This is the first time that I have attempted end grain bowl turning. It took twice as long and kept blunting my tools.
I'm very happy with the result, but won't be rushing to try another end grain project again so soon!

I took a class when I first stared turning. I practiced a bit, but then after a couple months got busy with other things. When I got back I forgot one cruicial bit of wood placement and, as a result, only did end grain turning. I got quite good at it before watching videos (I think one was yours) and realizing I was doing it wrong. I haven't done an end grain in a while now. I may today though. Now, it's time to get into the shop and turn!!!!

I've made 500+ bowls and this was the first time end grain turning. Took twice as long and had to sharpen my tools at least 10 times! Hope your next bowl turns out well.

Well done. You did the outside top to bottom to reduce tear out. Good on you. The inside you also turned top to bottom. To cut with the grain you should have been cutting center to outside/bottom to top. Always the opposite to the outside. Good looking bowl in the end. Always a win.

Yes the outside worked really well. On the inside I expected to cut from the middle to the outside, but it actually created more tear, which was very strange. Outside to middle worked surprisingly well, perhaps it was aided by bevel rub or something? A few shear cuts to finish definitely helped though. Either way, I'm going to avoid end grain for as long as possible, as that bowl took 7+ hours to turn, which is double what I expected! 🙂👍

@@RDMWoodturning there you go. I was told WAY back that there are definite rules to turning, but don’t let them stop you. Sometimes the rules are meant to be broken.

Ash has been the toughest for my gouges also, even struggled using carbide tips. Your end result is well worth the effort though, very nice 👍

Hi. What did you use for the cracks? You can give a link to the store

I used CA Glue (super glue) and an activator spray. I tend to use Starbond, but other brands are very good too.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJy9lZ6jfZWNirc I'd recommend watching this video from Kent, as he explains it very well (about 1 minute in). There is also a great video here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKC9e6ODhq-EY9U In essence you always need supported grain cuts to avoid tear out. Hope that helps.
