best explanation of adjustments on this little carb. when removing the barrel throttle there is a small bushing (1.0-1.5mm) that will fall out. It goes on the small pin in the side of the bore and makes the barrel cam up as the throttle opens. If the barrel doesn't rise in the bore as the throttle opens, check for missing bushing. Thanks for the information.

Plastic caps on carb adjustment. Thank EPA, in the early 80's when most cars had carbs, EPA mandated restricting access to the adjustments which was in some cases a hardened steel cap over the idle mixture screw. It was a lot more fun to get it out. Be glad these plugs are plastic.

By far the best instructional vid I have viewed regarding these little carbs... very well detailed and shot, dony. I have been watching your work for years and can't thank-you enough for your work! Just a quick note for American viewers regarding those little black plastic plugs. They are apparently required to be in place if you are a 'pro' adjuster or you can be fined...this does not apply to homeowners, just business people. Thank-you, dony! You are first-rate!

Omg I am working on an echo weed eater identical to the one in the video right now. I cleaned the carb and it did not solve the problem ( bogging when throttling up)so instead of gambling on the kit solving the problem, I just ordered a replacement carb. Wish I would have seen this video before I ordered it. I had no idea that the carb had any adjustments nor did I know about the tiny jet inside the little brass thing on the side. Thanks for a great tutorial!

This video saved me a trip to the Echo dealer---I installed an after market new carburetor ($14.00) and still would not run up to full speed. Made the adjustment noted in this video on the high speed jet and it works just like new---the aftermarket carb did not have the plastic plugs to prevent adjustment thank goodness.

Thankyou for this information. I never knew about this tool or plastic cap over the screws. After learning this I got very angry due to two workshops lying to my face.... Back in 2003 I purchased a rather expensive brush cutter that would never run right and needed to be returned often back to the shop I purchased it from. After the third month of ownership and constant breakdowns they started to charge me a service fee. I lost my temper with everything and just put the machine away for years. Years later I went to another workshop to get answers on why this machine was behaving so badly and they said like the original place purchased the device from the carburettor is "self adjusting" and nothing to tune. Ok sure I purchased a brand new carburettor from them and again the same bullshit all over again. So I just gave up with this unit and went 36v electric. I now find out there were adjustments and never needed to buy a carburettor at all. I felt I'm surrounded by thieving bustards and can't trust my local repair shops. Iv been tuning my own carburettors since I was a teenager and this damn thing had me beat. Once again thankyou for the information and help me solving this twenty year mystery

Great video Don I've done all sorts of work to saw carbs, drilling air bleeds, adding H needle to 3120xp, using micro drills to drill jets etc. But I've really learned something here today, the only zamma barrel carbs I have are on 2 Makita 231T (23cc top handles). And I just thought they were fixed jet carbs. I can't wait to now be able to do some tuning. Great video.

Wow this was a awesome video to come across. I like your tips a lot! I had a question for ya , you said to let the 2stroke motor warm up some before making your adjustments. And that makes sense to me. Should you let 2 stroke equipment warm up at all before regular use? I do with 4 cycle equipment but not to much with 2 cycle. I’m sure you know better than anyone that the newer 2 stroke equipment these day’s seems to have a lot more issue’s than the older stuff. At least in my experience. I’m assuming that little jet you expanded with the micro drill bit has a lot to do with it? I never thought of that or realized that was possible to hone out some. This is the best thing I will see all day on KZbin! Thank you so much for sharing this info! I will definitely be subscribing to this channel. Real quick one more thing if you read these comments or see this. We run Red Max equipment atleast our weed eaters and blower’s. We have newer equipment and it’s usually the stuff that gives us more issues. I have 3 weed eaters that I kept back for my personal use. I like the older one’s. They are from year 2000 and 2001. Hardly ever have any problems with them at all , year after year. On the newer stuff is it because of that carb jet ? The one you drilled out. I’m assuming they try to lean everything out as much as possible for emissions crap so they make them to small and tight from the factory? Am I on the right track there? There are times I might assume someone didn’t mix the oil in the fuel correctly because we might have a few trimmers start running rough around the same time but that same mixture of 2 cycle oil and premium fuel in my older red max trimmers is just fine. Hey thanks again , you are the man!🍻

Before adjusting carb, make sure fuel/oil mix is fresh and correct ratio, filters are clean (air and fuel), and fuel lines are in good shape. Bad crank seals and gaskets will make you chase your tail like a dog with the air leaks that cannot be adjusted out.

When i do a tune on a carb " first i make sure no clogged fuel filter , right mix, plug gap, clean spark arrestor , possible carbon on exhaust port , older equipment" some are gummy bears" run slow allow for heat expansion rev warm " dial in the carb" lastly, weed eaters line at proper length so" under load, braaap braaat" max tune with 91" octane & 3 oz per gal especially being smokeless & ashless , remember when Castrol pre mix smelled almost as good as BBQ
