Today I am going to be walking you through the hidden danger that Marimo Moss Ball plants purchased after February 1, 2021 have been found to be contaminated with. I also go through the different ways the US FWS states are the best ways to destroy & dispose of them to ensure the contamination doesn't spread to waterways.

It blows my mind that you were given such a hard time about this. Zebra muscles are no joke. I wish people could just relax a little when it comes to plants. We all love our plant babies, but sometimes we have to let plants go. It's a natural part of cultivating life in our homes.

I missed the first upload. As a former conservation educator, I'm so upset to hear that the first upload was met with such resistance. Invasive species are SUCH an important topic that people need to take seriously. Humans are responsible for the destruction of so many other species - literal extinctions in addition to environmental devastation - by introducing species to places they're not supposed to be. Thank you Harli for sharing this information with your viewers, and I am sorry for your loss. I hope people who were resisting actually take this seriously. Protecting our waterways and our environment is so much more important than having one of these plants in our homes for our own enjoyment.

This might be a dumb question but I don’t have a moss ball and I’m just curious. Could one just dump the dirty moss water on the ground outside in dirt or on the sidewalk? I don’t see how mollusks could grow there 😅 Obviously the moss balls in an aquarium is a different story but for the people that just wanna keep it in a cup, can’t they just dump the water in the dirt?
@bkrbkrl
@bkrbkrl 2 жыл бұрын
@@suckiiiit9368 Not a dumb question. Yes, that is what could be done, as long as where you dump it cannot wash into a water way. For balls in cups, the best way is to place the ball in it's new cup/container after cleaning/rinsing as you normally would and then microwave the old water they were in/were cleaned/rinsed with until boiling hot and then you can pour it down the drain. I refuse to kill my moss ball just because a government entity thinks that ALL moss balls are a danger or are contaminated. If you keep your moss balls separate you will eventually discover if they are contaminated because the z. mussels will show themselves on the balls or in their containers. Any government entity will always take the easiest route, which is simply to tell everyone to kill their moss balls and ban their import. If others want to do that, that is fine, but I prefer not to. The moss balls left in our possession may be the last we ever get due to the ban, so I am not going to kill mine until I know they are infected.

For anyone who still doesn’t get why zebra mussels are a problem, they don’t just cause harm to ecosystems and environments. They can literally slice you open, to the point of needing stitches. I got a cut from one in between my toes, they couldn’t do stitches because of the small space so it was super glued shut. Please take this seriously, and stop hating on Harli for spreading proper information.

I HATE that she has to do this... I've noticed a lot of KZbinrs have had to do this with a lot of their videos. When did society forget that it's okay for people to have different opinions and experiences? It's pretty shitty that a lot of people on here have nothing better to do with their time, than to troll and leave nasty comments on videos. The content creators are spending their time, money and energy making informative videos for us. I was taught, if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing. Harli, we love you, and thank you for everything you do.

I wish she was one of my little sisters. She is so sensitive to her followers, and I appreciate that. I just wish everyone could. She could have sponsorships for every video! Probably 2 or 3. But some heifers got their thongs in a snit so she literally takes a cut in pay! If they don't like what she does why waste their time watching her videos?

I had maaad respect for the environmental part you put in the beginning. People brag about being eco friendly while they're still slacking in a lot of basic places. Your decision is your decision and I'd politely tell the others to "**** off". Another thing is the people who are "farmer using synthetic fertilizers/pesticides on their land" without considering runoff and contamination. I also see people who get so emotionally distraught when i throw dead plants away at my garden center and ask if they can take it home and I say "no the soil is contaminated and i need to stop the spread of mealy bugs" but they want to PROUDLY say "I'll save even the smallest plants if you cant take care of them" as they fish them from the trash. They act like they're better than me but I'm like "I'll sacrifice the small ones for the rest of them" and that usually shuts them up
@CyanidePusher
@CyanidePusher 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no, I'm feeling attacked 😂😂😂 I used to be one of those people who would be like "Let me rescue the plant! I am good at getting rid of pests and bringing back the dead!" I want to say I never thought I was better than the greenhouse people, just that I knew that they had too much work to do and no time to save the plants unlike me, who has no life and all the time in the world. But I'll keep it 100% - you're absolutely right in that it is actually ridiculous 😂😂 I maybe saved like two, the rest either died on their own or spread their pests and took a few good plants with them. And just to be clear, I wasn't like scrounging garbages at random greenhouses, I'd only ask if it was a place I frequented that knew me AND if I was also already making a purchase. I'm not an animal lol

Yep, the larval form of zebra mussels is microscopic. That's why they've been an issue spreading through bilge water from boats. After seeing them in one of my local riverways a few days ago and getting super upset about it, thank you for this video. They're awful little buggers - they hurt like heck to step on, too! I heard about this awhile ago through some aquarium groups I've been in, but it's nice to see a PlantTuber with a significant following addressing the issue

I barely know anything about plants or moss balls or anything like that, but all I have to say is you're very strong. It's clear that these were important to you, but you still did what you had to in order to protect the ecosystems around you. It takes a brave person to do that.

I’m glad all of my moss balls are several years old! I also use my aquarium water for my plants so the water never goes down my drain anyways.

Yes I’ve been looking at buying them for years and have now seen all the stores saying they’ve tested for muscles and I’ve never been convinced about their testing abilities 👀👀. So seeing the government now coming out and saying the tests are lies. Now I guess I’ll have to look for someone who has had them for years and can prove it.

Oh Harli I wanted to cry when you were getting emotional. Our plants are like pets. It’s okay to say goodbye to them, but do not feel guilty at all. You did everything right as you learned what you had to do💛

THANK YOU. I’ve never even heard of zebra mussels before your video. I’ve even had moss balls in my plant aquarium before but don’t have any now. I researched more into this only 30 seconds into your video. Thank you for educating us/me❤️

Harli! Thank you so much for this informative video and leading by example! We have Mother Nature to thank for all the beautiful houseplants that we love and enjoy, so we should do our best to be good stewards of the environment. It may be easy to just ignore situations like this, but thanks for choosing the harder right. Hopefully we can start buying marimo moss balls soon!

Thanks for sharing Harli! Very proactive. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada and a few months ago we got a warning about the moss balls. They were contaminated with invasive snails. We were asked to return them back to where they were bought. Take care ♥️🪴

This is a good example of how other peoples opinions affect a person. Sad how Harli had to get to this point and defend her choices, when everyone is entitled to make their own choice. I’m happy she clapped back at all those individuals. She did in a respectful manner, which speaks volumes! Again, Harli I love your content! Thank you for all the knowledge! It has helped me with my own plants!
