capable of penetrating soft body armor, which is one of the design goals it had to meet. However, in civilian-legal loads, it is mostly a fun small game/varmint cartridge, for plinking/target work, and with HP loads for personal protection. Those 35-45 grain bullets dump velocity quickly, and once that velocity is fully-shed, you're looking at something on par with 22 rimfire. This cartridge works best at close range. In other words, you are right!

The only herstal I ever tried was completely inaccurate and unimpressive and that’s a compliment to what it actually was. A 509 you couldn’t reliably hit a refrigerator with at 20 paces and I can put 8 rounds in a 2” circle with a tiny ruger lc9 so it ain’t me.

Didnt even watch the video the answer is YES! both the FN 5.7 and the round itself is over rated by fan boys! Out of a pistol its no more than a varmint round! And an expensive one at that!

Looks like the performance of a .223, considering the barrel length.
@ryanranard51873 күн бұрын
Yes, it’s overrated. It’s nice if you like really high capacity with an extremely light gun. Ballistically it’s meh. Not as good as the more popular calibers.
