Rainy day but I did get to saw some hickory boards on the woodmizer.

My favorite hardwood floor is hickory. I once had a farmhouse with hickory hardwood.... the random dark areas make it so unique. I miss that floor... I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Good work George. We've never sawn hickory but have put in hickory cabinets...had to drill the screw holes a little bigger than usual and coat the screws with soap to get them to drive in...tough stuff!

When Mom and Dad built their house in the early 2000's there was a Shagbark Hickory right in the middle of the house foot print. The builder took most of the wood but made a very nice 8X10X6 ft fireplace mantle out of some of the wood. I have a nice 70 foot Shagbark right of the deck about four feet out.

Would make a great mantel, good for posts indoors as well. I'm going to try making a cutting board with some.

Good video George. A little trivia on how the Shag Bark Hickory got its name. It's called that because the bark is shaggy. Go figure. Dave

And pig nut hickory, wait maybe I don't want to know that one...

Hey George, what blades were you using on that hickory? Maybe more importantly, what’s your opinion on performance?
@mcsawmill8 ай бұрын
That blade is a resharp 747, it's 7deg .045 thick. It cuts small hardwood logs really well.

have a question how do you know the difference between a softwood and a hardwood by looking at a tree
@mcsawmill8 ай бұрын
Softwood trees have needles instead of leaves or are evergreens.

Oh, if you meant me specifically, I have an app on my phone. 😂

I almost cried when you decided not to go with crotch figure.
@mcsawmill8 ай бұрын
lol.. there was no crotch figure in that log, it was just a Y...

why don't you get in contact with the people who make axe handles? see if they are interested in the hickory for their hands
@mcsawmill7 ай бұрын
That's a good idea except I'm a hobbyist not a production mill so my volume wouldn't be sufficient. But it also made me think I could make a few handles for things I have in the garage. Good project for middle of the winter! Thanks!
