Fort Zachary Taylor Park in Key West is often overlooked in favor of other attractions such as Old Town, Mallory Square, and water sports. However, I believe it to be Key West's hidden gem on the southwest corner of the island. It features a historic fort, beach, hiking trails, birding opportunities, snorkeling, and picnicking.

Fort Zachary Taylor is indeed a historical gem, and I would say this is a must visit! 🤩 It's fascinating to see the fort in a good condition and to be able to immerse oneself in the surroundings. It can also be daunting when one envisions all the past activities that happened there. I enjoyed the segments where AK climbed up the stairs to explore and see the different views from the top of the fort. The isolated, tranquil beach was a bonus! 🏖😍 Thank you so much for sharing , AK! 🤗

@@ActionKid @ActionKid I lived in Key West for 18 years. I've watched all of your videos from Key West, and must say that you've made the same mistakes that every tourist makes. You've spent too much time on Duval, went on the tackiest boat (fury), walked excessively in the mundane areas, etc. When I lived in Key West for 18 years, my work involved locals and tourists in Key West Historic Seaport. Most tourists said "I spent the whole week on Duval and today I finally found the Historic Seaport!!!! ...And the Seaport is by far the best part of Key West!!!" And the locals all know this!!! So my advice to you would be to spend a day or two getting to know the local aspect of the Historic Seaport, avoid the tacky corporate charter boats, chat with some charter boat people around Schooner Wharf like Mike and Justin on "The Helm", and Ricky on "Spirit of Independence", chat with Jeff at the Sebago booth, chat with locals at Schooner Wharf (afternoon/evening in "locals corner"), etc. Be patient with the locals and get an understanding of what makes the Historic Seaport so special and unique. Then, you begin to understand the most interesting part of Key West. And then, (if you're patient and charming), you will have youtube content that will be unique and valuable to your viewers.

I cannot fathom how many handmade bricks were made back in the day for the fort. And it was three stories back then. What a fantastic fort.

You should check out the next fort in the Florida keys line of defense, it's twice as big as Fort Taylor in Key West. Its name is Fort Jefferson and it's in the Dry Tortugas, Florida. The Dry Tortugas is 70 mi west of Key West, it's the last group of islands in the Florida keys. It's shaped more or less like an octagon with a moat completely encircling the fort as it sits in the middle of the ocean. All three tiers of the fort are still standing it even has the largest of the cannons still there, apparently they were just too gigantic to haul away as scrap.
