I was inspired while watching a series on cable tv to turn this shape.
Made from Red Cedar but the original shapes were made from clay.
My friend Josh sent the wood to me.

Thank you Travis. I have surf fished along our coast here in Oregon. But I always did better in our boat in the ocean off the Columbia River for salmon. Did real good at what they call Bouy 10. If you look that up you will see it is a very popular place to fish. Kind of a mad house so if the ocean was calm we always went across the bar. That boat has been sold for many years but I still have the driftboat. Thanks for watching, Gary

That is without a doubt the prettiest Red Cedar vessel (vase?) I have ever seen, Gary. Terrific job of turning that shape, my friend. Awesome finish on it, as well. Great video, my friend. Take care, .....Gord

Thanks Gord! I loved making this piece. That shape really caught my attention and I just had to do it. Not a perfect match but the thing of it is when these were first made none of them probably matched. All from clay and had to be done by hand. I think like all the things we do the shape kind of develops with help from the grain and color in the wood. Well I already belong to a band called the B' Sides. Bunch of old guys who grrew up on fold music. I am a bit older than them and I grew up loving surf and rock. They let me play both of those now and then LOL. See ya, Gary

Classic shape.... LOVE it! Eastern red cedar is actually a Juniper-- misnamed as a cedar. It can also be toxic to humans if we eat it. Nonetheless, it is great to see a chunk of Eastern wood find its way into the hands of a master way out on the West coast.

Yerba mate cups as well as yerba mate have fascinated me since I was a kid.. Yerba mate is made from an Illex species similar to our Illex vomitoria.. I have toasted our Illex leaves and made my own yerba mate. I grew up drinking very strong ice tea here in Texas and found yerba mate to be similar. Your cup is beautiful. The wood reminds me of the Juniperus virginiana, Eastern Red Cedar, that grows just east of us here. I have made cups for my granddaughters out of Juniperus ashei that grows in our area and west in the hills. That wood is not as red, but beautiful as well. Sorry to be so long winded. Your cup just got me fired up. Thanks for the fun.

Thanks so much Mark. Yes I am sure it smelled great and many have mentioned that. Sadly they think it was an infection but back in 2006 I lost all my sense of smell. Over the years some has come back but not enough to enjoy those smell. Early on in my pattern making career we used Sugar Pine. Wow that stuff smelled good. You would get used to it but then after the weekend when you came back to work it was very strong again. Visitors to the shop said it smelled like a bakery. Now if someone has very strong perfume on I can tell but it actually burns more than smells. Thanks for watching, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 Sorry to hear that Gary. I have a similar issue having lost a great deal of my sense of smell due to Covid a couple years ago. Not totally gone, just greatly diminished.

Very nice, Gary! Lovely little cup, or mug, or vessel, or chalice, or... whatever.. I, too, have an idea for turning something based on an old form; just have to work up the nerve to give it a go, as it will be in 2, if not 3, pieces. Wes @ Piedra Designs
