The Coromandel Peninsula is about 2 hours east of Auckland and it's a popular holiday destination for many Kiwis. Tairua is on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula while Whangamata is on the southeast coast. In this vlog, we spend our day checking them both out.
First stop after reaching Tairua was to get some food. Being a coastal town, we had to try their fish & chips and whitebait fritter. We took our takeaways just down the road to enjoy them in a park next to the water. Peter returned later the same day to get their raw fish too.
Surf'n'Sand Takeaways
Address: Shop 7/236 Main Road North, Tairua 3508
Hours: Mon-Thu 11am-9pm, Fri 11am-9:30pm. Sat 12-9:30pm, Sun 12-9pm
Across the road from Surf & Sand Takeaways Peter spotted an intriguing looking shop called Heaven & Earth. It was filled with a vast array of gemstones, crystals, rocks, jewellery and even fossils! Amazingly they also have New Zealand's largest collection of moldavite. They had Items we never thought we'd see in a small town shop in NZ. Such a cool store with really friendly staff. Definitely a gem of the Coromandel.
Heaven & Earth
Address: 227 Main Road North, Tairua 3508
Hours: Sun-Thu 9:30am-5pm, Fri & Sat 9:30am-5:30pm
When in Tairua, we definitely recommend doing the walk up to Mt Paku's summit. Mount Paku is a volcanic peak and it's a relatively short walk with highly rewarding panoramic views at the top of the ocean, neighbouring islands and Tairua. We parked at Memorial Reserve and followed the signposts to reach the top.
Our accommodation was in Whangamata. We didn't realise when we went that it was during the Whangamata Beach Hop festival which is NZ's biggest celebration of the 50's and 60's. It's an annual 5 day festival that celebrates the culture, music, fashion, and automobiles of that era. We stayed at Kevan and Yvonne's B&B so we had a lovely, clean and comfortable private room in their home for the night.

That little hike up was definitely pretty steep, and love Peters climbing jandals LOLOL, and the view was so worth the hike! 8:51 was postcard worthy!! You guys will have to look into property/houses out there. Peter was not leaving without that fish dish with the coconut milk!! Your AirBnB is gorgeous, and love the open space. It reminds us of many of the styles of AirBnB in Mammoth, with the 2 levels and open areas. We'd be in that tub for sure! The bike adventure was nice, and it lets you get a nice ground feel of the area. It's nice you got to see some of the cars for the car show that were there. Fun video and what a beautiful day!! Love you guys to the moon and have a great week! 😘🌛💖

In Belgium, double frying chips is the norm for take-out. We are absolute fry addicts here in Belgium and you'll find loads of "frietkots" (chips take-out) in even the smallest of towns. The classic cars are all American brands so I guess it would have been an American classic car meetup. Thanks again for the content, guys!

Wow sounds like you guys take your chips really seriously there! 🤩 Hopefully we'll get to try it some day 🤞🙂 Yea lots of classic American cars mostly (that we saw at least!) Dang! Raw fish with coconut milk two vids in a row...now I’m extra curious 🥥 🐟 🧐... Will definitely have to try. Yen looked like she had a fish and chips pillow🤣🤣. My wife would love that stone/gem store.. We used to go to the flea market every weekend so my wife could buy a stone a week to add to her collection... she loves geodes too... made me happy to see that part😊😊 Brought back good memories. Stay safe guys and happy road tripping!

Hahaha Peter and I were talking about it the other day that it feels like we've been eating a lot of raw fish, fish n chips and Vietnamese food lately coz that's what we vlog 🤣🤣🐟🍜 seems like our road trip diet lol 😆 but yes definitely something you should try if you come here or go to the islands 😁👍 Oh my goodness I really struggled with opening that fish and chip packet.. had to cut down the long as footage of me battling with it 🤣😅 That's too cute about your wifey 💕🙂 Thanks Hans! Take care 👋 We're looking forward to your next video!

I use to spend a lot of time in Tairua, we actually found a stray cat and took him home and named him TT meaning, Tairua Tom. you go to Hot Water Beach. Dig a trench in the sand and sit in the natural spring.

It's always the food that doesn't look the best but has the best flavours! lol Yen opening the chips haha. What the heck?! I was not expecting that rock to be that expensive!! Will definitely not be buying any amethyst this year haha! Love the mountain climbing shoes! haha. $10 for breakfast is pretty good! Love Whangamata! Nice that you got the bikes too.

Oh yeah definitely not a good idea to go out there when it’s big swells. My sister and I went out there on a normal day and it was slightly difficult for us 😅. Yeah it’s going great! They treat us very well here. KZbin editing is keeping me occupied for now 😂Hope you guys have been doing well too!

Wow really? Such a kiwi classic! Have you had whitebait fritters/omelet before (like without the bread?) I guess we don't really see it on many menus anymore so whenever we do Peter tends to go for it 🙂👍

@@PeterandYen I've had plenty of whitebait fritters in my day, my mum originated on the West Coast of the South Island where it is its own food group. I've never had it with bread or toast and never heard of it being eaten that way. Even decent recipes for mock whitebait fritters are nice...

Ooo I've heard whitebait fritters are particularly yum in the South Island! I wonder if it's a regional thing to eat it with bread.. no idea haha we'll keep a look out next time we see it on takeaway menus! 😊
