Although scenes may have been deleted due to censorship, I feel that their deletion really helps the whole theme of believing in either a fairytale ending or in the truth, thrusting this decision onto the audience and also allowing for the conversation/debate of what the ending is. (The drama's Weibo made a post saying that they wouldn't comment on what the "true ending" is.) Including the McDonald's scene with Zhang Dongsheng makes it really obvious that Pu Pu died. With Chaoyang practicing holding his breath, I think that it shows how much he yearns for his father's love and approval; he enjoys swimming with his father and they promised to swim across the Pearl River someday. There are just so many details to discuss with this phenomenal drama. I've watched all the bts videos for it, and I love how dedicated the whole team was to produce such an amazing final product. 小演员未来可期!

Another foreshadowing I found in the series.. When they witnessed the murder at the mountain, Pupu suggested they should write a letter to let Zhang Dongsheng know that someone saw him that day and to warn him to never do it again - she has no plan to report him to the police. We can see this happening again at the final episode when Zhu Chaoyang received a letter from Pupu. She told him that she will keep the secret but suggested Chaoyang to tell the truth and start over.

(There are spoilers in this if you haven't finished the show) I downloaded the QIY app at your recommendation of this show and I was not disappointed! It really is an astonishing work of art. While knowing nothing of the novel, I agree with your interpretation that Pupu, Yan Liang and Chen Guan Sheng are dead in the final episode. From relatively early on I understood the story to be about Zhang Doing Sheng passing his misanthropic torch to Zhu Chou Yang. Their connection was far and away the creepiest. It was as if the lessons ZCY was learning from his teacher had nothing to do with math and everything to do with evil. Per usual, he excelled in the subject. On holding his breath, I agree he wanted to please his father, but I interpreted his avidity to excel at that skill as the drama’s way of showing that the only way he knew how to get what he wanted was by studying hard and getting the best score, but ultimately, all that practicing was useless because no matter how good he got at holding his breath, it wasn't a skill he needed to save his father or himself. He didn't know how to love his family or be a good friend and he blamed everyone else for those shortcomings. Really, not since The Bad Seed have I seen a more harrowing depiction of a child sociopathic child, and The Bad Kids was many, many times better than that very old film. This is a beautifully told horror story worthy of Stephen King at is best, in the league of Patricia Highsmith’s Talented Mr. Ripley, and discovering it gives me tremendous hope for The Long Night with Bai Yu since you said the original novel is by the same author as The Bad Kids. I really want to see him in something awesome and that might be it. Thank you for all the work you do keeping us up to date on Chinese Dramas and for digging deeper into the cultural subtex, all of which definitely would have been missed by me, to my great loss.

I always wondered why ZCY always wore a white t-shirt throughout the series and I think it was a representation of his "innocence". But what bugged me is when he was cleaning his shoes in the last episode. It was as if he wanted to erase and forget all that has happened and start over again.

I think the thing regarding ZCY skills in holding his breath was a detail that just proves that his character is really brutal because when Yan Liang, fell from the boat he actually didn’t save him or just thought about saving him? ZCY seems to be a good swimmer and his dear friend fell into the water but he didn’t do anything. Anyways I am still mind blown by this drama that I couldn’t sleep after I watched it, I am really glad that I have discovered it.

Any longer and you may flip mentally... but any shorter will kill the suspense. Thank you for recommending this. Starting watching c-drama lately and began to find most of them boring and formulaic. This series you either can't put it down or have to put it down to take a breath. Wow.

OMG the detail about Huán Zhū Gége was something I didn't even realize, can't believe you caught that! Also, if that drama was airing then we can assume that the show was set in the late 90s early 2000s (also bc of the cell phones)?? I also think that Yan Liang died - he never wears white and for him to walk into the assembly and not having anyone notice is a bit ?? I want to believe the 2 kids are still alive though, too depressing to accept that they both perished esp bc I was rooting for the older police officer to take in Yan Liang as his guardian and live a happy life Also it's interesting how ChaoYang became a killer in the end, I am really curious what will happen to him growing up - not only did he push someone to death but he kept lying about everything, he witnessed his father die, zhang dongsheng die etc unless you get therapy for it, that's gonna traumatize a kid for life... wonder if he will end up becoming a tortured and angry soul just like what happened with zhang dongsheng and end up killing more people omg shuddering at the THOUGHT

He always wore white shirts though but the difference is that his skin was fairer and clean. Also, the shadow and no reaction from the students and teachers show how he was only a ghost and how ZCY ignored him coldly and how he left disappointed was also another hint because his personality isn't like thet, he always confronted people if he didn't like something

ZCY has a backup plan in the last ship confrontation scene which is the reason why he keeps practicing holding his breath for longer periods - that is, in the case where ZDS doesn't die, he can jump off the ship and safely hold his breath as he swims to safety. That's why he keeps practicing.

Thanks for making this video! I just finished this earlier and originally I thought it was a very bland and generic ending where all the good guys win, until I saw your video and all the details which suggested the kids deaths. My view on the ending turned around completely and now I think it's brilliant. I also want to add my theory that there is a subtle audio clue at the very end of the last episode which suggest Zhu chaoyang let his sister fall to her death. He says he was too late, and the scene shows him looking out at the window. But at the moment an audio of what sounds like a girl asking for help plays for a few seconds, followed later by a thud sound. It suggested that he made it to the window in time, and made no effort to save her and allowed her to fall to her death.
@lousoufl28964 жыл бұрын
exactly, this is so important to why ZCY made so many unreasonable decisions throughout the later half of the drama. He's so stubborn about settling all the troubles without police intervention because all he wants is to hide his own crime.

Actually ZCY who keep the copy of memory card was asking about the ending of ZDS ending, being prissoned or death by betraying.. it's more related to the Ending line of ZDS, and he died because of ZCY betrayel. Her story breaks my heart and I’m always emotional and hopeful whenever she appears, that it will all work out well for her in the end. But when I saw how it all ended, my heart broke the hardest for her and I cried thinking about how it could’ve been if she had survived and get to see her brother for all that she had been through for him. This drama has been so amazing but also so distressing to watch. Kudos to everyone that brought this to us viewers and you are right that this is a magical cast. Actually, all your analysis is spot on. I missed a few ones but I had my doubt about Yan Liang being alive that is why I'm here searching for hidden clues as well. After finishing, it boggles my mind how on earth this passed the censorship since the clues are obviously directed to Chaoyong is after all a bad kid like the drama suggested. I think the most obvious clue (which no one has talked about to my surprise) is Pupu's letter at the end. He told Chaoyong to tell the truth to finally make a new start and the secret is only between her and him and she even told him that she didnt even tell Yan Liang about the secret. BUT Yan Liang did know about the situation of how JingJing fell and commented that it is not their fault since she fell on her own -- which proves JingJing's fall on her own is after all a lie since the real secret is only between Chaoyong and her. Brilliant drama. I was ready to give it 8.5/10 but then the ending happened (9.5/10) and it amazed me on how until the end, Chaoyong chose the wrong road on not telling the truth which proves he is also a psychopath in the making just like Teacher Zhang. Plus, there is no way in hell that he is left unpunished and managed to live a normal life as a student after all the blackmail incident -- he will be sent to juve for that. And, money stole from blackmail CANNOT being used to treat patient (Xie's cancer) which proves that Pupu, Yan Liang and the Detective died that is why Chaoyong managed to live the normal life again without any punishment. And, the biggest clue of all is the intro in the beginning. The animation shows that Chaoyong is left alone at the end thus cemented that the other dies.

I've seen some people express confusion in how anyone could not interpt the other kids as dead in the last episode. To be completely honest...it never crossed my mind despite how odd the school assembly scene was and the fact that Pu Pu was never shown again. I think I wanted them both to still be alive so badly I clung to any evidence they were and turned a blind eye to all the evidence they weren't.
@hollywooddarling4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for recommending this drama! I started watching when I saw your first video about it. I totally agree with your interpretation! I just finished the drama and the whole last episode felt really off-kilter. Yan Liang looking clean, wearing white, walking in the light and no one noticing him was typical death flag. The music also changed drastically from the very minimal, atmospheric sound from the previous episodes to this very typical drama type of music with instruments and all that's trying to manipulate your emotions into feeling touched/happy, especially in the scene when Yan Liang talks to Lao Chen. And to me Pupu totally died after her asthma attack. It was too obvious, you can understand why Zhang Dongsheng also let her die. Them saying she was ok offscreen and never actually showing her also makes it really obvious she is actually dead. I don't think you can watch the last episode and actually believe Pupu and Yan Liang are alive? I did really like the very last scene, which is Zhu Chaoyang coming clean with the police and telling them what happened with Zhu Jingjing's death, when he could have kept that secret since that wasn't totally his fault. The abrupt cut there really makes you think--- what is better, the truth or the lie? What would you have believe? Even if we as an audience believe he is not at fault regarding Zhu Jingjing's death, he did play a role in it, and all of the bad things that happened, he had a hand in it. Can he really continue living like this? That last scene with its abrupt cut, feels a bit like a release for him, at the very least, but at the same time, it being so abrupt makes you wonder if he will do the right thing going forward. I actually like the line 你可以相信童话 despite knowing the original line spoken. I think at least to me, it feels like the show is trying to hint to the audience that something is off about this ending, that this is the 童话 version of the ending. It makes me think of the ending of the 2019 version of Little Women, where people were confused over the "two endings", the one in the novel, where Jo March writes herself running to the train station to propose marriage with very loud, crazy music (an abrupt change from the usual score) and everyone behaving very exaggeratedly, and then she is seen happily married with all her family living close by with children, or the one in "reality" where she publishes her novel about her and her sister's childhoods, but is alone, with the family separated through marriage and distance...

I had almost settled for his father being forgetful (he also forgot the restaurant chaoyang said he took him to as a kid) and dismissed the noise as if he himself opened the bag and forgot. Now that I know this new perspective, I feel that maybe Chaoyang lied of being brought to that restaurant back then (exploiting what he believes the fact, that his father is forgetful) because his father was really dumbfounded and couldn't remember if he did.

I’m not seeing many people mention it in the comments and this is something I learned from reading others’ ideas. But Chaoyang didn’t just kill Jingjing, while it wasn’t as direct, he intended to kill both Yan Liang and Pupu. He definitely killed Yan Liang though. While I needed others interpretations to make it make full sense to me, but there is something very wrong about his interactions with Yan Liang in 10-12. Especially in 10 when he talks about the memory card in McDonald’s. When Dongsheng is right outside it’s very off to me because the kids are always incredibly careful , they wouldn’t let that happen, but Chaoyang was trying to get Yan Liang killed because he wanted to report everything to the police which could reveal Chaoyang’s involvement. As a result Dongsheng took Yan Liang to the bank, which Chaoyang absolutely did not object to despite how it might’ve been dangerous. Although that attempt to get Chaoyang killed failed, because instead Dongsheng just kicked Yan Liang out. Later, however, why did Dongsheng stab Yan Liang to death. Why did they meet in the first place? Chaoyang was leading Dongsheng to himself, or allegedly, in reality he led him to Yan Liang to die. Chaoyang did not once intervene look back or do anything at all, he most certainly wanted his former friend dead.
@nikuhsay1323 Жыл бұрын
Also related to that, again I only noticed this as being weird, but when I saw others’ on the internet I realized this was something far darker, but in episode 6 when Yongping comes to pick up Chaoyang, Chaoyang gives the most confusing yet heinous glare to Pupu and Yan Liang. When I first watched this I was so confused shaking it down to his mannerisms (which it is, but because he’s twisted), but he gave them that horrid look right after Dongsheng gave the fairy tale lesson and told him that trusting others can be a mistake when discussing his friends. It certainly wasn’t the beginning of his evilness, but it was certainly a bomb drop in his thinking. So I think it is very clear he had intent to kill Pupu and Yan Liang.

There is no way they are alive. The characters never said that they were alive for example the police said in ep 12 that they found Pupu (and the thing that the teacher didn't say his address after being asked for many times) but they didn't say that she was dead or alive, also with YL the shadow, no reactions and him being clean and fair were hinting that he was already dead.

I just finished watching this series. I thought Yan L. survived. So Yan Chaoyang isn’t as innocent as we thought. So the girl falling to her death could have been prevented?

Yes, he didn't save her but pushed her because her outfits were left in the scene. If she fell by herself, there will be no opportunity for her to leave clothes there. It was later revealed around episodes 8/9 the piece of clothes and in ep 12

But what is the message of this series? Just everyone dies and that's it?

Half way through and I still can't get into this drama; the story & plot premise are too illogical.

This show looks tacky, as if everything is suppose to have hidden, deeper meaning. Idk maybe I just don't like dramas.

Why were you even here in the first place since this channel is based on drama reviews?
